Holland: State’s Job Considered Good

Terry Holland has quickly grown to one of my favorite people in all of college athletics.

We highlighted this quote for you a couple of weeks ago, and today we want to draw attention to something else from Terry.

I don’t think that we have linked to our friends over at The Red & White from State in a while, so we will send you there for this nugget from Holland that he emailed to the Associated Press for an article by Keith Parson:

“In spite of things we are all hearing right now, professionals in this business believe the N.C. State job is a good one and that they will get a good coach. The fact that they have been turned down actually shows that they are setting their sights high and it is hard to understand how that can be considered by some as such a negative.’

Perhaps Terry is auditioning for a potential Athletic Directorship at NC State one day?

I like Holland. That man doesn’t hesitate to lower the boom.

I wish that would be the case. I met Terry several years ago when he had come back to Davidson as AD. He is a class act. I think I remember him saying that his brother played football at State.

Holland has, or had?, a house north of Wilmington, NC. I was having lunch with some guys at local diner one day when he walked in. When he walked by I said “Hello Coach Holland” and he stopped and asked if he could join us. He seemed really down to earth. We made a few commits about basketball but he just let us go on didn’t really commit too much. He is a classy guy and he definitely had talent there at UVA for a while. Probably should have gotten more out of it.

Holland is no dummy. Keeping his options open.

I think he’d be just a dandy fit at NC State.

If you look at his record at Davidson, UVa and now at ECU he doesn’t mind making decisions and changes. A proven winner wherever he has been.

A winner attitude….he does not mind making changes to any program that is not producing, just look at the changes he has made at ECU.

As both a coach and AD, Terry Holland is a class act. Personal friends with my dad to this day, I’d love to have someone of his caliber be associated with NCSU! He actually gave me a lamp of the ’74 championship team when I was 8 years old! Someone who knows and has been involved in the great history of ACC basketball!

I met him in Charlottesville a few years ago. I expected a quick hello and goodbye, but he took us places in Scott Stadium I have never seen in any college football stadium my life, and never expected to.

A truly decent man but also decisive and competitive. And as nice in person as anyone you would ever meet. I know at ECU he actually walks the campus and asks students about his department. Wow! What a concept-from any AD. Since he is a Sampson County native, he is all but back home at ECU (in nearby Pitt County), so I would be surprised if that is not his last job before retiring. But any school that gets him as AD would be fortunate.
