Fascinating Idea (Update @ Noon – New Football League

In the same vein of mixing sports and business and The Big 12 Network comes a new football league that are going to be connected to, and play at college campuses.

We’ve heard rumblings about folks at NC State being a little fearful of having a little too much debt connected to renovations at Carter-Finley Stadium. Well, it doesn’t take too much time to make a dent into some debt service by leasing out the nice new stadium.

SMQ has a nice commentary on the new league that is accessible by clicking here. (We also noticed that one of our quotes were being used by SMQ to market the site. Thanks!)

You can click on the official website of the new league here. You can even vote for schools that you would like to see host a team…like NC State, whom the N&O is reporting has been contacted about the league.

How does the N&O know this? Well, Lee Fowler told them! Of course!

Athletics director Lee Fowler said Wednesday that NCSU has held discussions with officials of the fledgling All American Football League about the use of the Wolfpack stadium. Should the stadium be leased, Fowler said it could bring in a “ballpark figure” of $2 million to $3 million a year for the school.

“We have told them we’re willing to allow it,” Fowler said. “They will not use our practice facilities or any other facility, only the stadium for the six or seven games to be played each year. We’re looking at it strongly and told them we would be on board.”

It sounds as though UNC-Chapel Hill has not been contacted about the new league. This would make sense as parking in Chapel Hill will be a severe impediment to success for the league. Conceptually, NC State’s participation in this league could (indirectly) be used as a built-in recruiting advantage; how nice would it be to have an “inside track” to $100k a year after college to play football if the player isn’t NFL material?

Of course, all area players would be welcome on the team and support the team…but, NC State’s role (and therefore access to the league) would definitely be differentiated from other schools in the area.

Noon Update: Lots of folks on the internet talking about this topic…so, we will try to keep this entry updated. 850 The Buzz Blog recalled the echoes of the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks of the early 1990s.

Now that sounds cool. A chance to pull for some of the guys you hated when they played against you. A built-in fan base, and existing infrastructure. I expect if the colleges are going to support it, the graduated players could still get gym time on campus. It’s smart and I think it could work.

Provided the NFL is on board.

The idea is unique, but I’m skeptical about the “built-in fan base”. April – June sounds like summer vacation time to me… not outdoor football. And I say “outdoor” football, because I’m a big INDOOR football fan.

By the way, my home NIFL team, the Fayetteville Guard (14-1) is going to the Championship Game against the Billings Outlaws this Friday. Go GUARD!

this seems very intresting…. I wonder, who would be in charge of the upkeep of the field during the leagues season? would it be the NCSU faculty? how much would that cost the school?

SFN: State would incorporate maintenance expenses in the lease agreement to insure profits.

it does seem like it would help recruiting…. but on what level? would it attract the type of guy who is determined to give his all to make it to the NFL? or would it attract the type of guy who just wants to play the game… and may not have the determination to play with everything he’s got…

either way, dosnt look like a bad idea. i guess it all comes down to buisness now…..

Sounds like a fantastic idea – as I was driving by there last night I couldn’t help but think what a waste it is to have a structure like that and use it less than 10 times a year. I’m highly skeptical over whether such a league would actually stay afloat, but I would definitely go after the extra revenue.

I will admit…the first thing that came to mind was:

    “Batter up! Hear that call
The time has come for one and all
    To play ball.

We come from cities near and far
We’ve got Canadians, Irishman and Swedes,
We’re all for one, we’re one for all.
    We’re All-Americans.

Each girl stands, her head so proudly high,
    Her motto ‘Do or Die.
She’s not one to use or need an alibi.

Our chaperons are not too soft
    They’re not too tough,
Our managers are on the ball.
We’ve got a president who really knows his stuff,
We’re all for one, we’re one for all.
    We’re All-Americans.

Does the University have the debt??? Thiough it is the Wolpack Culb.
Has the University contibuted? If the University(Fowler) is talking getting 2-3M a year in this arrangement–what do they do with it?? Gieve to the WPC???

^ Semantics. The debt service on C-F and our overall facilities improvements have some prudent folks extra-cautious right now.

    Nothing to lose sleep over.

Get set for a contract extension with a raise and an extra $50k for “Second-Tier Professional Football With Lee Fowler.”

Yeah, Shyhawks. They really helped us didn’t they. In fact did they even win a game (I don’t think so)? They were even coached by Roman Gabriel! How many State players were on their team?
I think that the NFL has effectively controlled pro football in the US and any sort of competition would be have to be extremely well financed.
To get the money would be great but my friendly advice to LF is get the check in advance for the 1st season!
I think that the Continental Basketball team that was in Concord a couple years ago still owes Cabarrus County like $16K for the use of the Exposition center.
The last thing we need is some poorly financed team to fold and stick us with a bill!

Sorry but who spent over $100m in C_F improvements is IMHO a little
    more than Semantics.

SFN: Wow. You could not have set up more false of a premise to have chosen to argue with.

Point beinng why doesn’t the university spend more of their FB revenue
on footbaal C_F improvements. Who knows w may be some day
the “mystery water” in the east side restrooms can be fixed. Although
it always gives me a chuckle to see guys wearing sandals’ to the game.

The two collegiate sports that operate in the black, Football and Basketball, must support the entire athletics program. You know Womens’ Volleyball can be expensive. And somebody’s got to pay for Lee’s domicile and conveyance.

Expansion is traditionally dependent on boosters, corporate partners, and TV revenue.

Oh, and us poor sods in the nosebleeds.

Sorry but just don’t understand debt servicing issues.
The WPC spet what approximately $100M.

LTR-read we have sold 40,000 season tickets MOST with LTR

So say 30,000 seats with say LTR just say an average of $3,000 per seat
(note not counting wpc donation or ticket fee for CF improvements.) or ticket prices, vendors, parking etc.

    30,000x$3000= $90,000,000 Million per year.

Help me some body please explain what the debt issue is???? Even if u use a LTR fee of $1500 in 2 years eveything is paid with denaro to spare????

IS MY MATH WRONG??? WHAT IS THE DEBT ISSUE?

  13. johnny 07/28/2006 at 8:33 AM #

“SFN: Wow. You could not have set up more false of a premise to have chosen to argue with”

My bad. I guess I was wrong, it must have been taken from the Athletic Dept budget. In that case maybe the WPC need to step up to the plate.

    “30,000x$3000= $90,000,000 Million per year”

my bad too early in the am i guss
    LTR of $3000 to high
say $500(think likely hgher with sky boxes club seats, tickets between the 35 yard lines) and not counting WPC donations, etc so use $1000

30,000x$1000 still $30M a year 3-4 yeaar all paid if u only use LTR
