Koren’s Problems Aren’t Alone

Very sad. (Link)

Minnesota Vikings receiver Koren Robinson was in jail Wednesday on suspicion of drunken driving, a newspaper reported.

Sgt. Loren Jansen of the St. Peter Police Department told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that Robinson was arrested around 10:46 p.m. Tuesday for “driving while impaired.”

At least Koren isn’t alone on the police blotter this week. In Charlotte, former Tarheel football player, Kevin Donnalley resigned as football coach at Charlotte Christian after taking what he called “inappropriate disciplinary action against a player. (Link)

You really have to give the old Daily Tarheel Charlotte Observer credit for not going down without a fight. There is no way that they are going to let a Tarheel be smeared without (a) bringing up the transgressions of others and (b) trying to compare said Tarheel to as ‘awesomest’ of a coach as possible.

Donnalley isn’t the first coach to lose his job for physically abusing a player.

In 1978, former Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes was fired after he hit a Clemson player during a game. Kentucky State fired men’s basketball coach Winston Bennett in 2003 for hitting player Ricky Green. Green filed a criminal complaint against Bennett, who was ordered to complete 200 hours of community service and get anger management counseling.

Texas Tech basketball coach Bob Knight choked a player in 1997 when he was at Indiana, an incident that contributed to his being fired.

Let’s play the SAT game of “what doesn’t fit”? Hmmmm….Woody Hayes…Bob Knight…Kevin Donnalley? Hmmmm…..

At least the paper made reference to Donnalley’s recent legal problems related to steriods. Near the very end of the article they drop in a quick:

In July, Donnalley was one of seven former Panthers named by prosecutors in a case against Dr. James Shortt as having received illegal performance-enhancing drugs from the Columbia-based doctor. Shortt was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison in the case.

Could you imagine the focus and resulting innuendo that would have occured if anyone other than a Tarheel who had been a major principal in a national steriod scandal had behaved in such an inappropriate rage?

You have to feel for KRob. It looks like this dreadful disease is going to have an even worse impact on his career than it did to DT’s. Too bad, b/c KRob had every physical skill needed to be an all-time great in the NFL.

Alcoholism is a tough disease to overcome. I wish him the best of luck.

“Former National Basketball Association player Lonny Baxter was arrested by Secret Service agents earlier today after reports of shots fired about two blocks from the White House.”

Is this stupid or what? I wonder if Lonny dropped his shoulder and charged when the agents handcuffed him.

I wish KRob all the best. I really thought this was going to be a major breakout year for him…. a year that would have him seen as one of the best receivers in the NFL.

I wish KR the best of luck with his ongoing desire to screw up. He can overcome this obstacle if he sets his mind to it. The question is does he want an NFL career or to do hard time which seem to be the two most likely options for non-degreed young athletes with a strong attraction to controlled substances.

If he wants to be like Mike (Irving that is), he needs to get some contracts behind him first so he has something to fall back on.

If I were in the position to offer contracts to professional athletes, I don’t think I’d be giving the contracts to boozehounds.

Just another unprepared kid gone bad. Money doesn’t mean a thing if you can’t conduct yourself appropriately in society. Here’s to hoping K-Rob can get the best of help — but sometimes you got to want to help yourself before you’re able to internalize anything that anyone else has to offer.

Godspeed Koren. It has been one adverse situation after another since his spikes hit NFL paydirt. I’ve got faith that he is young enough, an we all know he is talented enough, to turn it around in time. The most important thing is for him is to throw this monkey from his back, be with friends and family who care and respect him, and have faith in the almighty.

“but sometimes you got to want to help yourself”

I think this is always the case. Once anyone makes up their mind they want to do something it is usually pretty easy to do it. The problem is setting you mind to it.

I don’t buy into the victim stuff, especially some 25 your old party guy being in the grasp of some uncontrollable vicious diesease. I’m sure there are many people that don’t have the ability to control themselves but to put KR in this group is a little premature.

The kid probably drinks like many guys his age but he is on a national stage so he gets popped for a DUI and he suddenly has some uncontrollable problem. I’m sure over 1,000 other people got a DUI that night too. The MADD women changed society and hopefully he will learn that drinking and driving isn’t cool anymore- The one-for-the-road thing was so pre-80’s, when driving home didn’t cost you 10K and maybe your job.

Another reason he should of stayed in school and got the party years out of him.

The Daily Roundup: DUI for Koren

“StateFansNation brings bad news about the continuing struggles of former wideout and recovering alcoholic Koren Robinson. A good kid with a vicious, vicious disease. We wish you well, Koren. Oh, and as is the case……”
