850 The Buzz on Phil Ford

I’d like to thank 850 The Buzz’s Blog for appropriately addressing the “Phil Ford” situation in this blog entry. SFN may run a little more clarity on this in the future; but for now the good people at The Buzz have appropriately addressed the situation and there isn’t much need for more commentary on the “idea” that basically got started by bad reporting.

What sucks for NC State is that the national media didn’t know the difference in the legitimacy of the story and not. ESPN Radio ran national SportsCenter updates all day on Friday “reporting” that “New York Knicks Assistant Coach Phil Ford has withdrawn his name from consideration for the NC State job.”

I was in the car all day and it was driving me nuts. Of course, nobody from NC State ever thought about taking control of the media cycle by issuing a statement rebuking the nonsense in the middle of the week – just like we should have done with Steve Lavin on the night that Mike DeCourcy reported that we had offered our job to Lavin. In the absence of the truth, the media will go with whatever other people give them. In the process, NC State is made to look worse and worse and worse.

If you are one of the millions of people in the country that were listening to ESPN Radio in your car on Friday, you now think that Phil Ford was genuinely a candidate at NC State and chose to take his name out of consideration. It’s so sad.

To show that we have a sense of humor about the general topic (not the way that NC State didn’t deal with it), the following was emailed to me from a friend on Friday. It’s pretty funny.

It seems the joke (or nightmare) is never going to end. Now we hear they are talking to Sean Miller? He’s a Sendek guy…not an avenue to unite WPN! Why won’t they talk to Gregg Marshall or Whitt? Doesn’t make sense to me. I guess I’ll endure another week of beat downs from the Dookies and Tarholes at work. Ugh.

This happens when information remains in a vacuum and the AD is not effectively in charge of the process.

I agree, why are we not talking to Marshall??? Or maybe we have and he isnt interested? Who knows who we have contacted so far. This is getting very frustrating!!!

SFN – we are not talking to these types of names because Lee Fowler is still completely committed to landing a “name” with recognition. If Steve Lavin is any indication on what Lee Fowler thinks is a name…then God bless us all.

Someone at State admin needs to step forward and take over this process. While on the surface it shouldn’t be a big deal about the crap that we hear on ESPN, the problem is we have taken a PR beating due to obvious incompetence of the AD’s office. Unfortunately the result of this weekly stream of BS is that, even if not true, it gains credibility every week. We have to recruit in an increasing difficult environment as it is with new UNC system requirements, the success of our neighbors, etc., and someone has to step up, pre-empt the media’s reporting with accurate info (and /or spin), and complete this process quickly.

No matter how this came about it was handled poorly and makes us look like a joke in the national media. Phil is a good guy but even Coach Smith could not get Matt or Roy to put him on staff. And it is well known why they would not. Now it looks like we considered him for our head coach. This so called search gets worse everyday. Mike Brey was going to be fired this year if they did not make the NIT and now it looks like we are interested in him. When will the insaninty stop!!!

Phil Ford may be a good head coach candidate but I don’t think he is the right fit for us. Neither is Larry Brown, Matt, even Roy Williams (great coach but not the right fit for NCSU – and I hope he has not been contacted – there are other considerations at work here). As to the lenght of time required for the coaching search – seems to me (with NO inside information) that the length of time for the search and the considerable negative pub should be laid directly at Fowler’s feet. Not that I have any inside info but the PR handling is awful!

I’m afraid we’ve become the laughing stock og college b-ball not b/c of the “lunatic fringe” that Lee fowler would like to blame, but his failure to be responsive to the fans for years & now the PR nightmare he’s created when he finally had to do his job & hire somebody. Why in the hell won’t he consider Gregg Marshall, but will talk to Brey when, if this site is any indication, would definitely prefer the former? IMO, the Wolfpack Club needs to try to force LF out the door ASAP!

I’ve nothing against a Sendek guy, and my mom was a die-hard UNC fan before my father showed her the light and now she hates the ‘Holes, so I don’t see why Phil Ford should be automatically dismissed either.

I just want someone who will bring us wins. I never, never wanted to face another year without a NCAA bid. I was raised by a man who attended State during the ’74 season, and I was just as rabid a fan during the Les Robinson era as I am now. I just want somebody who has a passion for our school and our sport, not for himself (as some of the scarier names have), to come in and get the job done. I don’t care if you’re a Sendek prodigy or a product of the UNC system. If you love us and show us you love us…I’ll love you right back.

But that’s just my take, and it may very well be the length of the search weighing on me.

Throughout this coaching search, State’s PR machine has performed with all the grace of a three legged elephant in leg irons having an epileptic seizure. The unnecessary embarassment is what really pisses me off.

But look on the bright side – Duke’s PR machine is even worse.

I’d take Gregg Marshall, Haith, or Whitt any day of the week over Sean Miller or Mike Brey. Mike Brey? WHY!

  11. bl 04/30/2006 at 4:06 PM #

    From the N&O:

“Make of it what you wish, but a telephone operator said there was a Mike Brey registered for a while Saturday at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham. Brey, a former Duke assistant coach and current coach at Notre Dame, has been mentioned as a candidate for the Wolfpack. Efforts to reach Brey were not successful. By 7 p.m. Saturday, a telephone operator said Brey had checked out.”

Why are we (if we are) even talking to him??? I hope he’s just here for the hockey.
We need to be talking to Marshall.
Meanwhile….Herb and the rest of the nation continue to laugh as Chuck sounds a sigh of relief since we will never fire him now- we couldn’t stand to go through this again!!!

Let’s be cool and wait for an annoucement. Sooner or later, it will come. Whether LF is backtracking on someone that has previously turned us down, trying to get another big name, or finding just the right up and coming younger coach, lets be patient until we get a coach. Our bashing just makes us and the entire fan base, look foolish. I could understand if we were bashing the light blue school, but everything I read is a bash on our program, our AD, one of our biggest contributors, or our future coach (that none of us know who it will be yet).
Let’s try being positive and put some faith in our system, our AD, Mr. Murphy, and whoever else helps make the big decision.
I am behind them 100% and will only bash after their choice is made, and after the coach has proven he was the wrong choice. I will support our new coach 100% until proven otherwise.
Go NCSU, let’s get a new great coach!!

Mike Brey was just another false rumor. From PP:

Notre Dame, Ind. – “While I am not one to react to internet rumors, I want to make it clear that I did not interview for the North Carolina State job and I am not a candidate for the North Carolina State job. I am the coach at Notre Dame and honored to be it.” — Head Coach Mike Brey

  14. Woof Wolf 04/30/2006 at 6:33 PM #

    “I am behind them 100%…”

More of us would be behind them, if it just appeared that they had any effing idea of where they are going.

  15. vtpackfan 04/30/2006 at 7:18 PM #

I hope this means Murphy is way out of the loop, because if he does have an honest idea of whats going on, and he threw Fords name in, then we are in big time trouble. I thought Miller would have been interviewed a long time ago (possibly even when Sendek informed LF of his interests elsewhere). It all goes back to consistency, and in this case that means by what LF had been saying all along. He supported Sendek, thought he was the best man for the job, even went as far as to call those who diametrically oppossed this idea “lunatics”. So what happens when Sendek leaves, he starts going after all the names that the “lunatics” wanted to see on the bench for the past five years. He could have had Miller lined up the days following Barn(es) collaspe, and the bad Calamari incident. The Herb haters would have objected, but wouldn’t this have been consistent with the LF we have gotten to know and love?

folks have been calling Fowler “Uncle Jed” for a while. Isn’t this more like a Jethro thing now? Why the heck folks didn’t squash this Phil Ford thing is beyond me. You gotta be freaking kidding me, right? And has Wendell Murphy eaten some spoiled pork? Phil Ford? Wendell, come on, fella!

Phil Ford? Maybe his wife needs a date.

Phil Ford? Let’s skip the middleman and just hire his wife as a recruiter.

    :p

Seriously, the five-year head coaching requirement eliminates Ford, Miller. As the degree requirement eliminates other good candidates, Lowe, McMillan.

The new coach will need patience. Have y’all seen Roy’s recruiting class? And McRoberts will return to Duke.

anybody in the athletic department or wolfpack club that considered phil ford or anybody with ties to unc ought to be fired on sight.

thats our problem, we try to satisfy everybody else, make everybody else feel good.

we are scared to offend anybody.

you know what? screw them all. p&*^ them off and dont worry about anybody that doesnt have ties to nc state.

this is business. run it like a big business. quit screwing up and quit considering tarheels.

SFN – we don’t think that NC State was considering Phil Ford as much as Phil Ford’s name may have come up in some other kinds of conversations.

Can anyone verify the nasty rumor going around that Lee Fowler is on vacation for the next three weeks…in Fiji?
