Better News Night / Sat Morn Update (11:15 AM)

We didn’t feel too good on Thursday night because we were struggling with news that Lee Fowler/NC State had been unresponsive to overtures from John Calipari’s people and that NC State’s courtship with Rick Barnes had come to an end.

However, we are feeling a lot better today!!

Since our afternoon update and analysis we’ve been doing some digging and we feel even better about some of the objective/analytical comments that we shared.

John Calipari

* The most exciting item of the day comes from the news that someone not named Lee Fowler who is as close to the NC State search as possible has had major contact with John Calipari.

* The conversations with Calipari have evolved to the point of discussing specific criteria/stipulations that need to be in place for Calipari to accept the job.

* One example of a stipulation for Calipari would be that NC State create a formalized internship program for its basketball players like the one Memphis has at Fed Ex. Calipari wants his kids to have the opportunity well-rounded college experiences and build their overall resumes. Additionally, having his players earn NCAA-approved money in a controlled environment reduces the need and temptation to look for money from agents &/or rogue boosters.

* We were obviously very concerned last night when we reported that the “officially unofficial” search team had not yet reached out to Coach Cal despite his overtures to State. Our concern was rooted largely in the frustration that some of Cal’s contacts were expressing to us. We knew that State was already going to need to work around the “ego issue” created by the appearance that Cal resided on the #2 spot State’s list.

* We do not know if the NC State administration has completely “signed off” on Calipari as of yet. But, WRAZ-TV news in Raleigh reported tonight that Calipari had risen to the status of #1 target of the Wolfpack’s search. There is extra reason to listen to WRAL/WRAZ because the stations are by Capitol Broadcasting, the same company who own the media rights to NC State Athletics.

* Dave Glenn made an appearance on Raleigh radio on Saturday morning basically concurring with our comments. He also mentioned that there may be still be some division amongst some key NC State figures regarding Calipari’s potential candidacy.

* We suggest that anyone whose opinion matters in the search and who has expressed hesitation about Calipari needs to meet with him. Doesn’t anyone deserve at least that courtesy before you make a sweeping decision regarding his career and our program? We have 100% confidence that anyone who meets Coach Calipari won’t have any concerns after the meeting. Our biggest fear is that some of our own idiots would scare him away in such a meeting!

* We believe that if Wendell Murphy puts his stamp of approval on Cal, then Lee Fowler will follow. We also believe that if Murphy and Fowler sign-off on Cal then Chancellor Oblinger will follow.

* NC State’s administration and athletics department have worked damn hard for the last 17 years to create a balanced and academic-focused athletics program. Additionally, Chancellor Oblinger’s reputation amongst the academic side of the University (and the community) is sterling. If the leaders of NC State give their stamp of approval to any candidate, NC State deserves the benefit of any doubt and trust of the entire community/media that nothing would be done that would risk our strong academic reputation.

Rick Barnes

* One of the reasons that the Rick Barnes chapter is not closed is because NC State upped our offer when Barnes was leaning towards saying no (but never told us to go away for ever). The annual compensation numbers is now rumored to be north of $2.0 million.

* Evidently, Barnes’ interest in the job was very high at the beginning of the week and gradually faded as the week progressed because of family concerns – his children are very integrated into Austin and UT. And that is reason #2 million why Lee Fowler’s decision not to fire Herb Sendek five years ago (when Barnes was only three years into living in Austin) was one of the worst in the history of our institution.

* If you were Texas, would you really pay Barnes $2.2 million in light of the fact that he has never won a Big 12 Tournament Championship and only made one Final Four in 8 years? We’re not so sure Texas is inclined to pay but so much when they could turn their attention 90 miles down the road and steal Billy Gillispie from Texas A&M for a million dollars less per year.

* So why would NC State pay Barnes that much? For NC State, it has been because of the uncannily strong “fit”. It may now be evolving into an ego thing. Barnes (and we believe Calipari) is like that one piece of a collection that you don’t have. Individually, that single piece is only worth x. But you are willing to overpay for that one piece because of its impact and the fit with your entire collection.

* As great of a fit that Rick Barnes is with the Wolfpack’s program, NC State now runs the risk of looking whorish in their pursuit of Barnes. Coach Calipari is reportedly not seeking nearly as large of a financial commitment from NC State, and it seems that Calipari may be more genuinely interested in saying yes than Barnes. Why not save $750,000 (in the event that we need it for football one day) and get the coach that has been more successful on the court (Calipari)?

John Brady

* Based on digging from the NC State side, we feel more comfortable about our hypothesis that the John Brady talk today has little merit.

* Based on this article from Baton Rouge, it looks like there is no reason to fear a Brady hiring from the LSU side. We hope that Coach Brady found a way to get his raise wrapped up quickly.

A phone call has not come from North Carolina State, nor its athletic director, Lee Fowler.

Brady said he was aware of his name being linked to the N.C. State opening Thursday by ESPN.com’s Andy Katz, but said there was no substance to the report.

* We are starting to think that some people close to the search just like throwing out some names to send fans on wild goose chases.

* If Lee Fowler pulls off a Calipari hiring, he (and team) will deserve significant credit for the results of the process. We can’t wait to be the first to congratulate him/them!

No matter who it is…it needs to be soon. Like this weekend. I know it can take a while to get the right recruits, but I hate to keep losing them. The 2006 class has to come or sit out a year, but that 2007 class we’ll need. Not to mention someone has to keep Ced focused on staying here one more year and not going pro just yet. That would be Lee’s job at this point….but for all of our loved one’s sake who don’t understand our passion….WE NEED A COACH NOW so we can get back to our loved ones.

  2. Tau837 04/08/2006 at 1:24 AM #

No one is going anywhere until the new coach is hired… including Ced. And it is more important to take whatever time is needed to hire the right coach than it is to worry about any current or recruited player. I’m hoping for Calipari, in which case I don’t see any of our current or recruited players going elsewhere.

  3. Wolf-in Around 04/08/2006 at 1:31 AM #

I watched both National Championships…’74 when I was 12 years old and then as a Jr. at NC State in ’83…I have been going to games since I was 3 years old…both Football and Basketball. I was born and raised in Raleigh, Grad. ’84 from NC State and nobody has been more loyal than I have as a WolfPack Fan and supporter.

Sendek is a good and smart man but he was on the other end of the Jimmy V Passion scale and after he did some thinking he really did all of us a hugh favor by going to ASU…it would have taken another 5 years to do something about Sendek. We have major problems with cutting our cords with soft coaches…O’Cain comes to mind, Monty K., and good ole loveable Les Robinson. We have made major progress in our facilities and from where we started…so what’s wrong with wanting more? We do have the Hurricanes but let’s face it…this is College Sports country and we do enjoy our bragging rights…some more than others…here of late. Yes, I have not been happy with Sendek and Chuck…not a hate but a deep down feeling we can and should do better…Lou Holtz and Jimmy V both had the passion while coaching at NC State. It is time to get Barnes or Calipari and I must tell you the last time I had a Great feeling about a new coach it was Jimmy V and I have this same feeling about Coach Cal. In addition, we need to cut the cord with Chuck and get Bill Cowher to coach State when he retires and moves into that big home in NW Raleigh.

GO PACK and Thank GOD for our Fantastic NC State WolfPack Fans!

Wow….it’s been a couple of crazy days, hasn’t it. I’ve had faith in everything from Barnes to Brady, but my first pick in the very beginning, and the person I really wanted was Coach Cal. I don’t know if it’ll happen, but if it does, GO PACK!

  5. J-wolf 04/08/2006 at 3:01 AM #

Also, if Lee pulls this off, my kudos to him as well as a big blaararaagg! for the suspense this week has given. I mean, dang, I’ve *tried* to get some work done, but it just hasn’t happened with me pushing the refresh button on this dang SFN website.

Please please please let the news about Calipari be true. This guy is perfect for us. All of this “baggage” nonsense is just baseless innuendo. Kudos to SFN for exposing the TRUTH about John Calipari.

John Calipari should have been our #1 from the beginning IMO. Barnes was a longshot since his situation at Texas is so great, but Calipari would be taking a big step up going from Memphis, trapped in the middle of C-USA, right into the heart of the ACC. Remember, this is a guy who LOVES the spotlight, and being right next to UNC and Duke with the opportunity to go head to head with them and knock them off is just the sort of challenge he would relish.

Plus, his parents live in Charlotte and he lettered at UNC-W for two years, so he has ties to the area. I really think if he came he’d stay for good. He’s tried the NBA thing and it didn’t work out, he is tailor made for the college ranks. There would be no need to jump to another school either, he is fully capable of turning NC State into a Duke/UNC type program, and I’m sure he knows that.

Getting John Calipari would be absolutely HUGE, one of those truly epic moves that completely changes everything. I am so excited if this is true. Oh man, please let this happen!

    Got two thoughts this AM.
    1. I’m saving Gregg Doyle’s hatchet piece so that I can email it back to him after every win next season. I suggest that others join me. I love the thought of him having a few thousand messages to delete after every Wolfpack ‘W’.

    2. I think a great way for the new coach to show us that we’ve made the right hire is to make his statement at the first press conference brief. Something along the lines of……

“We’re the Red and White from State and we know we are the best, hands behind our backs we can take on all the rest. Go to hell Carolina, Devils and Deacs stand in line, the Red and White from NC State.”

  8. BJD95 04/08/2006 at 8:30 AM #

Another great post from Jason – I agree yet again. Would be great if he were announced today, although I don’t get the feeling we’re that close to the finish line. I am glad I went to bed before this was posted, so I didn’t toss and turn all night again. I’ll try to stay calm – SERENITY NOW!

  9. beowolf 04/08/2006 at 8:37 AM #

I agree; great post Jason. Barnes was my top choice, but Calipari is a close second. I think Calipari might have greater success at NC State.

  10. 98st8 04/08/2006 at 8:47 AM #

Agree with Westcoast. I think the wife thinks I found a girlfriend with all this computer time. Oh and I hope I still have a job on Monday. Please hire Cal or Barnes soon.

  11. Tired in Florida 04/08/2006 at 8:55 AM #

You’re right down the center Jason. Next to Nate McMillian Calipari is the next most logical fit IMHO. His style of play is exactly what we need and (this is most important) he would relish the thought of going head to head with Roy and K. The entertainment value of Triangle BBB would soar. I say write the check and get him to Raleigh.

  12. Cardiac95 04/08/2006 at 9:19 AM #

I can only hope that we go after Calipari with the same balls out approach we used with Barnes.

  13. class of 74 04/08/2006 at 9:36 AM #

If Calipari does come on board it will really be great to laugh at the national media experts that have pooh poohed our efforts in upgrading this program.
Guys like Doyell, Vitale, Bilas will have alot of egg to remove from their faces and I’ll just love watching them backpedal.

I see and hear more upbeat ethusiasm regarding this program than I’ve seen in 10 years. And by god it’s about time.

    I concur.

Calipari has been a great fit. The media strikes again – bringing up dirt to try and trash our (the public’s) opinion of him. He was a winner at a small school, putting UMass on the map. Where is UMass now? He has revived a Memphis program that had struggled. He left UMass for the green of the NBA, and quickly realized he was not cut out for the pros. It’s not that his coaching ability was bad – but his style is more suited to college players, not the prima donna millionaires of the NBA. As much as I admire Coach K, I never wanted to see him go to the NBA for the same reasons.

Coach Cal can take these kids and make them dream, just like V. Cal WILL be successful at NC State, and WILL give Roy and K and run for their money. Will he win every game? No. Will he lose some that maybe we should have won? Sure thing. However, Cal will give us what we want, a chance to be competitive, a chance to go to the tournament and fill out our brackets past the first week. A chance for banners in the RBC.

Grad rates at Memphis are now supposedly at 80%. Before Cal got there, 0%. As for his past, SFN has shown his past has been butchered. His reputation may be a little sneaky, but we can show the media they were wrong. Reminds me of the old Andy Griffith episode, where the young man is accused of stealing, and his reputation would convict him. When something else is stolen, all signs point to the young man. Andy believed in the man, and knew there was more to the story. Sure enough, once the truth was discovered, the man was innocent. Cal will be a good fit. Yes, he was at UMass with the Camby incident, but he was cleared of any wrong doing.

We will be criticized if we hire Cal. I say bring it on! Let his record speak for itself once he gets here.

I think that was 1 of the biggest knocks on Sendek…he never really showed the emotional side, never showed the fever of wanting to beat K or Roy…Give us someone with passion of winning….and a pissed off attitude if we lose. I think Cal is our guy….i can just feel it.

  18. JimmyVguy 04/08/2006 at 10:36 AM #

Herb was a good coach, he just didn’t understand the game of basketball. He recruited some of the top talent in the country and coached those guys like they’d never been coached before, but that was the problem. He overcoached. Guys with that type of talent need to have the freedom to use their instincts on the court. The offense ran by Herb was too structured and required too much thinking. The guys were constantly trying to run the offense, but would have to think to much before making a pass or taking a shot. The thinking on the court led to mistakes and difficult seasons for some very talented players.

BJD: “Another great post from Jason – I agree yet again.”

I’m actually a medium, and right now I’m channeling Valvano and Case. That’s why at the moment I’m so right on. Thanks to everyone for the kind words about my posts.

Class of ’74: “If Calipari does come on board it will really be great to laugh at the national media experts that have pooh poohed our efforts in upgrading this program.
Guys like Doyell, Vitale, Bilas will have alot of egg to remove from their faces and I’ll just love watching them backpedal.”

You are correct overall, but I want to remove at least Bilas from this list. Early in the week, when we were really putting the heat on Barnes, he said that he didn’t think Barnes would come, but that we’d have a good chance with Calipari. Gotta give the man credit for that.

For the first 24 hours or so after Sendek left I was not sold on Calipari, because I was hesitant given his reputation. Then I did some research and I’ve been gung ho ever since.

This guy should have been our #1 ahead of Barnes IMO. I’m not slighting Barnes, but I don’t see his upside at NC State being as high as Calipari, who like I said could bring the program to a Duke/UNC level. Barnes is doing great at Texas, but Calipari did pretty much just as well at Memphis and UMass, two much tougher places to win. Barnes at Clemson is a more realistic comparison between the two, and Calipari wins that.

Anyway, missing out on Barnes may turn out to have been a blessing in disguise if we land John Calipari. Oh my God, you have no idea how much I want this to work out.

  20. class of 74 04/08/2006 at 10:59 AM #

^Bilas also said we are not on the same level as our neighbors and history says we should not expect to be. There his words are way off and the reason I include him with Doyell.

What is Bilas talking about? did he come to Duke because he would be playing for a National Power? or did he come to Duke to be a role player at a school that had several “winning” seasons. Evidently the definition of “success” these days is equivalent to National Championships and Duke’s have been recent, and that doesn’t equate to “tradition”
