Hurricanes Win The Stanley Cup!

Cup Winners

We will leave this entry open for folks to talk about the Hurricanes’ win and link to interesting articles and blog entries. 850’s Buzz Blog has been the easiest place to follow the Canes in the Blogosphere.

NC State should do everything that can be done to find creative ways to link our Athletics Department to the glow of the Canes Championship. In the very least, the World Champions should be honored by the NC State community at one of the football games in September or October.

As Rick stated in our comments section:

This wouldn’t have happened without the initial creative energy and drive of NC State people. From Jim Valvano, Charlie Bryant, Steve Stroud, Perry Safran and many others to every NC State fan that contributed to the building of this magnificent arena; this achievement was made possible. The State of North Carolina, Wake County, the City of Raleigh and the Carolina Hurricanes are certainly full partners in the building but it was NC State people that made this happen.

For those that do not remember, the City of Raleigh was the toughest partner to bring on board and make no mistake about this – it was through the City of Raleigh that the enemies of NC State worked the hardest to make this not happen or to be built as an antiquated clone of the Smith Center.

We think that it is sometimes neat to memorialize screenshots from national websites. Since we so rarely link to CBS Sportsline because of Greg Dickhead we thought that we’d highlight their site tonight.

The Carolina Hurricanes have won more World Championships in one sport than Lee Fowler’s Athletics Department has won National Championships in six years of competing in almost 20 sports per season.(Sorry…just had to link it to NC State somehow)

Congrats Canes! One for the ages…another team in Red is next to win a championship in the RBC. Thanks for doing us proud Canes!

Its a shame that the victory parade will be a lap in the Parking lot at the sports complex. Why not Hillsborough Street? It was good enough for Santa. I’m very proud of our ‘Canes, but a lap in the parking lot just sounds…. well, Hayseed.

Here’s another way to link this to NC State – It wouldn’t have happened without the initial creative energy and drive of NC State people. Congratulations to the Canes!

    SFN — Love it!

I was happy for the players and the city. However, if it wasn’t that way before, it will certainly be so now…We play in the Canes arena.

I would think that Glenwood South would make a FANTASTIC parade route, with ample watering holes available for the masses.

I certainly liked seeing the occasional crowd shot that included the “Home of the NC State Wolfpack” building sign. Also, it was nice that the Game Seven anthems were sung by not only an NC State student, but also an engineering major.

I had to pull for BRIND’AMOR since he wore a State hat.

^Choppack1 – “We play in the Canes arena.” I respectfully disagree. The world can be a big tent and one organization’s success shouldn’t preclude ours. In fact, this should facilitate our improvement. In my opinion, this type of thinking is the cousin to – “Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill are so great, how can we succeed?â€?

You had to be in the RBC last night to understand what an incredible environment was created. But remember this quote from a certain football coach – “Facilities don’t win championships; People do. What kind of atmosphere will Sidney’s first team play in next year? The answer is in the collective mirror of all NC State fans.

  9. choppack1 06/20/2006 at 9:50 AM #

Rick – I see your point. However, as I watched the game on the tube and saw the fans right next to the ice – it was a stark reminder to me that we play in a hockey arena. I’ve been to a lot of different arenas to watch b’ball and it seems to me – even in the lower level – you’re pretty far away from the action.

I’m not saying that the atmosphere can’t be electric in the RBC for Wolfpack basketball – it certainly can be. There have been several games when it was “electric.” However, we’ll never play for the national championship in the RBC. We’ll never even play for the conference championship in the RBC. They don’t serve beer in the RBC. For most games and our fans don’t have the opportunity to tailgate for several hours before hand.

These are some of the challenges we’re going to have to overcome. Hopefully, Sidney can put a type of product on the floor that will bring the electricity that I used to feel when I walked into Reynolds.

Here’s something to think about – name a great college basketball or college football “atmoshpere” for regular seasons in a shared pro arena.

    Wooooooooooo! Woooo! Woooooooooooo!

As it relates to NC State, I’m hoping the outpouring of emotion last night broke the floodgates in that stadium. All curses lifted. Time for Sid to hand a banner up there too.

    Go Canes! Go Wolfpack!

    ^Madison Square Garden

Alltel Stadium (Jacksonville — UGA vs. UF)

    Lincoln Financial Field (Army-Navy)

The RBC is a state-of-the-art facility and it is wonderful for the Canes/Wolfpack partnership.

-MSG – Regular season used by St. John’s. When you think of MSG do you think of St. John’s, the Rangers, or the Knicks?

Lincoln Financial Field (Army-Navy) – One game a year. One of the most storied rivals in history. How do you think it would be if Army or Navy played their regular season games there?

Alltel Stadium (Jacksonville — UGA vs. UF) – One game a year.

Maybe I should be more clear, a regular “home court” or “home field” for a college that is shared w/ a professional team.

Choppack1 – ^ very interesting points. I hadn’t thought much about the configuration for hockey but the glass does lend itself to putting more fans right on top of the action although there are fewer fans overall for hockey than basketball.

Regarding tailgating, I think the time of year has as much to do with this as anything. You don’t see a lot of tailgating at hockey games in the winter. By-the-way, you can buy beer at the RBC before and after our basketball games.

Is there any other college basketball team that shares an arena with a hockey team? Memphis and Arizona State are the only two teams I can think of that share an arena with an NBA team although there are probably others. Memphis seems to have a pretty good environment and I know Calipari uses this in a very positive manner in recruiting. Heck, I still miss Reynolds but I can’t believe an 18 year old recruit isn’t going to be much more impressed with the RBC. As nice as the RBC is, one of it’s most impressive features is the NC State basketball locker room & press area.

I remember seeing Bobby Knight interviewed by Larry King during his first year at Texas Tech. Texas Tech had a new and very unique basketball facility that Knight was pumping up. He actually made the comment that the only college facility on a par with Tech’s was NC State’s new arena. All in all, the RBC is an incredible asset to NC State. I vividly remember Valvano speaking to a Wolfpack Club meeting and just throwing the gauntlet down and saying something like “We have to build this building for NC State; It is personal now and we can’t back down on this. Lord, I miss that man.

    ^MCI Center – G’town hoops

    Metrodome – Minnesota football

    Speaking of facilities:

    Millions needed for U.Va.’s arena
Fund-raising goal is proving a challenge with deadline looming

  15. Dan 06/20/2006 at 11:20 AM #

G’Town and the Wiz both play at the name arena, right? And Maryland plays a few games there as well. The Caps might play there too.

  16. Cardiff Giant 06/20/2006 at 12:44 PM #

I think Lee Fowler would make a fine athletic director for the Hurricanes. He’s got a track record of building championship organizations.

  17. vtpackfan 06/20/2006 at 1:51 PM #

It is great facility, a huge asset to NC state and Wake Co. It now has hosted the Stanley Cup twice and will have its first present day championship banner hoisted (hopefully many more to come). Look, the great intimate atmospheres of College basketball are all gone, save Cameron, the Pitt, and a few others. It is great to have world class facilities, especially if you share them with current world class athletes. Thats what a recruit who see’s his future as an elite competitor will see at the RBC, and Sid will let them know that you can still go play in a sweaty barn like Cameron once in awhile. Way to go Cane, and GO PACK!

  18. Dan 06/20/2006 at 1:54 PM #

The RBC Center is now the home of Champions.

And I have all the confidence in the world that Sid is going to only add to that. The Canes and the The Wolfpack are going to make that a special building.

  19. choppack1 06/20/2006 at 2:14 PM #

Rick and VT – I don’t dispute the RBC’s value as a recruiting tool and I beleive that -especially when you combine our practice gym – we’ve got first-rate facilities. However, that’s really not the subject I was addressing.

I was addressing the electricity of the arena and why I consider the RBC less than ideal for b’ball viewing. I don’t know how it is helpful for NC State (especially when you consider the ratings for hocky) – other than the financial windful and publicity for Raleigh- which I do think is a good thing. (Rick you made some good points on the tailgating issue about the weather.)

But is it a windfall for NC State? I don’t know. It does prove that at least the building isn’t so cursed that a home team can’t win titles there. Of course, I never blamed those problems on the building. Like I said, it’s hard to find schools that share an arena w/ a pro team that enjoy a great home advantage. I don’t think the Stanley Cup title will change that.

I don’t want to be a negative Nancy – I am looking forward to seeing how the hiring of Sidney and his style of b’ball enhance my b’ball gameday experience. However, I do think that there are some serious challenges that we face from a fan’s enjoyment perspective that hockey doesn’t share.

  20. Girlfriend in a Coma 06/20/2006 at 2:22 PM #

NC State stands to benefit financially from the Canes’ title. We own 1/3 of the building (IIRC) and get a piece of the hockey attendance/parking/concession pie financially (they get a piece of our basketball concessions and parking). I was against the Canes initially when that horse’s ass was over there, but the current regime is very pro-State and any State fan should pull for the Canes to thrive, because our boat will also rise in that tide. Our arena would become a huge money pit if hockey vanished.

In a recent fiscal year the Canes (or Gale Force or the Centenial Committee — I forget how all the shells work) cut NC State a check for $7 million — our share of the hockey (and other arena-related) revenue.

GF in a coma – That is very good news. Thanks for sharing.

  22. garden gnome 06/20/2006 at 2:53 PM #

I understand all the arguments for the RBC, but nothing beats Reynolds. I know it’s not feasible anymore, but given the choice of where I’d like to see a State game, it’s not even close.

I guess I should be happy for the Hurricanes winning in our building, but really I couldn’t care less. In fact, I hate these stories about how all the State/Duke/UNC fans can rally around one team. The Stanley Cup victory is only going to be fodder for UNC and Duke fans to make fun of us with. There will be plenty of “at least there is one champion playing there” jokes, so get ready.

  23. Wulfpack 06/20/2006 at 3:12 PM #

I hear what you are saying, but how could you not care that the Canes are Stanley Cup Champions? And why is it so bad that an entire region/state can finally rally around a single team? Winning the Stanley Cup is a GIANT deal — the greatest accomplishment of any NC sports entity. The Canes are on top of the world, and for good reason. We owe them a debt of gratitude for bringing such excitement and sportsmanship to our neighborhood. The Canes’ success is nothing but a boon to our programs. Winning is all about an attitude. Let the Canes serve as an example of what can be accomplished when good men get together and do good things. Great men wear RED!

There is also going to be downtown parade Wed. at noon. It will be on Hillsborough St. near the State Capitol.

  25. garden gnome 06/21/2006 at 10:03 AM #

Wulfpack, I appreciate your excitement over the Hurricanes victory, but it is not “the greatest accomplishment of any NC sports entity”. Professional sports entity maybe. I realize that hockey interest is growing in NC, but it still does not touch college basketball around here. Any of the NCAA basketball championships by the local teams will be regarded as greater than the Stanley Cup victory around here.
