WRAL: Barnes Staying at Texas (Updated 9:45pm)

NC State has been Beamerized.

WRAL-TV is reporting that Rick Barnes has spurned NC State’s offers and will remain the head basketball coach at the University of Texas.

Dave Glenn’s Blog has an update on Thursday with quotes in it.

“We’re working very hard, and we want to do it as quick as possible,” said Herman Rooker, a Raleigh resident who served on the Wolfpack Club board for eight years. “I think this process will tell us a lot about Lee Fowler.”

Little Ricky from Hickory will now ride off into the sunset as a Big 12 retiree. With the ride will come some increased expectations from Texas fans that will come with his increased pay check that should be announced soon.

True to form, nobody at Texas really seems to care very much. The news is all over the NC State internet community, but hasn’t even made the front page of InsideTexas.com as of yet. The only threads on the Texas message boards regarding the news were orginated by NC State fans.

SFN’s Take:
We tried hard. We missed. It’s time to move on. It shouldn’t be that big of a deal. NC State put its best foot forward with a hard sell on a candidate that fit the job perfectly. We should be very proud of the effort expended; we won’t know how proud we should be of the execution of the process/search until this is all completed. Lee Fowler still has to make a believer out of us.

In the end, State waited a few years too late to make the move on Barnes, just as they have missed opportunities for names like Bruce Pearl, Bill Self, John Calipari, and Thad Matta in recent years. Had NC State been more proactive in the management of its basketball program some five years ago when Herb Sendek should have been fired, we wouldn’t be in this situation now.

As we shared with you earlier today, John Calipari’s representatives have not been provided the human courtesy of a returned phone call from Lee Fowler despite multiple attempts at reaching out to the NC State search process.

If NC State has spoken to as many as ten potential candidates as reported earlier today, then how the hell is John Calipari NOT one of them?

If the next logical step is not John Calipari…and Jay Wright is not interested in leaving Villanova as reported…then where does Lee Fowler go next?

That question means that Fowler’s NC State coaching search moves from the “obvious stage” to the “thinking stage.” That is what scares the hell out of the majority of NC State fans. God help us.

I guess if “John wants the job very badly” he will come, now that it is open again…Of course, didn’t this site have close sources saying Rick Barnes would come running to coach State if Herb was fired??

Do you guys offer investment advice as well??

D*mn it! I was kind of hoping to screw the Shorthorns in the process here…I had warmed up to Barnes out of pure desperation.

    WE BETTER LAND CALIPARI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. PackisRolling 04/06/2006 at 7:12 PM #

no Barnes and Fowler won’t return Calipari’s calls…for a minute there I got excited about Barnes and forgot we are NC State. This seems oh so typical.

  5. Sammy Kent 04/06/2006 at 7:12 PM #

That’s too bad if true. This is Rick’s last chance to come back to the Big Four and the ACC….unless the next coach absolutely tanks the program, which ain’t gonna happen. This would make me quite sad, but if true, let us move on.

I’d still go after Bruce Pearl.

  6. Chris 04/06/2006 at 7:14 PM #

    This is disappointing.

My next choice would be Calipari…but I’m not about to hold my breath hoping for him.

I’m willing to bet a large sum (10 bucks) that Fowler got tunnel-vision with Barnes like most of us did. Calipari is really an equal catch, probably a bit better considering the job he did at UMass is head-and-shoulders above Barnes at James Madison, Clemson or Providence. Regardless of the situation leading up to this point, WE MUST GET CALIPARI!! There is now NO ROOM for ERROR. Get him and give him a damn gold mansion if you have to. If Calipari stays at Memphis, then Lee Fowler has absolutely no business being a director of the Hillsborough Street YMCA, let alone an ACC school’s athletic program.

no guarantees Pearl comes here either. If any remember UNC-Ch’s coaching search after Gutt, for some reason I feel we’re on the same journey.

Whats that saying about trying and failing is better than not trying at all?

I’m glad I’m a State fan. We always prepare ourselves for a big disappoinment. I’m feel OKAY at the moment. Happy to have closure.

Now…time to return some phone calls to Johnny C. and hope for the best.

    *WE MUST GET CALIPARI!!*

Folks, take a deep breath. This “WE MUST GET x” isn’t helping anything. Scream at the end of the search if we get Dave Odom, not during the middle when so many coaches are still in play.

PackisRolling – you are correct – very typical!!

i bet fowler answers calipari’s calls now. This might be good because whether we want to admit it or not (easier to admit now) Barnes, Caliari, Wright, Tubby, Pitino, and a few others are almost eqaully qualified and could all bring good things to state, now maybe we shouldt just say ____(insert name here) is our first and only choice. It appears liek some coaches are still inquiring about the job, we will get someone good soon, we have to be positive, gopack

  13. cameron 04/06/2006 at 7:24 PM #

I pray tha lee fowler will return some phone calls, If he screws this up I wouldn’t he is the next one who must go.

  14. choppack 04/06/2006 at 7:26 PM #

Cameron – Maybe he should have been the one to go first since he’d be heading up any search.

  15. cameron 04/06/2006 at 7:28 PM #

that is true. I really don’t see how it is possible to screw this up, with the amount of money reported that we have to offer and some “big” names out there to get, He better land the big fish. I don’t want to hear that we have hired someone I have never heard of with the word potential attached to his name.

Fowl up is at it again!
Our hand has been tipped. Can’t wait for the media to say I told you so.
    This suks.

Very disappointing but not completely unexpected. The story on JC really upsets me more.

Barnes was highly unlikely anyway. His job at Texas was just too good, prying him away would have taken a miracle, and I don’t blame Lee Fowler for being unable to work miracles.

This is why the fact we aren’t even talking to Calipari is so frustrating. Calipari would have good reason to come here – Barnes did not. Return his phone calls!

Why do I have the sinking feeling were going to get stuck with someone else who although he’s clean as a whistle, he’s a whistle with the pea inside missing — unable to make any noise.

  20. GrandWolf 04/06/2006 at 7:42 PM #

I have read that Calipari is not an option with Fowler and some of the “Fat Cat” donors. Well, there you have it. Barnes, Calipari, and Wright are the three candidates that would NOT have to be sold to the NC State basketball fan base. The same fan base that was termed “Herb Sendek’s Boss” and ultimately drove Herb to seek employment elsewhere.

Barnes it seems is not coming to Raleigh, Wright WILL stay put in Philly, and Fowler & Co are rumored to be ruling out Cal. So… that means that Fowler will NOW have to hire someone that will have to be sold to the NC State fanbase.

    Way to go Lee!

  21. JTO 04/06/2006 at 7:43 PM #

Let’s try not to blame Fowler so fast. I don’t think RB turned the job down because of anything Fowler did or did not do….and I bet there’s more than one coach in the country who will be a good fit. Let’s keep hoping we find a WINNER.

^ I forgot Glenn has the association with WRAL…makes sense how they scooped everyone now

  25. what now 04/06/2006 at 7:51 PM #

You no, I’m not that upset….I think the State fans fell in love with Barnes when he got in Dean’s face. And that had more to do with our desire for him than his coaching. He really didn’t do much at Clemson that truly impressed me, and if you’ve ever been to Austin, TX., pretty darn easy to recruit to that place. I think we’re getting to caught up in getting a “big name” coach, and we need to get the right coach. If we keep swinging for the fences and striking out, I think we’ll look like idiots. A lot of big name coaches don’t want to have to recruit in/to Coach K’s and Roy’s back yard. So, for one, I’m not going to get to caught up in getting a name….but we will need someone that can recruit, AND COACH.
