Rampant Stupidity

William and Mary’s athletics logo remains unacceptable to the NCAA, whose Executive Committee yesterday denied the college’s appeal to keep two feathers that protrude from the interlocking W and M.

The NCAA maintains that the nickname “Tribe” when paired with the feathered logo violates association restrictions regarding the use of Native American mascots, names and imagery at NCAA championships. W&M can keep “Tribe,” the NCAA determined earlier this year, but must eliminate the feathers in its logo if it wants to serve as a host for NCAA championship events, such as Division I-AA football playoff games. Also, W&M teams cannot display the feathered logo at any NCAA postseason competitions.

Article from Richmond Times Dispatch

I guess the NCAA went down the list of schools until it found one small enough that they think that they can bully around. I have to wonder if they shouldn’t have moved on down the list and found one that didn’t also have a law school.

Heaven help us if PETA combines forces with the NCAA.

Common sense ain’t common.

I am amazed that no one has yet filed a lawsuit over this. Hopefully William and Mary will take up the challenge.

Does anyone have an explanation for why the Florida State Seminoles with a Indian silhoutte in their logo is evidently OK…..but the William & Mary Tribe with two feathers (two feathers!!!!!) is not?

^ Because FSU had the balls to threaten litigation, for one.

^Also because FSU has the support of the Seminole (Native American) Nation to use their name and symbols!

Now if we can just find the bird that those feathers came from then William and Mary might can get its consent…………

I am amazed and shaking my head in total awe of the illogic that continues to come from the NCAA. The NCAA has 100 years old and totally senile.

Has North Dakota filed it’s suit yet?

Hey, this won’t work in every case, but W & M should consult the Seminoles, too. Since it is ok to be the “Tribe” in a generic sense, that means it applies to all possible combinations. Therefore with Seminole backing (I think the FSU logo has two feathers, too) the “Tribe” could then re-insert the feathers! Of course the NCAA would never back down from W & M since they don’t generate the millions in apparel sales of the ‘Noles.

I’m amazed at this token gesture towards Native Americans. To me this seems more condescending than effective in fostering respect. Why not redirect some merchandise sales to the “Affected” “Tribes”?

What about the colors issue, that could get really sticky in the future?

That’s odd. I didn’t hear that we (Catawba College) had to remove our feathers from one of OUR logos….

Perhaps I just didn’t hear the full story. It couldn’t be that the NCAA is…(gasp)…inconsistent.

Red man…black man…white man, we could be in some real trouble.

Damn it, Duke and Carolina may have slipped by and gotten off scot free again.

    Nope, blue bird, blue marlin….

I know they’re a pro team but if the Washington Redskins don’t have to change their nickname, no one should have to.

Indians,Seminoles, Tribe, Warriors, Braves, Illini, Chiefs are not racial slurs. Redskins is.

    old13, absolutely correct.

The NCAA is a joke when it comes to leveling judgements on schools or players. Nothing they do is fair. They reduce the number of basketbll coaches on salary which means one less person to watch over the student athletes and then make the players play on sunday nights which means probably the only real day they had to do homework without thinking about basketball. They don’t care about the players or the schools.
