So much for taking advantage of golden opportunities. State is out of the ACC Tournament DOMINATED by LAST PLACE Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament today.

There are plenty of tickets for sale in sections 110, 111, 212 and 213.

Those are the four sections designated for N.C. State fans. They won’t be needing them anymore after the Wolfpack got blasted by Wake Forest 82-71 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.

The 12th-seeded Deacs pounded a discombobulated State team inside with Eric Williams (20 points) and then watched as State missed a parade of 3-pointers (10 of 29). Wake led by as as 23 in the second half after building a 17-point first-half lead.

At one point a potential 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, State has lost four straight games and is looking squarely at a 9 or 10 seed. The Wolfpack (21-9) has imploded with poor shooting, poor shot selection and tentative defense.

Even with three seniors on the floor, State couldn’t muster a run at the suddenly revitalized Deacs, who held a 39 to 23 rebounding edge.

I apologize for laughing…but, I just think that it is HILARIOUS that the HSSS crowd has been criticizing Skip Prosser based on Wake’s struggling season (despite his high level of success BEFORE this season). With less tradition and less attractive resources, (“bad”) Prosser is now 8-5 vs (“good”) Sendek with a $166 million arena and all of the NC State’s resources. (Maybe those extra 50 miles away from Durham and Chapel Hill make that much of difference to those out-of-state kids that we all recruit?)

Please…please tell me more about how our players love playing and “fighting” for Coach Sendek. Please!

In ACC games through the first half of the Virginia Tech game on February 18th:

NCSU: 980 points (78.4 ppg)
Opponents: 896 points (71.7 ppg)
Avg. margin: +7 points

Since the second half of the Virginia Tech game on February 18th:

NCSU: 304 points (67.6 ppg)
Opponents: 366 points (81.3 ppg)
Avg. margin: -14 points

I swear to you that next year you will be told how Herb Sendek’s team’s historically “finish strong”

Well, Wake Forest is going farther than NC State in the ACC Tournament.

^ Oops, sorry about the reply to the deleted item.

Anyway, unless a miracle happens and this team makes some noise in the NCAA Tourney, this will be remembered as a historic collapse.

And speaking of the NCAAT, are we really sure the Pack is a lock?

This is just another disappointing N.C. State team. All of us who pull for the wolfpack have been here way too many times before. I sincerely hope that N.C. State does NOT make it to the NCAA tournament, they do not deserve the recognition. They get blown out by North Carolina AT RALEIGH, they lose to Boston College because they cannot get a shot off on multiple occasions, and they get blown out by last place Wake Forest twice in a row. Somebody please explain to me why they think this team is among the best college basketball teams in the country. If this team has any dignity, please refuse any bid to the NCAA tournament, and show some class. Herb, do you really think that you deserve a bid to a CHAMPIONSHIP tournament. I am a loyal supporter and alumni, this is getting past the point of embarrassing, I am worried about the poor boys playing on this team. The psychiatrists bills from this experience will bankrupt them.

There is something seriously wrong with this team. They came out and played hard for the first 5 minutes or so, then just laid down and died. Imagine where we would have been in these last 2 games without Gavin Grant (who played his ass off again today, with almost no help). For the most part, Gavin and Cam might as well have been the only players we put on the court this afternoon.

I did win a bet with a Wake fan at work. We bet lunch – I took Wake, he took State. He assured me that the tournament committee would take it into account that we “won the second half” today, against the 12th seed in a 12-team league.

An angry State fan declared on his way out of the bar where Cardiff Giant and I watched the game – “Don’t give up your Wolfpack Club membership, work for change!” He then led a rousing chant of “New coach! New coach!” Well, perhaps Michigan’s similar late swoon will mean no NCAA bid for the Wolverines, and no more job for Tommy Amaker. That’s the only job where I see a better than 50/50 shot of mutual interest between university and Sendek.

On the bright side – at least nobody got punched in the testicles today!

Hey, c’mon!! You guys heard Vitale, telling us how the administration had been right to not pull the trigger on Herb when the fans were screaming for a change…you don’t think he could be mistaken about this, do you? 😉

The sad part, the REALLY sad part, is that I am not surprised, and because of that I am not as upset as I might otherwise be. I feel like I should be steaming mad, not only about today’s results, but about HOW the team played, and HOW they were (not) coached. But truth be told, I expected this today and was therefore ready for it so there is little anger in me about it. There is little reason to remain angry about the same thing happening over and over, afterall.

These players appear to have quit on their coach, not that they can be particularly blamed for this all things considered. But its not as if this couldn’t be seen coming.

I expect more of the same next week. I hope I am wrong.

  6. Hunwolf 03/10/2006 at 7:56 PM #

What more is there to say? Is anyone honestly suprised?

Why we didn’t adjust to a zone defense is kind of beyond me…well actually it really isn’t know who’s at the helm. LOL! Otherwise, this team has completely packed it in for the season save for a couple of players. Atsur and IE were AWOL today. Grant played well again, and Cam played hard. The rest, including the coaching staff, should have stayed on the bus. Great job guys! Way to represent!

Wuf you won’t be wrong next week. We will be “one and done” as a #10 seed.

We stink, we suck, we are horrible. Now, replace “we” with “Sendek”, and reconjugate the verbs.

I am certain the Herb will be back as Fowler feels validated by comments like Vitale. I am demoralized because it will take a sub .500 season to rid State of Sendek and as long as we play such a weak OOC schedule that won’t happen.

Many bloggers have stated that we should aspire to be competitive with UNC and Duke on a yearly basis. I am now convinced that that is no longer possible. We, Virginia, GT are middle of the ACC and not going anywhere soon.

Oh well, I guess I will just go watch ESPN Classic. They replay the ’83 highlights every so often.

hey at least GT and UVA have two coaches that get fired up on the side line. My take is we could lose by 100 next weekend and Herbie will be right back in Raleigh next year. It is becoming more insane every year. My dad was trying to liken it to the Odom situation at Wake when he ran out of gas and just couldn’t win anymore. I told him at least Odom actually won two ACC titles and had great teams. Sendek has down none of this, just one fluke run last year. I will be shocked if no one transfers this offseason.

Well, at least I can say that I’ve been right about loser herb for the last 7 years.

Two rules to govern athletics at NCSU…if both the N&O AND Dick Vitale are telling you to keep Herb it must be the thing to do, right? After all both have nothing but love for NCSU in their hearts. I am with everyone else now…sorry but it is time for a change!

As a State graduate and fan my entire life, I’ve put up with a lot. Today was the first time EVER that I was embarrassed to be in public a State shirt and hat on.

Not that it will make a difference, especially since I’m a small donor, but I am seriously considering calling the Wolfpack Club on Monday and telling them that I am not giving them any more money until we have a new basketball coach. It’s getting to the point where it’s just plain ridiculous.

Herb’s game planning is awful, his in-game adjustments stink (when he actually makes them), his lineup rotations are jaw-droppingly dumb, and his lack of emotion carries over to the players. The guy is a follower, not a leader.

  12. TWolf 03/10/2006 at 10:25 PM #

I am with you. I am not sending anymore cash to the WP Club. What the heck are we paying for? I also am embarassed to be a State Fan. I told my kids today that they are now free to route for any team they wish, even Carolina. As a die hard Pack Fan and Grad (89), i would pull for Satan and a team of demons vs. UNC…but now, what is the point? Who cares? With Roy there and Herb here, we will never be on their level again!
Maybe State ought to transfer to Conference USA

Just wait till next week’s debacle to come. I only hope a significant number of WPC members will join together and tell this administration we have lost all confidence in them and this program. I have preached all they revere is our money and I see the withholding of our money as the only thing that will bring the changes that are past due!

Stat of note from this game.

Gavin Grant (5-7 from the free throw line).

The rest of the team(0-0 from the free throw line).

[…] Not to bring up very many bad memories, but this link will take you to the last time that State and Wake squared off against each other. Just remember that no matter how bad it feels this year – we are only in year one. There is plenty of time to improve upon the following performance (that doesn’t even include State’s ACC Tournament loss to the Deacs last year). […]
