NC State to Play…Cal (again)

* NC State will make its 5th straight NCAA Tournament appearance this season against old foe – the Cal Bears. Cal knocked the 2003 version of NC State Basketball from the NCAA Tournament in overtime.

* NC State is seeded #10 and the Bears enter as the #7 seed. The two teams are in the “Atlanta Region” and will play in Dallas, TX. Dallas sessions will be played on Friday and Sunday.

* The winner will most likely match-up with the #2 seed, Texas Longhorns. We told you about this potential just a few hours ago – link here. You really should spend more time here.

* State avoids a match-up with UNC-W because the Seahawks secure a seed better than the Wolfpack. (Just wait until next year!!!)

* State has earned the following seeds in their “big” run of five straight NCAA Tournaments:
2002 – #7 seed
2003 – #9 seed
2004 – #3 seed
2005 – #10 seed
2006 – #10 seed

* Those of you that support Herb Sendek more than you support NC State, please tell us more about the “progress” and “improvement” that our program is achieving in your delusional minds?

* In an interesting twist of fate, both John Calipari’s Memphis Tigers and Rick Barnes’ Texas Longhorns will play in the Dallas pod. Both of these coaches rank exceptionally high on knowledgeable Wolfpackers target list for potential replacements of Herb Sendek if Coach Sendek were to find another job this season. It is nice the cheap ass Lee Fowler can save money on interviewing expenses this week.

…developing…

At least the WPC club can have some conversations with Barnes before we lose in Dallas

  2. Sub-dude 03/12/2006 at 6:14 PM #

Funny; I had us picked for yet another matchup in UConn’s bracket.

  3. site admin 03/12/2006 at 6:18 PM #

Great point, lumberpack. No excuses for not being able to talk to Rick now.

  4. lumberpack 03/12/2006 at 6:19 PM #

The ACC is so weak this year that we have not placed teams in all four brackets-this is probably the weakest the ACC has been in at least a decade.

  5. lumberpack 03/12/2006 at 6:20 PM #

Strike that, not ten years, I think the ACC is so weak this year the only comparable would go back to the late 70’s – 1979 I think – the year of Black Sunday.

I always liked the NIT brackets due to their committee’s sense of humor (would love to See Wake vs South Carolina this year)…

But, the NCAA has outdone the NIT this year…Cal, State’s heartbreaker, in the 1st Rd with a possible matchup vs State’s heartthrob, Rick Barnes, in the 2nd Rd…

This is too much…I am rethinking my plans to stay home next weekend…

I live in Houston, married to a Longhorn. My kids won’t even pull for State if we make it to round two. My marriage may not survive if we win.

  8. VaWolf82 03/12/2006 at 6:54 PM #

I would say that the weakest year for the ACC that I remember is 2000. That’s the year that UVa didn’t get in with a 9-7 record.

Here’s the excitment I have about the Pack right now. I live in Austin & went to grad school at Texas. You’d guess I’d be making plans to head to Dallas. Where will I be this weekend instead? In California.

^ Hey, man!!! Good to see you on here.

  11. WTNY 03/12/2006 at 7:02 PM #

The Nevada “Wolf Pack” is seeded higher than the real Wolfpack! Argh!

  12. WolfInVolCountry 03/12/2006 at 7:32 PM #

Fred, your marriage is safe and you can thank Herb. He will find a way to run his stilted, “don’t call it a Princeton-type” offense and we will suffer another early exit. After our stellar end-of-season and ACCT performance, we were over-seeded and probably should be in the play-in game. OK, call this whiney and poisonous, but I am so demoralized at our collapse and Sendek’s inability to understand and coach through it that I could puke. He has made it through another inconsequential year with just enough ammunition to make York and Murhpy beg him to return.

10-seed was too high and generous and Cal will make us pay.

  13. Tim 03/12/2006 at 7:34 PM #

When will Herb Sendek do the honorable thing and quit. Oh wait, I said honorable and Herb Sendek in the same sentence….my bad.

  14. sbas 03/12/2006 at 7:35 PM #

Rich Barnes ranks high on the list to replace Herb Sendek? He is the man to lead us to victories over Duke. When Duke went to Texas earlier this year, Rick Barnes’ team laid the wood to Duke. Wait! Duke crushed! Well, then Rick Barnes will lead State to that ACC tournament title. After all, his Texas team won thier conference title. Wait! Lower seeded Kansas beat Texas for the title! People at this site should just keep bashing Sendek. That is what they are good at.
Or better, bash A-rod. Everytime i watch him come to bat in the World Classic he fails to deliever. Wait! He got a hit to win the game over Japan. Oh, my.

I really must peruse this site more often. Y’all really think Rick Barnes or John Calipari would even think once about the job at State? Let’s see we have an AD committed to mediocrity, a facility that has no atmosphere (forget history!), and one of the biggest financial backers is Wendell Murphy (the original Boss Hogg?). I don’t know folks, maybe we just have to accept Stenkdek as the best we can hope for.

  16. ncsslim 03/12/2006 at 8:01 PM #

KH, you really think the RBC is a negative? I guess it’s a chicken and egg thing. Is it the building or the product? I tend to think it’s solidly the latter. Pls don’t fall for the “who would want to coach here” bullshit.

  17. Tim 03/12/2006 at 8:04 PM #

Keith wrote “Stenkdek”…hmmm. maybe we should start calling Herb “Stinkdick”.

Just read this great article by BobbyLee Swagger at

    http://www.swaggersays.com/

(Found it at PackPride). Admin, this blog topic is probably not the best place to post this, but it is the best I could do. Please move it if you wish.

He is very insightful regarding Herb’s situation. Take a look. I think you will enjoy it.

PS. He has an absolutely hillarious analogy for some Pack Fans who are wishing for Huggins as their next coach. Teaser is that it involves a hooker.

Then again, if the team can somehow pull this off and make the Sweet 16…we’ll never hear the end of it from Fowler and the Sendek diehards. “Herb beat Barnes!”

It’s a tough position for State fans who really want to see the team do well but also think its in the best interests of the program to find new leadership for the program.

I read Swagger’s stuff yesterday. I found it neither funny nor insightful.

He bailed on BTB two years ago before the miracle wins over State and Miami. He’s just doing the same with Herb this year….restating the obvious.

He’s written previous columns extolling the virtures of LF and DB and their support of Herb and Bunting….about how their were right and the “howler monkeys” were wrong. You ought to ask him if this column means that he is admitting that the howler monkeys were right all along.

  21. WolfInVolCountry 03/12/2006 at 9:43 PM #

I discount the howler monkey stuff, although I admit to being one. Also, his point about going after a non-big namer is not very well thought out seeing as that might get us another Herb.

But he is making the same about-face that Friedlander from Fayetteville has done. What is interesting is that the tide of fence-sitters and non-lunatic fringers appears to be turning. What I guage by his article is that more and more are coming to the realization that a change is needed. Many of those weren’t on the same page this time last year. Looks like they have learned to read.

I love this site. It’s nice to read something objective. Not the official propaganda that other sites put out.

The Herb lovers will be going crazy if their man somehow beats Rick and the Horns. I don’t think I could stomach it.

I love NC State, but for the good of the program, I wish Texas would beat State by 30 points.

All for the cause of getting rid of Herb and getting Rick Barnes to Raleigh.

Hey Lumberpack. I remember 1979 and I still don’t know why it’s called Black Sunday. I mean Carolina and Dook lost in back-to-back games to complete nobodies. I was doing some serious rejoicing! Still brings a smile to my face when I’m reminded of it. Thanks for a Bright Sunday memory.

I just loved this from the N&O’s ACC Now Blog:

    QUOTE OF THE TOURNAMENT

Has the rest of the ACC decoded the Prince-State offense? No way, says senior guard Cam Bennerman.

“That’s impossible. They may look at our tendencies and what we like to do the majority of the time, but you’re not going to figure out this offense. We still have guys on this team who ain’t figured it out yet.”

  25. class of '74 03/13/2006 at 6:07 AM #

^That was apparent from the last four games!
