Halftime Blog: USM 13 NC State 10 (Updated)

* Southern Miss completely controlled the first quarter of play in a game that looks a lot like what you have seen from the last 7 or 8 Wolfpack games.

* Heading into the last 3 minutes of the first half, State had run 18 total offensive plays from scrimmage; USM had run 36 plays. USM has also doubled the Wolfpack’s first downs by a count of 12 to 6.

* State had only 105 total yards in the first half – 46 of them on one play when Marcus Stone hit Donald Bowens for a touchdown.

* The Wolfpack’s offense finally started to move the ball in the 2nd quarter, primarily through the air as opposed to running the ball. Toney Baker has the Pack’s longest run from scrimmage with 9 yards.

* Marcus Stone is only 6 of 15 for 77 yards in the first half. He has had 2 or 3 balls inexcusably dropped by his receivers and has just missed badly on some other passes.

* USM’s offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and gave their quarterback tons of time.

* The Southern Miss radio color commentator needs to be eradicated from the face of the earth for stupidity and bias. This guy is HORRIBLE. Hell, horrible is a complement. Very unprofessional.

* No turnovers in the first half for either team. Ultimately, the team that makes the first major mistake in this one may be the one who loses.

Go pack! Grind one out for us!

I haven’t heard the USM radio announcer but have heard a lot of crap about him. Whats the deal?

  3. StateFans 09/16/2006 at 8:54 PM #

He just makes up things to be unhappy about. The refs are trying to job them. Can’t you tell from the 20 to 10 score?

  4. NCSUDude17 09/16/2006 at 9:00 PM #

    You mean 23-10? *sigh*

  5. Micky McCarthy 09/16/2006 at 9:09 PM #

The question now turns to, “would Amato step down for the good of the school?”

  6. BJD95 09/16/2006 at 9:16 PM #

Tank gets unsportsmanlike AND and ejection for bitching. You can’t tell me that isn’t the head man’s persona seeping through.

    my oh my

whew hew 30-10 oh my indeed, go watch the FSU-Clemson game, all 9 of FSU’s points off of blocked Clemson fg kicks! Bowden Jr. says after the half they won’t kick anymore.!

So it can get worse…. and worse…. and worse. The last week was nothing to what we’re about to witness. The only thing we can hope for now is that this is rock bottom. It’s definitely a low for my lifetime of wolfpack football. And I’m old enough to have forgotten the name of every single one of my college professors.

Maybe we should just punt on first down and see if CTC is right. Can defense and the kicking game really win the game? Not unless the defense get’s a hell of a lot better.

USM has their scrubs in. But at least Daniel Evans broke his cherry. I hope people aren’t overly focused on QB play – what’s wrong goes MUCH deeper than that.

  12. GAWolf 09/16/2006 at 9:52 PM #

Congrats to Evans. I wish his dad would not be so modest. The boy deserves some credit.

What we have here is a complete mismanagement of the program. It’s going to be very ugly until a change is made. Chuck has many positive traits, unfortunately, serving as a head choach is not one of them.

  14. GAWolf 09/16/2006 at 9:57 PM #

I agree. It’s not that we’re losing to USM or even that we’re getting blown out. To me it’s how it’s happened.

  15. colapack 09/16/2006 at 9:57 PM #

Yikes, 2 int’s! One from their 6 yd line. Glad

  16. BJD95 09/16/2006 at 9:59 PM #

Now Evans gets a pick, too. No worries about misleadingly close score in the newspaper.

This is all Chip Alexander’s fault, you know.

37 to 17. All we need is Dandy Don Meredith singing “turn out the lights”

I hope everyone is going to whine about firing Amato after every game.

Folks – this is a down year for us. And for UNC and FSU and Miami and Maryland. We have a lot of injuries. We have lots of young talent — still learning. Key positions are in trouble.

I recall a post I made 3-4 months back saying after looking at the schedule I couldn’t see but 2-3 sure wins. We will get some surprise wins but just bow your neck and hang in there. THis is a bump in the road.

  18. Woof Wolf 09/16/2006 at 10:07 PM #

Looks like a sink hole to me.

  19. BJD95 09/16/2006 at 10:09 PM #

A down year coming off 2 seasons of 6-10 ACC play is a big freaking problem.

  20. Wulfpack 09/16/2006 at 10:10 PM #

Bump in the road??? Uhh…Southern Miss just spanked us by 20. I think your sort of downplaying this a little. We’re not even competitive.

Wow Stone really lit it up tonight didn’t he? Guess we didn’t want to show BC too much.

  21. BoKnowsNCS71 09/16/2006 at 10:11 PM #

Losing all the Jrs on our DL to the NFL cannot be predicted. IF they were here this year, we would not be re-building.

  22. NCSURulez 09/16/2006 at 10:16 PM #

Losing all those players on defense to the NFL has nothing at all to do with the ineptitude of the offense. That has to do with Trestman, Stone, and the O-Line for which we seemingly never recruit.
