StateFansNation is proud to present the second in a special series focused on NC State offensive lines in the Chuck Amato era. One of our readers, “Mickey McCarthy” (gotta love that), has done some excellent work that we are going to share over the next few days. Thanks so much, Mickey!

Reggie Poole failed to stay eligible, but oft-injured Keegan Weir filled-in at right guard and undersized Derek Green slid over to his natural center position. True freshman Jed Paulsen wrestled the job away midseason, however, and was a key player in the remarkable road win at FSU.

Once again, this unit stayed relatively healthy and continued to protect sophomore quarterback Philip Rivers, and for the second year in a row, gave up the fewest sacks in the league.

The two anchors (Colmer and Kooistra) began to emerge as weapons, but the running game had difficulty running between the tackles. Nonetheless, another seven win season and bowl appearance kept the program moving forward.

Marty Galbraith continued to work the position effectively, while taking over offensive coordinator duties following the departure of Norm Chow.

The experience of 2001 line seems to be equivlent with the experience of this years line. This 2001 line was not a bad line, and if I remember correctly we scored a lot of points and could move down the field somewhat at will, we just were lacking on the defensive side of the ball to some degree and the loses were very close ballgames.

Anyway, I continue to see more potential coming to light on the offensive side of the ball this year. The 2001 line were better pass blockers than run blockers. This year’s line has some very good experience blocking for the run and we have running backs that can get through a hole quickly. If giving the choice of running to win or passing to win, I’ll more than be happy running to win. Running will eat more clock time and keep the less experienced defense off of the field – something that would have been very beneficial in 2001.

Didn’t Derek Green end up recovering a Ray Robinson fumble in the endzone for a touchdown against FSU that year??
