Rivers Getting Pub

Now that Drew Brees is in New Orleans, Philip Rivers will be taking the reigns as the starting quarterback for the San Diego Chargers. (Related link from San Diego regarding the start of the Rivers era)

A new era has begun.

“I always hoped it was going to be right here,? Rivers said yesterday. “Now it’s here. I’m glad it’s here. I hope it’s here for a long time.?

After two years of his being little more than a rumor around here, Rivers has begun the process he and many others thought would have started long ago.

There is much fanfare to come: when Rivers makes his debut at minicamp next month; even more at training camp in July and then again when he starts his first exhibition game in August; and, finally, when he starts his first real NFL game Sept. 11 in Oakland.

In addition to attention in San Diego (see Chargers Coach Marty Schottenheimer talk about PR) Rivers is also garnering a lot of national media attention this offseason.

* ESPN talked at length during the NFL Draft about Rivers’ new role as a starting NFL quarterback.

* Today at 4pm (and to be repeated a couple of times in the next 24 hours), ESPN’s NFL Live is going to feature Rivers.

* On Sunday night at 11pm, Fox Sports “Around the South” is also going to feature Rivers.

I’ll never forget Rivers first play at State. Throwing that pass to Koren all that I could think was that we had this guy starting with a noodle for a right arm and we were going to be in trouble. Glad I was wrong.

I hate it, but Drew Brees stold most of Phillip River’s momentum and really put a damper on the anticipation. I hope he comes out smokin’ right off the bat this season and shows the Charger fans what he is capable of.

Is the offensive line that bad?

redfred, PLEASE don’t turn this thread into a bash-Amato session. Criminy. Also, have the care for the whole picture to give the man some credit for getting the penalties turned around midseason.

Thread topic: PHILIP RIVERS, starting QB, San Diego Chargers, NCSU alumnus makes good, can’t wait to watch him this fall. Is that hard to follow?

It might just turn out that playing (or not playing) behind Brees has been a major advantage for Rivers. A couple of years to learn without all the immediate pressure to win might have given him a chance to adjust to the NFL. All the pub coming from the Chargers is positive so now it is time for Rivers to shine and I think he will. We may be reminded what a special player he was while at State.

Sorry buddy. Didn’t mean to change the subject and didn’t mean to sound like I was totally bashing Amato, I want him to stick around. Now that I re-read my own post, thats all I did though. Wasn’t intentional.

SFN- beowolf is right, please delete those posts from this thread so it will stay on a great topic, and with my apologies.

Hopefully Rivers lasts in the league as long as Doug Flutie… Admittedly not much analysis here- but he really did a lot when he was down here. I just wish the defense of last year could have been around 3 years ago- we might have had a national champion if that had happened…

This may be one of the best reasons why ESPN getting MNF may turn out ok. The first Monday night line-up will include 2 games that night back-to-back and the second will be the Chargers. It will be interesting to get to see his first NFL start and if I am not mistaken there should be two pre-season games with the Chargers shown on ESPN as well. If Rivers turns out to be as good as many think every time one of our coaches go to see a recruit he should use this plus the recent NFL draft to NCSU’s advantage.

Having Marty as a head coach is a plus for PR, IMO. He’s going to put a game plan together that doesn’t require a QB to go out and make jaw dropping plays. Bernie Kosar, Elvis Grbac, and Drew Brees were not the type to make the Sportcenter highlight films, but they all had productive results when playing under Marty’s strict gameplan.

^ You’re exactly right Astral. If Rivers wouldve played on a team with that kind of D, State could have at least challenged for a national title. I think Rivers has a chance to shine, he’s somewhat under the radar now. Not that I think he’s the type to crumble under pressure anyway.

    You’re a good man, redfred.

Not sure if you guys heard this yet, but Philip Rivers was just named to the Pro Bowl before the season even starts, because he’s just that good.
