Junkie Stuff

These links will be for ‘sports junkies’ only. You know who you are!

* This is a link that VaWolf will love. Anyone interested in a football poll statistical analysis will love it. This article that examines the most overrated college football teams in history (from CollegeFootballNews) is highly related to the topic. Pardon us for loving this:

6. North Carolina – Carolina has had 11 chances since 1971 to prove they belong in the national forum in football, but has never really soared past preseason poll expectations. Now, they were outstanding in the early 1980s under Dick Crum, going 37-9 to open the decade, but that surprised no one. What did catch observers off guard were the 1973 and 1978 teams, both of which began the season in the Top 20, but ended it below .500.

* Don’t know if you have been following the Stephen A. Smith vs Deadspin situation…but this link is interesting. Those damn bloggers with their facts and truth! No wonder Lee Fowler hates the internet.

* CollegeHoopsNet.com is counting down the Top #144 college basketball teams of next season. (Link) They are getting close to #100 and NC State isn’t listed. We’re not joking about this…if Andrew Brackman doesn’t play basketball this season, NC State probably shouldn’ t be in the Top 100.

* This kid is a fanatic!! No doubt about it. You HAVE to see that clip of one of the world’s biggest Penn State fans.

* Lastly, ACC Football fanatics will have interest in this blog entry from The Sporting News “Why has it takenTommy Bowden so long to deliver”.

This is a program that has all the bells and whistles. Top-notch facilities, rabid fans, fat wallets, strong tradition, fertile recruiting ground.

Oh, during Bowden’s seven-year stint, there have been moments — like that Peach Bowl win over Tennessee. Sweet.

But facts are fact — and here’s one that’ll make you bang your head against Howard’s Rock: Clemson hasn’t won the ACC since 1991. Let’s not even talk about recent losses to Duke and Wake.

Bowden is a good guy. I’ve had the honor of meeting him. We shared breakfast one morning in the Clemson football offices a few years ago. He’s an honorable family man. Deep down, I hope Bowden takes Clemson back to its rightful place among the college football elite. But his tenure can be assessed in one word.

Eh.

Just checked the link for the top 144 college hoops teams referenced above. I found State listed as number 53.

^ That was last year’s rankings. Not this year’s countdown.

(Plus, they used the diamond logo that has rarely associated with the basketball program and hasn’t even been a part of the university since for the last six years)

Michigan St. rarely gets recognized in preseqanson. It’s after they rip off a 4-0 start that they become overrated. Only 3 Pac10 teams, please. Every team could make this list. Leave BYU, and all three service branch teams off unless your talking most underrated (they have some recruitng bias’ to contend with) Every Bowden coached team makes it (including teams like Tulane who were formerly run by a Bowden) and throw in Amato’s squad for squandering a roster that Fisher Deberry would die for.
