Da Plane! Da Plane!

tatoo

Cyberspace today has been hilarious.

We don’t have a clue who was on Wendell Murphy’s return flight from Memphis. But, we refer you to our comments earlier in the afternoon:

* We think that it is good news that a meeting is already scheduled. IF State and Calipari sign a deal this morning, then Calipari already has an audience scheduled with his Athletics Director.

* Calipari would most likely call a team meeting today or call each of his players to personally tell them the news. Additionally, he would reach out to his recruits (probably today). There will be no stopping the flow of information once this happens.

* State people would start talking about a ‘deal being done’ and then ‘confirmation’ would come from the Memphis side. Want to help us out? Share some good Memphis message boards and websites in our comments section. But, please do NOT go to their sites and talk to them.

You may want to pay attention to this link, but please don’t antagonize them.

…..haven’t seen anything about the Memphis AD being asked to talk to Cal….I didn’t think an “offocial” meeting between Cal and us would happen unless permission had been asked for….

Did Lee Fowler know the answer?

    Refering to the WRAl story,
I thought Coach Cal was someone you don’t interview

    Memphis’ Calipari To Succeed Sendek?
Tigers Coach Reportedly Meets With N.C. State Officials

    POSTED: 5:37 pm EDT April 9, 2006
    UPDATED: 6:34 pm EDT April 9, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State University’s search for a new head men’s basketball coach now has a singular focus: Memphis Tigers coach John Calipari.

Wolfpack athletic director Lee Fowler, N.C. State Chancellor James Oblinger and other university officials returned to Raleigh on Sunday afternoon after a multi-hour meeting with Calipari.

Fowler declined comment Sunday on anything concerning the head-coaching position left vacant by Herb Sendek more than a week ago.

Obviously, the talks are heating up, and sources tell WRAL that the job is now Calipari’s to turn down.

State’s pursuit of Calipari has clearly rattled the tiger’s cage at Memphis. Tigers athletic director R. C. Johnson canceled a weekend trip to work on a new contract for Calipari.

His current contract runs through 2010 with a base salary of $1.1 million, but State can absolutely top that since the Pack was ready to give Texas coach Rick Barnes nearly twice that amount.

Calipari is one of the winningest coaches ever at this point in his career with 341 wins and 130 losses. Only six other coaches all-time had more wins in their first 13 seasons. Calipari also has eight NCAA tournaments on his resume.

i hope so, if this is a ploy by Goober & Co. to make it look like they did all they could, just to set us up for some busch league coach, i for one will be beyond ticked

you asked the hottest girl in school to go to the dance, and she told you her mom won’t let her go. Now, you ask “the girl next door” who you think is pretty cute and feelers indicate she may like you back. You just sent one of your friends to go ask what her answer is, and you are pacing around your bedroom with all your sports banners hung, waiting to find out if she will go to the dance with you. You don’t have a third choice, cause “the girl next door” is you you REALLY want to go with you. Please let it be… please let it be… please..

I wonder if we contacted the Memphis AD before we spoke to Cal. I mean, I figure we probably did, since he cancelled his trip and everything, but maintaining a respectable image through all this means a lot to me, and I’m sure to other Wolfpack fans.

i saw some memphis fans griping about that on their board? surely we go by protocol, and not fly out there on a whim?

[…] This is from ACC Sports Journal’s website: “(The NCSU football search) was done professionally, and it was done quietly. The consultant did the work, Lee (Fowler) kept it quiet, and no one was tracking my airplane on the internet. … I do believe this is a home run. (Tom O’Brien) told us exactly what he is all about. He is about winning championships on the field. He is about having discipline off the field, graduating his players, getting everyone their degrees and becoming productive citizens. “To me, the future of N.C. State athletics looks very bright. Sidney (Lowe) has already demonstrated that he can coach. He has already demonstrated that he can recruit. Give us another year or two in basketball. My guess is that our football team has more talent, comparatively speaking, than our basketball team does right at this particular time.” […]
