No News Doesn’t FEEL Like Good News (3:55 Update)

Are we just pessimistic? Our 50/50 feeling this morning is starting to slide the bad direction.

We think that State has the ability to go to $2.0 million per year for Calipari despite, which is higher than Memphis’ best offer of $1.5 million to $1.7 million.

We won’t spend time crunching the negative side of the equation until we have to. So, please don’t run off thinking that we have inside scoop that we aren’t getting Calipari. We don’t have that scoop.

We do know that Memphis is working hard to keep him. Of course, we are concerned with the fact that he is currently sitting in Memphis around his family, his friends, and his team while we are all sitting in Raleigh. That is not a great bargaining position in which to be sitting.

The good news is that at this time (3:30pm ET), Memphis does not yet have an answer from Calipari, either.

Dave Glenn has updated his blog and is reporting that Calipari is currently meeting with the Athletics Director and key boosters (3;45 ET). A few thoughts:

* If he Calipari telling them Memphis that he is taking NC State’s job, then the wheels will be in motion, team meetings will be called, and the news should flush out quickly.

* If he is discussing Memphis’ proposed deal and not providing an answer to anyone, then we doubt that anyone gets an answer before tomorrow.

* If he is telling Memphis that he is staying, we don’t know if NC State will sweeten the pot or if it will matter (since Calipari has maintained from the start of his overtures to NC State that this wasn’t about money).

Let’s just say that NC State officials are…we’ll use the word “antsy”.

In the end, this will all boil down to how truthful Calipari has been with NC State from the beginning. If the pieces of the puzzle that he represented as most important to him (ACC’s stage, competitiveness on the national stage, University’s commitment to him) are truly the drivers of the decision, then there is nothing that Memphis can do about the situation.

If those issues are not the key drivers of his thought process, then this was all about money and NC State was played masterfully by a maestro.

We will find out in the next 24 hours, but we urge everyone not to jump to the negative conclusion until the news is official. Please behave the way that you did as the Rick Barnes talks dissolved.

…developing…

Come on John you know you want to come to the ACC and be a golden god of basketball.

OK. This 30-something wasn’t of legal driving age the last time something that looked bad for Wolfpack sports morphed into something good.

So … who’s next? Should we just go out and hire Mike O’Donnell or one of the other guys Herb Sendek would use at this stage in recruiting to put a body in an unfilled scholarship position until the next year? Might as well.

Take a deep breath and repeat after me:

No matter what happens, Herb is gone
No matter what happens, Herb is gone
No matter what happens, Herb is gone…

If all Memphis can do is offer 1.5-1.7- and I think we all knew they would counter our initial offer – than I think we will get our man.

We simply beat the Tigers in every category (contrary to what Tiger Fans say on their message boards about playing on the Grizzlies court). Tradition, Conference, fan base, facilities, national stage, and the list goes on.

It makes sense to “ponder” the counter offer from Memphis before he publically states he’s a Wolfpacker!

    We are SOOOOOOO close!

  8. Sam92 04/10/2006 at 3:28 PM #

it’s like a deal closing (which I’m in the middle of right now), it ain’t done until it’s done

Calipari might stay at Memphis, but I think he’ll come. We offer a stage that Memphis just doesn’t, and I think he wants that.

but tvp is right, whether or not we get Calipari, Herb is gone, which is a relief unto itself

Let’s hope that Cal isn’t using us as a way to get a bump in pay. I see that Barnes got 400k more a year from UT after he turned us down.

I hear ya, Beo. I was NINE when we won the national title. THIRTEEN when we won the last revenue sports title OF ANY KIND. Hopefully, the next one will happen before full dementia sets in, but I get more doubtful every day.

He was at the very least going to allow them to counter, now we’ll just dig deeper into our pockets.

Cal is already rich and Memphis is upping his salary anyway. There is no state income tax in TN so they don’t even have to offer as much money as we do.

Anyway, I think if he comes it won’t be because of the money. It will be because of the allure of the ACC. And nobody knows if that pull is strong enough for him.

offer Cal another mil to ice the cake.

My freshman year at NCSU was 1983….

My motto upon graduating in 1987? Never give up… never, ever give up!

We will get Calipari and it will be a better choice (than RB) in the long run.

Hopefully “Big Pig” has gotten hooked on the smack as much as we have, and opens his wallet even wider.

Given how hesitant Memphis was to offer the FIRST raise, I don’t see them offering a second. Of course, that didn’t help in the Barnes negotiations, either. 🙁

The inside circle at NCSU believe Calipari IS coming. I had an email from someone who is chasing the story from both sides. Long story but I’m very optimistic at this point.

    Big Pig… LOL

does Memphis have mil-bil-lionaire boosters also?

Just heard Herman Rooker, someone many of you know, tell David Glenn on 850 that it will be tomorrow before it is official.

I want to see Big John wear a real loud plaid jacket to the first game at RBC…a la Norm Sloan.

That would really shake up the tarholes and dookies big time…

Memphis has fed-ex founder. We also have the SAS billions to access. Cal could be waiting for their offer so he can get more from us.

    RELAX…just talking…

  25. RAWFS 04/10/2006 at 3:38 PM #

Does U of Memphis have gazillionaires?

Yes. Fred Smith, founder of Fed-Ex. Ironically, he wrote a paper outlining his business plan for FedEx and received a low grade.

Wonder if that was at Memphis?
