Lowe’s Rumored Staff (Updated 11:15am)

The Sidney Lowe era will begin soon and substantial rumors are circulating focused on the potential make-up of Lowe’s first staff in Raleigh. The composition of Lowe’s staff is going to be of the most extreme importance due to his lack of experience of collegiate coaching experience. We are NOT confirming these names as definite assistants of Lowe’s; we are just passing along what seems to be the direction in which the momentum and chatter is headed:

* Larry Harris is well known to Wolfpackers and would be a super addition to the staff. He provides and immediate bridge of credibility to the existing players on the team as well as key recruits that the Wolfpack has signed for next season and from whom we have earned verbal commitments in future years. Harris was the lead recruiter on most of Herb Sendek’s top commitments. Sendek was not adept at dealing with off-the-court personnel issues with his players and would almost exculsively turn to Harris to take care of the “softer stuff”. This led to Harris’ reputation as the most popular coach on Sendek’s past staffs.

* Pete Strickland has ties to both Lowe and Harris as he is a DeMatha High School alum and a Pitt undergraduate (like Harris). Strickland was the head coach at Coastal Carolina for seven years before being relieved of his duties prior to last season when former NC State assistant Buzz Peterson took over. We are still doing some digging on Strickland, who also coached Ravenscroft High School in Raleigh for one year. He is being billed as an excellent x-and-o coach. This link will take you to one of his last biographies at CCU.

* Monte Towe would be able to balance Sidney Lowe’s National Championship ring with one of his own after playing the same position as Lowe for the 1974 Wolfpack. Towe has been the Head Coach at the University of New Orleans for the last five years, but the toll of Hurricane Katrina may play a compelling role in incenting him to return to an assistant’s position at a top program (like he held under Norm Sloan at Florida). Towe has to have some decent experiences and perspectives after his years as a Head Coach. You can see Towe’s biography by clicking here.

* Quentin Jackson has been rumored as Lowe’s potential Director of Basketball Operations. Jackson shares DeMatha roots with Lowe and actually followed Lowe to Raleigh as a point guard for the Wolfpack in the mid 1980s. He played a key role in NC State’s last ACC Championship in 1987 and then played for the Harlem Globetrotters. Jackson currently owns a company that is featured in this article.

All-in-all, the potential staff seems to be very good. It may end up a home run, but feels more like a double being stretched into triple right now.

We feel super about Harris and Strickland. Monte Towe is a little bit of a mystery in light of the magnitude of the NCAA problems that he and Norm Sloan left in Gainesville when they exited the University of Florida program. But, the most perplexing issue of the names is that of Quentin Jackson.

The Director of Basketball Operations position is usually reserved for young coaches that are trying to break into the business with experience. Jackson is almost 40 years old and has no college basketball experience. In our opinion, Coach Lowe’s lack of collegiate experience does not afford him any wiggle room on his hires. He needs to be phenomenally strategic with every hire in order to build the most connected, diverse, and talented staff possible.

The Operations job is an opportunity for a head coach to draw from a different well of talent and diversify the perspectives of the staff – like someone from a Bob Knight or Tom Izzo or Rick Pitino lineage. Jackson may offer some unique perspectives built on a background of running his own business, but this currently feels like Lowe is hiring an old buddy into a situation where Lowe has a lot more to offer Jackson than Jackson offers NC State.

These are just initial thoughts that we may learn to be off base when we learn more specifics around the names and situations.

10:10 UPDATE We’ve been told from multiple sources that Larry Harris and Pete Strickland will be on staff at NC State. In our opinion, this is fantastic news. Harris is getting a very nice pay day with Coach Sendek in Arizona, but his family loves Raleigh. We are still tracking down some information on Strickland from some folks in Myrtle Beach, but our initial indications are that he has a good reputation related to recruiting, strong AAU ties, and a good bench tactician that Coach Lowe is going to need.

No word on how the national media is going to explain Larry Harris’ desire to come back to NC State after (supposedly) being treated so poorly by the NC State fan base.

10:20 UPDATE Monte Towe is still not confirmed for the staff. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported this morning that:

One stumbling point in Towe leaving would be the buyout clause in his contract. When Towe was given a three-year contract extension through 2009 two years ago, it included a buyout equal to Towe’s remaining annual salary, which would be $450,000.

Honestly – we just don’t know that much about Monte Towe’s x-and-o abilities or much about in what roles he would excel as an assistant at State. If Towe doesn’t work out, SFN would love to see a senior assistant with past head coaching experience riding shotgun with Coach Lowe; something similar to a Larry Shyatt at Florida or Jerry Dunn at West Virginia (thanks goes to a friend for those examples). Perhaps a Rob Evans or a Louis Orr? Perhaps our readers would have some other suggestions?

11:15 UPDATE Pack Pride has put together a little more biographical information on these projected assistant coaching names for premium subscribers. Link here.

Larry Harris and Strickland would be a great start to a staff for Lowe. Makes me feel a little better- filling in the blanks. Need to complete the staff with two young prodigies (an X/O kid & recruiter/former player on ncaa level).

reanalyst – Ricky Stokes is now the head coach at ECTC.

I like the discussion concerning young gun vs. senior associate (some good suggestions have been made). The biggest young gun I can think of is Josh Pastner of Arizona – basketball version of a Doc Holliday type recruiter. I doubt we could land him but everyone has expected him to get a head coaching job but it hasn’t happened. If he did it at another place, his stock would rise even further.

Any chance we can bring back the paper painter’s hat? How about a “Lunatic Fringe for Lowe!” paper painters hat? I’d buy it. The paper hat hasn’t been seen since Bert’s Surf Shop switched from wood chips to cotton. If collar-popped-pastel-polos can make a comeback, I’ve got faith in the paper hat. Viva la paper hat!

I also had one of those old painters’ caps back in the 80s. And what GAWolf says about Hunter being somewhat frustrated re style of play makes me feel even better about his coming back.

Very pleased by the Larry Harris situation.

I just can’t figure out why the UNC-Chapel Hill crowd hates this hire so much?…..they’re calling into the radio talk shows…you read the Charlotte Observer…and all they talk about is how this is a terrible hire for NC State. His NBA record was bad….he hasn’t graduated yet…. Are they concerned? Are theyjealous over the media attention? I just don’t get it.

I think it’s a fantastic hire. Other than Rick Barnes, I think Sid is the only one that truly wanted to come here just becuase it’s NC State….not so much about the money, or the “terms and conditions”…but just to have the honor to coach at his alma mater…..I think it will put an excitement into the game that we haven’t seen in a long, long time…..I like the pick…welcome home Sid.

RickJ: thanks for the tip on Stokes.

Chucky Brown definitely graduated. He did it a couple of years ago. He even donned a cap and gown and walked.

The DBO (Director of Basketball Operations) position is CRUCIAL!! This position is often the first form of contact our staff will have with recruits. This person is responsible for the administration of the program, some scheduling issues, and day to day operations, not to mention dealing with the administration on many issues such as academics, compliance, and development. To hire someone (QJ) who has no experience in coaching basketball (AAU – does that really count?) and running a program is a big risk. It is extremely important for this person to have the highest organizational skills, communication skills, and administration skills. Q may be great for the position, but personally I would like to see DBO’s at other schools considered as well.

I think if we can get Larry Harris back here we will be set. He would be the perfect one to help Sid learn the “whole college thing”. Sid is going to have a lot of things to deal with at this level that he didn’t have to think about in the NBA.

Question: I’m hearing a lot of people say that they hope that the DP are out of the playoffs ASAP so the Lowe can get to work ASAP. Is it just me or does anyone else think that a “new” NBA ring would look good to go along with the “old” NCAA ring when he goes to a kids house?

I’m hearing a lot of UNX fans, at work etc., who seem to be very upset by this hire. I don’t get it, why do they care? If it’s that bad isn’t it all the better for them?

What happened to Archie Miller? Did he go to ASU with Sendek?

  11. StateFans 05/05/2006 at 1:01 PM #

Yes. Archie is in Arizona with his wagon hitched to Herb Sendek.

Lowe will unite the fanbase so that everytime a team plays in RBC whether the opponent wins or loses they will HATE to play in RBC due to the crazy ass fans. That is something Wolfpackers can do right off the bat. Make Duke and UNX literally hate to come to the arena. Hell lets stick both games back in Reynolds and really make them hate to play NCSU.

This is the time for us to take the next step. We have a coach in place now everyone fall in behind Sidney with support.

  13. JimValvano 05/05/2006 at 1:06 PM #

    poor archie…he’ll never make it.

Speaking of Archie…how come Sean didn’t put him on HIS staff?

If his own brother won’t take him…why should we?

  14. WearRed92 05/05/2006 at 1:10 PM #

I know we’re all really hyped right now but I really like your idea NCSU4LIFE… welcome Sid back and the return to Cardiac Pack Nation with an annual game in Reynolds… flashback uniforms, bring in the old crowd noise meter… show clips of Sid and the ’83 team in the run to the championship… heck, if Monty’s on board let’s go back to ’74 clips too. Show the kids in school now what we’ve sorely missed. Thanks for filling me in on Archie. I always liked him & Sean.

coach lowe will do fine with the x’s and o’s—harris’ experience will help—the key to this hire is to bridge the post v era with the v era and before (sloan/case)—as an alumnus it is disconcerting that we speak of hiring sid, nate, and chucky, and are not sure where they stand regarding their undergraduate degrees—if we are to get the respect that we deserve—we must graduate kids at a high rate—and—play the kind of ball the program was famous for in the 40’s through the 80’s—this is the charge that faces coach lowe—and i believe he is the man for the job—dbo is a key post—dealing with high school coaches/recruits etc—as a head high school football coach i know that the schools with solid football ops guys usually do pretty well in recruiting—go get a good one sid—memo to roy and k—it’s on now bubba!!!

    This is from Towe’s bio:

In addition to his success in basketball, Towe also played on the Wolfpack baseball team for the legendary Sam Esposito during his freshman and junior seasons starting at second base. His team won the ACC championship his junior year. Along with Tim Stoddard, Towe participated in NCAA Tournaments that year there in two different sports.

Wow, ACC championships in multiple sports and an NCAA championship!! Towe must have had lots of home runs off the field too! 😉
