Kelvin Sampson To Indiana

Shocker. Indiana is going to hire Kelvin Sampson. It is amazing that someone of Sampson’s stature “would want to coach” at Indiana, since they fired a coach who went to the NCAA Tournament this season, and had made a Final Four.

I guess we can be thankful that they didn’t hire John Calipari.

If we could get a new coach worth a damn that likes to hunt and fish like Few, I personally guarantee a perpetual invitation for him to tag along with me every weekend of the year. Deer, duck, rabbit, turkey, rockfish, largemouth, even treerats…. I’ve got connections down east for deep sea fishing and bear, too. We can compete as far as that goes… no doubt in my mind.

Its obvious that Sampson can coach up his team. He can get them to play with great foundamentals and position awareness. Defense, rebounding and they rarely ever get blown out clearly show this. His weakness has been recruiting, and he seemed to have to fill out the team with juco players. If he can pick up some blue chippers at IU, watch out. The straw that broke Davis’s was the backlash when he lost McRoberts to Duke, so Sampson has hit the Hoosier state like he was a politician.

I believe this was a good hire. Despite some of problems at OU, there’s no doubt Sampson can coach. A final Four, an elite eight and 11 NCAAs are nothing to sneeze at — he’s been there what, 12 yrs. It’s probably good IU breaks the Knight ties and hires a proven energizer.

Yes…Herb’s status in the coaching market certainly raises questions

Sampson was a good hire because he’s won four conference titles and made a final four all at Oklahoma. He’s managed the best winning percentage in the history of that school and he always has some tough non-conference games during the season. Sampson also manages to get really good guards to play for him, which is a perfect counter to Illinois and Ohio State, who have had some tremendous guards recently. Indiana will be a force very shortly in the Big Ten.

Regarding Few, I don’t think anyone in the country outside of Roy and K could be in a better position. He has only Washington to battle for recruits in the Northwest (and I personally think that Romar will be moving on very soon. Too good a recruiter to stay in the Pac-10s wasteland). Few has been at Gonzaga only 7 years but spent several as an assistant. He took over for Dan Monson in 1999 when Monson took the Minnesota job. Gonzaga is Few’s first head coaching position and I don’t think that even 5 million could lure him away from that place. Indiana, Duke or Carolina probably couldn’t pay enough to get him to give up the Zags.

    Romar is a UW grad

An addendum to Sampson’s recruiting: Hollis Price, Drew Lavender, Ryan Humphrey (transferred to Notre Dame), Ryan Minor, Eduardo Najera, Aaron McGhee, three of which are in the top-ten in all-time school scoring (also inherited Jeff Webster who is high on that list) and three All-americans. I don’t think recruiting is that big an issue with Sampson. Besides, it’s not like Indiana is going to consistently lose good players to Purdue or Indiana State. If they lose them, there losing to Illinois, Carolina, Duke, and Ohio State.

Did not know that. Thanks Charlottefan!

If Calipari said no to IU, then what makes anyone think he would be interested in our job?

As far as few, is he learning from Dan Monson’s experience? Isn’t he under a lot of pressure now?

^He is under NO pressure. They love him and fear that everytime a job comes open he may be a candidate. Few is not likely to go anywhere anytime soon.

74, I think O was talking about Monson, not Few.

Monson most definitely IS under a lot pressure at Minnesota.

    Minnesota loves Dan Monson?

    http://www.startribune.com/512/story/322308.html

“While Monson has been successful in improving the image of the program, the Gophers have reached the NCAA tournament only once in his seven seasons. College basketball, as Monson repeatedly has said, is “a bottom-line business.”

Attendence has dropped by about 3200 per game.

Sorry for not being clearer 74. I can see how my statement and questions could be misinterpreted.

^Sorry Mr. O I thought you were meaning Few not Monson. Few is happy as a clam whereas Monson is on his way out short of a miracle.

  15. ThomYorkepack 03/29/2006 at 9:23 AM #

Attendance is down 3,200 per game during Monson’s tenure? Wow. They must not have an LTR system there…

Bruce Pearl was interviewed last night at the UNC vs. UT womens game by Taylor Zarzour of local WTSB 1090. I honestly thought for a brief moment that Jimmy V. had returned. That guy is great on the radio and I can easily see why a kid would want to play for him. When the day arrives for us to hire a new coach his name should be at the top of the list and no price should be regarded as too much. He is impressive!

  17. ThomYorkepack 03/29/2006 at 12:36 PM #

^You think Pearl will still be coaching when he’s 87 years old? 🙂

  18. class of '74 03/29/2006 at 1:09 PM #

^God forbid we retain the coaches we now have for more than 2 additional years! And two more years would be my doomsday scenario for basketball.
