The Oklahoman: “Folks on Tobacco Road speculate Sendek is part of OU’s coaching search”

The Oklahoman has mentioned Herb Sendek as a potential candidate for the OU Job. You have to register to read the story.

Coaching candidates

List of potential candidates to replace Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson:

Top choices

Tubby Smith (Kentucky): Yes, it’s a step down professionally. But Tubby said he enjoyed coaching at Tulsa and has always spoken fondly of Okies.

Mark Few (Gonzaga): Firmly entrenched up in Spokane, but with Adam Morrison headed to the NBA, perhaps Few is ready to take make a move.

Tom Crean (Marquette): As one of Sampson’s closest friends, he already knows plenty about the inner workings at OU, which would help with the transition.

Lorenzo Romar (Washington): Could the Sooners steal another hoops coach from the state of Washington? UW assistant Jim Shaw worked for Sampson.

Herb Sendek (North Carolina State): Some folks on Tobacco Road speculate Sendek – who has a sterling reputation with the NCAA – is part of OU’s coaching search.

This sounds like wild guessing by a journalist rather than any legitimate OU short list.

  2. NCBP 03/29/2006 at 6:05 PM #

would be great for Herb…probably not as much pressure at a big football powerhouse. I think it would be a smart move for him

    so your saying there’s a chance…

I would take a 1 in 100 shot at this point, frankly. Go, Herb, go!

ohhhhh to dream of a herb free day.

hey folks. It’s [email protected] His name is david boren. He’s the president of OU.

then theres [email protected] It’s Joe Castgilone. He’s their AD.

Everyone send them an email raving about the greatness of Herb.

I’ll take any grain of hope that someone can give. OU needs Herb, Herb needs OU, and most importantly, we need OU to need Herb to need OU.

  7. ThomYorkepack 03/29/2006 at 8:11 PM #

However, this does sound like journalistic speculation than anything based on solid information.

I’m not reaching for this poisoned lollipop anytime soon. I want to hear some more legitimate sources detail interviews, phone conversations, the like. It seems to me like we’re being told it’s raining while the piss is running down our backs.

That’d be an interesting twist given that Sampson rejected NC State’s overtures ten years ago & ultimately paved the way for Herb.

OU would be a good fit for Herb IMO. I’m not convinced that OU would find Herb a good fit for them. Have they been in any recent trouble with the NCAA?

Sorry kids, don’t get your hopes up. I’ve already started my campaign to alert The Sooner Nation to this growing threat:

Reposted because my autofill put “Soomer” instead of “Sooner”. Must be the anti-Herbies at work.

None of the guys mentioned, other than Herb, are strong candidates to make a move. As for Herb, I’m convinced NCSU will be his final bigtime Div. I job. Either he gets fired or retires here. Nobody is dumb enough to pay him what we do for the limited results he is likely to produce anywhere else.

WTF Sooner Pack? Everything is “we” in your post to the Sooners but apparently your pride still resides in OU.

I wouldn’t bet on OU. Sure would love to have Jim Larranaga as a potential. Any chance he’d join the “enemy”?

  16. RedNYellow 03/30/2006 at 7:44 AM #

That list means nothing. Mark Few turned down ~1.5 million to coach at IU. No way he is leaving for Oklahoma.

  17. BJD95 03/30/2006 at 9:22 AM #

My funny thought this morning would be for the coaching carousel to work like a 3-way trade – Sampson to IU, Sendek to OU, and David to NC State. Not my ideal scenario, but you would give every coach and fanbase a fresh start.

  18. Wuf62 03/30/2006 at 9:22 AM #

I think someone intentionally hints that Herb might be a candidate somewhere just to destroy the few who daydream of his leaving. OU is a pipedream, at best. Incidently, Herb interviewed for the job at Indiana. They couldn’t get together on the contract. Kelvin Sampson came along and got $1.5MM for promising to “graduate players, run a clean program, and WIN TITLES.” Herb was asking only $1.0MM, but the administration turned him down, saying “your resume is woefully short when it comes to the third objective.”

  19. Old13 03/30/2006 at 9:31 AM #

I suspect that this is more of the Fowler gimicks to make Sendek seem better than he is, especially in view of the upcoming contract extension (please, no!).

  20. Trout 03/30/2006 at 9:37 AM #

Is Wuf62 creating a scenario, or does he really know that Herb actually interviewed for the Indiana position? I’m thinking the former.

  21. BJD95 03/30/2006 at 9:43 AM #

I can’t imagine IU ever even talked to him. Although if they went all the way down the list to Sampson, they probably weren’t too far away from Sendek.

FWIW, I think the assistant was only promoted to INTERIM coach. OU still wants to go after a bigger name. At the end of the day, he’s likely “Plan B” – the only question is whether they go to Plan B before they get down to Sendek’s name on their list.

I’ve always thought Sendek would fit best at a pure football school, where consistent winning records and NCAA appearances would probably be enough.

  22. BJD95 03/30/2006 at 9:57 AM #

BTW, in my first post, I meant “Davis (as in Mike Davis)”, not “David.”

  23. Chief93 03/30/2006 at 10:11 AM #

Mike Davis would scare the hell out of me. On the plus side, everyone would get all those technicals they’re always clamboring for.

  24. scott 03/30/2006 at 11:10 AM #

I would give OU (well really most any major conference school other than NCSU) more credit than to believe they would be foolish enough to hire our Herb. But, like Gumbydammit, please God, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, pretty please!!

Another great interview with Tommy Burleson on WTSB 1090 here this morning. He was again going over the tired offense we are running and how it is boring and not conducive to attracting athletically talented players. Also he mentioned the coaching of players like Ced was not what it should be and Herb was not able to produce NBA calibre players with his style and coaching.
He was not malicious just honest and frank in his assessments of Herb and the situation. Finallly he touched on his thoughts regarding the number of wolfpackers who back his thoughts versus the opposition. Tommy sees 85% of the WPC thinking like he does and 15% on the HSSS side.

In short he was brutally frank today on the radio.
