Gonzalez off the Board

Bobby Gonzalez was all the rage a couple of years ago when he was leading his Manhattan Jaspers to a Sweet 16 appearance (ironically during their appearance in the RBC Center). Two years ago, it was rumored that Gonzalez was going to land in the ACC at the University of Miami, but the Hurricanes ended up pulling the surprise hiring of Frank Haith.

Today, Gonzalez was “called up to the big time” as he was hired as the next head coach at Seton Hall.

Anyone who would dare consider one-hit wonder, Jim Laranaga for the NC State job may want to take a look at the following:

Larranaga withdrew from consideration, and Seton Hall on Thursday called the other candidates to say the school was going in another direction — Gonzalez’s direction.

That’s code for “Seton Hall didn’t want Laranaga”.

Additionally, Greg Doyel added the following to the NC State coaching rumor mill:

North Carolina State: The Wolfpack have put together a package in the neighborhood of $2.2 million annually to entice Texas coach Rick Barnes. No word on Barnes’ response, though his agent is believed to be smiling like a Cheshire cat as he prepares to call Barnes’ boss at Texas for a raise.

Meanwhile … N.C. State also has inquired about George Washington’s Karl Hobbs and LSU’s John Brady. Regarding Hobbs, N.C. State discovered the same thing that helped stymie Cincinnati: Hobbs has an unusually large buyout clause at GW, which makes hiring him fiscally problematic. The Wolfpack won’t pay $2.2 million for Hobbs. Good thinking.

Is this a joke?

We may not pursue John Calipari because some people have concerns about his ethics but we will consider pursuing John Brady?

We will refrain from any/many comments on this until we know more.

I believe that there is a connection between Brady and Fowler. If this hire happens, there will be a connection between Fowler and my size 14 shoe! I would rather have Gillispie than Brady/Haith/Laranever/etc.

    Gonzalez who?

Calipari is a fine coach and we will be glad to have him lead the Pack. I think the ethics thing is media fodder and will die off. Well, maybe the other side of the triangle will keep harping on it, but we can always counter with Roy giving Kansas seniors “special gifts”.
This tunnel vision with Barnes is starting to scare me to tell you the truth. There are others out there who can fit the bill and take us to the same stage that the Tarholes and Dookies now play on. Putting all our eggs in Austin is not a good idea.
I’m absolutely confident that Fowler has people working several other avenues besides UT street. I don’t know why I feel this way, but I do.

I see your Barnes, and I raise you a Calipari!

What has Calipari ever done? I really don’t know.

I’m sorry but the $$$ numbers for barnes that are being floated around…he’s just not worth that amount honestly…I’d rather show those numbers to Jay Wright and his wife to get them here from Villanova. Here’s more info on Gonzalez for those who haven’t looked into him (and why I’m congratulating Seton Hall). http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/9341408

There is a reason why Gonzalez was not offered the position at Miami. He was interviewed and researched and not offered. It isn’t because an assistant coach at another school had ties to the ACC.

excuse me while i say hell no to a guy that Herb pounded by 20+ this year…

If we end up without Barnes, Cal, Wright, and I swear I’d ask Bruce Pearl hopefully Gilliespie says yes, if not offer Haith and get on with it…

If fowler gets brady, and not cal or barns, I am going to be so mad, This guy has had one good year, and we want to give him the driver seat to our program, I don’t think so. Go for a proven winner not a one hit wonder, becasue it probley won’t happen again for him. I want a proven winner so there will be no guessing about the results

We missed out a really good coach here. John Brady is a fool who got lucky to find incredible talent in his backyard. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. He will crash and burn if any of this three top players goes pro after this year.
