‘Job is Cal’s if he Wants it’ – Our Take

Morning update

The most popular flight in the history of Duplin County ended today with what we think is very good news.

Although the Masters (Go Tim Clark) ran over on on WRAL, their digital channel has indicated that their sources say that the job is “his (Calipari) job if he wants it.” (Link to website.)

(They also had a good graphic with his career highlights showing that he is 7th all-time winningest through 13 seasons.)

* When we posted our morning update, we did not know that Chancellor Oblinger (and others from NC State) were a part of the contingent that flew to Memphis. We think that this is fantastic news as it indicates that this was a finalization of finer points of the deal as well as the face to face discussion of certain issues that were important to both sides.

* You’ve got to give PackPride.com some great credit for being on top of this today and getting pictures of the NC State contigency as they were exiting the plane. What does the N&O do all day?

* For WRAL-TV to report that the job is Calpari’s if he wants it AFTER the meeting is wonderful news. We find it hard to comprehend that State would officially “offer” the position to Calipari if we were not assured that he would accept it.

At this point, we re-direct you some of our comments made earlier today that we think are still pertinent:

* Calipari’s interest in State seems to have nothing to do with money. State can probably pay Calipari more than Memphis, and we hear that Calipari isn’t pushing State for the same money that we were bouncing around with Rick Barnes. State inherently offers something that Memphis just cannot offer – the national stage and the bright lights of the Atlantic Coast Conference. One of the only intelligent members of the Memphis message board explained it nicely:

Its because college basketball in north carolina is crazy. there are huge rivalry games mutliple times a year, you’re in a national spotlight with the majority of games at least making regional tv coverage. until i got here i never understood how crazy these people are about college basketball. little kids pick on each other and get into fights over it. these people are like jihadists, they are completely insane for their teams. the intense hate for other teams, its insane.

Cal knows that if he goes to state he will looked at like a God. The vicious disapointment of Sendek will turn into strident calls of praise and hope.

These people are crazy, yeah its in the shadow of Duke and UNC but I think Cal would enjoy the challenge of bringing a team back to the forefront.

* If Calipari were to accept the job, he would most likely call a team meeting tonight or call each of his players to personally tell them the news. Additionally, he would reach out to his recruits (probably today). There will be no stopping the flow of information once this happens.

* State people would start talking about a ‘deal being done’ and then ‘confirmation’ would come from the Memphis side. We haven’t heard anything from the State side, which is consistent with the search’s quietness throughout the process.

We have been watching the Memphis Tiger Message Boards for information, but there doesn’t seem to be much of anything there but grade schoolers. The simplistic nature of the Memphis boards highlight just how awesome the NC State online community is.

Some Wolfpackers on the Memphis boards have posted some pretty funny pictures that we have linked below:

As probably the only person on these boards who actually saw Yogi Berra play in YAnkee stadium, I will fall back to the most famous Yogi-ism “It aint over till its over” . I’m sure the group that flew to Memphis think they have him, but now its in Memphis’s court, and we need to see what they do to try and sway him back.

the memphis board has NO insiders. Is there another board?

  3. WAWolf 04/09/2006 at 7:00 PM #

Clandestine sources, subterfuge, tracking FAA flight #s, wow this whole deal is more fun than an episode of ‘Alias’ (except for Jennifer Garner’s pouty lips…)

Cardiff Giant, do you see that pic with Calipari and Fowler in the plane. Hilarious!

It is true, the NC State message boards are awesome.
I think more than anything this process has brought together the people that were in the “Herb Hater” and “Herb Lover” camps, at least for now. Maybe this unity will carry over into next season?

The Memphis board is of course saying we’re “class less” by not asking for permission to speak with Cal. Then why was their AD flying back to Memphis this morning if he didn’t know about it? I really want to get excited about him coming here….but I just have to hold back.

  11. cam 04/09/2006 at 7:30 PM #

hope all of this is true, IF so basketball will be fun again. If this dosen’t go down, who will be the next choice?

The plane image is great, just tell me: where is there water between Raleigh and Memphis? lol

Maybe they’re going on a celebratory jaunt

“Maybe this unity will carry over into next season?”

If Cal takes this job then it is next season. No mention of the “Red n’ White” game, or is that what all the games @ Carter Finley are going to be called this year?

  14. highstick 04/09/2006 at 7:38 PM #

Yogi, dude, I’m older than you. I watched Mantle strike out 5 times in one game and it broke my heart!

I was not really thrilled about Calapari until I watched him on the BDSS and did some research, thanks to SFN. Now I’m on the “train”! Let’s get this guy and turn the ACC applecart upside down!

Before we forget it, THANK YOU TOMMY BURLESON FOR HAVING THE BALLS TO SAY WHAT YOU FELT! I sat behind you in a philosoply class at State and I will forever be grateful for what you’ve done over the past few weeks!

Like I said early today…I am having a Ball of FUN and so will Coach Cal if he takes the offer…nobody worry…we have done our part….the ole saying ~ let the bird fly and if it comes back its ours…I like the Bird (plane) in the picture! :o)

    GO PACK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im way too afraid to hope right now. All ten figners and all ten toe’s are crossed. I’d cross my glutes if I could.

    Please, let this happen.

  17. Howling Wolf 04/09/2006 at 8:17 PM #

    Ain’t gonna happen. πŸ™

  18. Jason2413 04/09/2006 at 8:24 PM #

This looks very good. You don’t “interview” a coach like Calipari, so it was probably a foregone conclusion that a formal deal was going to be offered. You don’t formally offer unless you know the decision either, so I feel good that Calipari will be our coach next season.

Following all of this on PackPride.com and SFN has been a roller coaster ride. Thanks go to both sites for their phenomenal sleuth and research work to keep the online Wolfpack community up to date on everything.

Whether you were a Sendek supporter (which I was) or critic, you have to love how it looks like this might turn out. You couldn’t have asked for a better outcome than hiring Calipari. Everyone just needs to pray for an official announcement in the near future.

  19. Andy 04/09/2006 at 8:24 PM #

    “AinÒ€ℒt gonna happen. :(”

Coach Cal coming or Dan being able to cross his glutes?

  20. Wolf80 04/09/2006 at 8:34 PM #

Donn Ward:”My primary role as (FAR) will be to assure the academic integrity and rules compliance of our athletic programs” www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/univ_r…ticle7.htm

Faculty Rep Donn Ward along with the Chancellor on this trip makes me think it was more to “size up” Cal on some of the acedemic issues that have been in question. I hope there was a firm offer this time, but I am not so sure.

    To clarify:

Calipari at NCSU. Ain’t gonna happen. πŸ™

highstick – I watched the Rangers play at the old Madison Sq Garden, I lived a few blocks away in Hells Kitchen. Anyway if you sat in class with Burleson you came in a few years after I graduated. I recall watching the 68 team beat the Dukies… what was it….12 – 8 I think. Anyway at least I haven’t gone senile yet like old 58 Kennel. If I ever start comparing any coach we have to Jesus Christ….someone please put me out of my misery !

  23. Steven_1974 04/09/2006 at 8:58 PM #

Jeez, enough with the defeatist attitude by a few of you. You guys must be really cheerful people in person.

  24. Wolf-in Around 04/09/2006 at 9:13 PM #

Calipari is coming…and I feel so GREAT about it and what Fowler has done that if he does not then I will never post again…Have a FANTASTIC evening because tomorrow will bring us positive results…tonight is Christmas Eve…GO PACK and I tip my hat to all you Super Great Fans…we did not Fire Sendek he just could not handle the heat in the kitchen…Coach Cal will make his own heat and return us to better days at North Carolina State University…Home of the WolfPack!! Howlllllllllllllllllllll…

  25. Jeff 04/09/2006 at 9:27 PM #

Won’t Cal face a helluva lot of discomfort and pressure from Memphis fans if he stays after a public courtship like this? What about the negative reputation that he would get by reaching out to State and playing us in such a manner? I just don’t buy that “talks will continue”.
