SMQ: Premature Assessment

Sunday Morning Quarterback is one of our favorite football blogs on the internet. (For more great blogs, please take a look on the right hand side of the front page of StateFansNation and scroll down to “Football Blogs”)

Last month, they ran an “absurdly premature assessment of NC State” that can be seen by clicking here.

HONESTLY, WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE SCHEDULE, SMQ’S THINKING: Seven wins, automobile accessory-inspired postseason trip. Five winning years out of six under Amato’s fist is good enough to get the benefit of the doubt in SMQ’s estimation, but 18 points per game doesn’t take you very far in the tougher ACC.

“I don’t think that changing QB’s had anything to do with reducing the TO’s. If the play calling with Stone had been the same as with Davis, then the TO’s would have gotten worse.”

I hear you, but unfortunately the Davis I saw did not react well when he was under pressure, nor when his confidence was down. I am not sure that Davis could have thrived in any offense in the second half of the season. His confidence was down in the toilet.

Hell, BoKnows, I am not ready to put a W against App. This is a BIG game for them and not for us. They are well coached, have a lot of talent thru the years (although I don’t know how much they lost from their Div 1AA championship team). Is State more talented? – OF COURSE. Is State as well-coached? – I’m not convinced of that (is anyone?). Are we as motivated as they are going to be? – NO WAY.
I have a bad feeling about this coming year. I think we have a chance to be really bad. We haven’t been known in several years as an over-acheiving program.
I hope I am very wrong.

I’m not getting my hopes too high either, but it’s hard not to let the adrenaline from the recent changes spill over onto the football field. I am waiting on Amato to put an end to the show boating, show some patience with conservative play calling early in games, and cut down even more on the uncalled for mistakes. He was heading in that direction late in the year last year as many have already pointed out. This is Chuck’s year to show what he can do without a dominant defense and a team that is fairly balanced talent wise, on both sides of the ball.

As for W’s and L’s — I’m glad that got some chatter up. I don’t think that because we beat someone last year — that we are a lock for this year. Based on that — then we could ink in L’s for Wake Forest and UNC. GT brings back a lot of QB experience. Last year was the first time we beat them in many years. And remember — we only got that W by the fact our defense saved the day in the last seconds. That game was not a strong W.

Emotion shold play an interesting role this year. For us in the UNC game. I agree the App’s will have a lot of emotion — but didn’t they lose a lot of the key players from last season? ECU should be a win but they will be motivated and coming at the end of the season — we might not be. Especially if the season is lackluster with a losing record and we go in unmotivated.

One thing that is consistent is that I don’t sense that a real good feeling exists for the coming year — only blind faith by some and anger at the coach. I’m sticking with Chuck for now and hopes he can keep his coaching staff around for a while — and that the musical chairs staffing is gone.

I have been reading over some old posts and it is a sad thought to have to agree with, but even the prospect of playing App State early, looms large on the schedule this year with all of the unknowns out there.

I am kind of afraid to say it, but I think we will we all be pleasantly surprised by this year’s team, and if the OL gets it’s act together, the QB position could be the biggest of all.
