New Big Men Arise; McClain Note

In this entry from a couple of weeks ago, we set the table for some recruiting conversations here on SFN. We discussed how, in addition to point guard (see Chris Wright & Jamelle McMillan), that post players are a very important piece of NC State’s 2007 recruiting initiatives.

In the piece, we highlighted JJ Hickson and Julian Vaughn as two dream post players for the Wolfpack based primarily on their pre-camp rankings. Both Hickson and Vaughn and have recently released their current list of schools and NC State did not make the public list for either. Despite that, some folks close to the Wolfpack program have suggested that we not totally write-off either of these Wolfpack prospects.

In addition to Hickson and Vaughn, a few other names of potential post players rose to the surface during the past week’s camp evaluations. Evidently Tracy Smith and Jerai Grant both impressed with their performances. In fact, Smith, who lists NC State, Oklahoma State, and Memphis as his leaders – seemed to really impress those that saw him play. (He was even mentioned on Rivals Radio on Sirius Satellite Radio).

Another name that has garnered a lot of attention recently is that of Anthony McClain. McClain is from Sidney Lowe and Pete Strickland’s backyard of Washington, DC and at seven feet tall he is burgeoning into a highly recruited prospect. Both Scout and Rivals currently list McClain as the #4 center in America; Rivals lists him as the #65 best overall prospect in the class of 2007 at the moment.

We found this nice piece at the Big East Basketball Blog today on McClain that you should enjoy. In addition to comments on McClain, the entry discusses UConn’s current conundrum with a roster full of freshman and sophomore big men that is going to have a residual impact on national recruiting this year.

Anthony McClain has turned himself into quite a high-major target in the last couple years and had Big East powers such as Georgetown, Connecticut, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, among others, angling for his services. Last week, McClain participated in the Reebok sponsored ABCD basketball camp in New Jersey. For this Trenton, NJ native, the ABCD Camp was a Homecoming for McClain (Metro Hoops). Currently, the 6’11 center is playing for National Christian Academy in Fort Washington, MD after stops at Trenton High as a freshmen and St. Patrick as a sophomore. He also runs with the powerful DC Assault AAU program on the circuit.

I thought this wasn’t going to be a recruiting site. 😉

Please, by all means, keep them coming. I enjoy it.

I hope I don’t come to hate the word “Georgetown” over the next 12 months. How many scholarships do they have to offer?

  4. Jeff 07/11/2006 at 5:02 PM #

    Do they have any?

I must say that I don’t follow recruiting but over the last year I have come to SFN for news about state athletiics in general… I like what I see, nice recap and commentary without getting into too much speculation and detail, which I enjoy!

Hey primacyone. Even though its been over 15 years, the NCAA tournament debacle with Georgetown will forever draw my disgust for them. We’d have a fresh, new reason to dislike them if they beat us in recruiting.

Oh, I have already told all my state buddies and family about SFN. Its my number 1 site I come to every single day. SFN, keep up the good work!!!

Nice thought Jeff. Geogetown indeed has zero scholarships available for the 2007 season as things stand right now. The best I can tell they expect to have at least one open up after the season.

Here’s a nice related quote and info regarding Chris Wright from Georgetown board moderator.

” . . .By most accounts, we are indeed his leader. But for the moment, our 13 ’07 schollies are all taken. That may be one of the reasons stopping him from committing. In general though, he’s said he wants to hold off after his NC St experience, so a verbal may take some time anyway.

Most people think Jeff Green will leave after this season, which should free up the scholly for Wright. A back-court of Wright and Freeman will be incredible!. . . “

^^^ not to mention they already have Doc Rivers son coming in as a PG… we have zero highly touted PGs

i prdict we land wright and mac…. at least all signs are pointing that way 🙂

Maybe mcmillan, but not chris. He is leaning closer and closer to georgetown from what ive heard and seen.

thank you SFN, love the bytes; being a ncsu bball fan can be a year-round hobby ; ]

i don’t like this leaning towards georgetown business for Wright, and it doesn’t seem to make sense if they don’t have a single scholarship to offer…

I do like this business of Mac having close ties to NC State. he would do well to come here.

…Oh and Jamelle: spamAssassin is your friend!

From what I understand, you aren’t supposed to recruit for scholarship slots that you don’t have. So unless Chris Wright is willing to wait until the end of the season when the Georgetown players decide if they are going to leave, Georgetown should probably stop recruiting him. Or maybe CW will be willing to walk-on or RS there? 🙂

Probably not though. The magic eight ball says that we have a good chance with Wright.

I would love to see Smith and Thomas, both NC guys be the first two ’07 signings. Then have McClain and Wright, wow! With the experience that Grant, Costner and Fells will receive this year in the school of hard knocks coupled with Lowe having a year of coaching in the ACC under his belt who knows where this could go. It is too early to get really jacked up, but I can see the wheels turning. If all the pieces (7′ who runs the floor, pf, tweeners that can spread the floor) start falling in line then a great pg like a Wright or McMillan will jump at the chance to be the guy playing for a coach like Lowe who knows the position as good as anyone. You can’t blame Wright for waiting to see what Lowe can offer around him. With Sendek it was the spread offense, with Lowe it will be (hopefully) other great play makers. Go Pack!

thought it was worth noting that Jerai Grant is a Dematha product.

You guys that think Wright is coming here are delusional.

I hope I’m wrong, but I have a feeling that Chris Wright will be the next Rick Barnes story for NC State.

  17. redfred2 07/12/2006 at 2:00 PM #

I haven’t totally given on Wright but it seems the earlier commitments where somehow tainted, and left to believe that NCSU wasn’t really anything if the former coach wasn’t around.

“From what I understand, you aren’t supposed to recruit for scholarship slots that you don’t have.”

See UNC football 2006! 28 LOI for 25 spots, hence guys having to prep school until after the season.

Too many “aren’t supposed to’s” have already occurred regarding this group of strangely uncommited commitments, and they’ve all been to NC State’s disadvantage. There certainly won’t be any retribution coming out of Raleigh for anything that happens with these kids now, so I wouldn’t count on any “aren’t to supposed to’s” stopping Georgetown from doing anything from here on out.
