Curse Continues – Atsur Hurt (Updated)

Rumors are circulating that NC State’s only experienced guard on the 2006-2007 roster, Engin Atsur, has experienced a foot injury and will not play in tonight’s Red/White game (not that many people can see the game).

Some fans on certain message boards have speculated that Atsur could be out for the entire month of November, but (at this point) we hear that the injury is not that significant and Atsur should be available to practice with the team some prior to the season opener on November 17th. SFN will keep you updated with anything that we learn.

If Atsur were to be hurt for the start of the season, NC State could enter the season with only five true healthy scholarship players comprised of one junior, two sophomores and two freshmen because Trevor Ferguson is ineligible until the end of the first semester and Farnold Degand still waiting a final answer from the NCAA.

If Atsur were to miss time during the season, then we would expect Gavin Grant to move to the back court with Courtney Fells. Since the post positions will be manned by Brandon Costner and Ben McCauley, then the hole ultimately existing at the swing forward position may be filled by true freshman, Dennis Horner. Looks like the young man went from #12 on the projected ‘depth chart’ to #5 in just seven short months.

Interestingly, the two freshmen that spurned their written commitments to NC State University – Dan Werner and Larry Davis – would have easily had the opportunity to potentially start in the ACC as true freshmen this year. Wow. I guess such a challenge and opportunity wasn’t in their DNA.

Say it ain’t so. I hope this is just a rumor and doesn’t pan out to be true. My fingers are crossed.

    The Curse of the Valvano.

Is there another injury I don’t know about, or are you just dismissing Lewandowski as walk-on quality?

BTW, gravis confirms it’s true, although no word on expected length for recovery.

  4. wufpack 10/25/2006 at 4:14 PM #

    BTW, it’s Ben McCauley.

SFN: LOL!! Sorry for that!! Was cutting and pasting pieces of the entry and had Dan Werner on the mind. Thanks for the heads-up.

^ Dismissing him as walk-on quality for now. Sorry.

Entry has been updated at 4:20pm.

I haven’t kept up with this as closely as I should have, but does this hurt anyone’s redshirt eligibility? Was anyone planning on being redshirted that will now have to play?

I’ve always thought that perhaps the biggest short-term loss was Werner. We could have used his height, skills and the body this year.

Regarding Atsur, hopefully, it’s not that serious. He’s a tough kid who has playing w/ injuries ever since his sophomore year so this must really be painful.

Just ran into someone on the staff, ironically…

Engin does have a spur on his foot. At this point, they are going to hold him out until the first game and see how he is. With this type of condition, there really is no way to tell. It could be a non-issue or it could be an ongoing problem. Only time will tell…

All the more reason to sign a monster class of 2007 guys as we won’t field a great product to display to 2008 recruits this year—as you can’t press and run successfully with just 5 scholarship players and no pg…But you can keep 10-12 guys happy next year by just running faster and faster (as Roy Williams will sadly show us this year)…

There is no way to spin State’s curse and ongoing misery positively—except that Lowe should be able to show DRAMATIC improvement next year if all of the guys who are leaning hard our way commit as hoped…

SG – Bummer – you gotta feel for Atsur. Not a good start for his senior year.

Also, I’ll be suprised if there’s any way you can keep 12 b’ball players happy. Of course, if anyone can do it, Roy can.

“I’ll be suprised if there’s any way you can keep 12 b’ball players happy.”

True…But with our luck, you probably need a few extra guys to overcome the CERTAIN injuries to key players that occur seemingly EVERY stinking year…

Maybe with an uptempo style and an expanding rotation (rather than the patented Sendek Season Long Shrinking Rotation) the guys that would normally be sulking on the bench ready to transfer get to play and are happy…

Was anything ever resolved with Grant’s immigration status or is that still a concern as well?

  12. packpigskinfan23 10/25/2006 at 6:09 PM #

^no worries for at least another year on Grant…

ShootingGuard, Are we still looking at 4 or 5 LOI for the early signing period? I know we have commitments from Thomas and Hickson, are the heavy leans you are referring to Smith, Warren and a surprise? I know several folks over on PackPride seem to think Sid might have a surprise recruit…PG that is. Any thoughts on this? We need to get bodies in here and quality bodies the way the ACC is shaping up now a days…

    Thanks…

Let’s all pray for Engin to only have a small issue that doesn’t last…

This is a darned shame. You just gotta love Engin’s grit and determination since he arrived in Raleigh. Hope he gets better soon. Both for him and us.

As for the season. It is just going to be a long slog. We will probably surprise a few teams, but overall it will be tough. This will be a good test for Wolfpack nation – can we can be patient? I hope so.

“Atsur should be available to practice with the team some prior to the season opener on November 17th.”

Don’t we open the season on November 10th?

  16. nourider 10/25/2006 at 10:24 PM #

Went to the game tonight. Atsur didn’t dress out, had his foot in a soft cast.

Sid had the team in a Red = First string, White= Second string. Grant and Fells could have scored every time they touchesd the ball. Ferguson is a gunner, every time he touched the rock he went to the hole.

Costner and McCauley looked good but not dominant. Some other guys look like they could be good role players, and god knows we’ll need them.

All in all it was fun. Format was different, as women played 20 mins, then men 20 mens, rinse and repeat. Most people left after the first set.

WE WILL NEED TO OUTRUN AND OUTGUN EVERYONE (‘CEPT UVa—WE OWN THEM) WE PLAY THIS YEAR, AND CANNOT AFFORD THE COLD SHOOTING WE SAW OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS.

  18. bTHEredterror 10/25/2006 at 10:58 PM #

“……Farnold Degand still waiting a final answer from the NCAA.”

I must have missed something, awaiting word about what? Is he going to lose another year of eligibility?

Hopefully Engin will be alright, I just knew with us being short on players somebody would get hurt. Murphy’s Law demads it would be the only point guard we have.

  19. wufpack 10/25/2006 at 11:04 PM #

Waiting to hear whether or not he can play this year. It’s a super longshot, but we have an appeal in.

I no longer question the media’s last place prediction.

I’m reminded of the ol’ Lefty at Maryland. He loved to play uptempo and almost never went beyond 7 to 8 players deep, so I know it has been done plenty of times in the past. And Lefty did not have many 6’11” and above guys in his program either. As Lefty used to say, “get me the rebounds and we will win.” He knew the key to a running game and winning was getting the rebound and he emphasized that with all of his teams.

Lefty’s favorite, and best rebounder of alltime, was Buck Williams and he was only 6’7”. Now I know we don’t have any Buck Williams’ on this team but smaller teams can rebound effectively, many of ol’ Lefty’s teams did and that gives me some ray of hope. We have several good athletes that I believe can play uptempo and rebound. It will be interesting to see how much Sidney can get out of these guys this season.

I think they had names on the back of the jerseys. It was hard to tell. There were small letters on the back of every jersey, and they were different for each player. 🙂

I read somewhere that Engin has a sore Achilles tendon…that is far different from a heel spur.

A heel spur is built up over time as it is an accumulation of calcium, etc. so he must have had that for several years which might explain why he didn’t have blazing speed. My wife had a heel spur cut from her foot and it is no small thing to recover from.

Does any one have the real scoop?

N&O has also reported that Engin has a sore Achilles tendon:

Really no details listed on Trevor Ferguson’s (((15))) points, but it sounds as if he may be able to contribute when available, as hoped.
