The record speaks for itself. As many of us have said all along, it’s a question of what is acceptable. For some, this record is good enough. There are others of us (like me), who aren’t satisfied. We want wins against quality teams; a better record against Wake, UNC and Duke. We don’t have to have a winning record against UNC and Duke, necessarily, but it has to better. And we have to feel like the potential to win an ACC championship, even a national championship, is there. And Herb will never do that for us.

I note that Barnes has been quoted as saying he’s not interested in the head coaching position at N.C. State.

^ Can you share that quote?

  3. Sam '92 03/20/2006 at 9:11 AM #

it’s from Fayatteville Online, very end of the article:

Does Sendek now hold the record for worst margin of defeat in an ACC tourney and NCAA tourney?

Add that to his noted accomplishments.

  5. RedNYellow 03/20/2006 at 9:17 AM #

Sendek indeed holds the NC State record for worst NCAA tourney loss since 1954 and prolly in history. I doubt that any team before 1954 beat us by more than 21. Especially before the shot clock and 3 point line were instituted.

  6. Jeff 03/20/2006 at 9:19 AM #

Oh…I thought that you had quote that I could believe. Sorry..but I don’t believe anything that comes after the following:

“I don’t think there’s a finer coach anywhere. I look at the job he’s done at N.C. State, I think it’s remarkable, really.”

That is code for…”everything that I am saying is bullshit.”

  7. GAWolf 03/20/2006 at 9:25 AM #

Why would Barnes ever make statements such as he did regarding Herb and the fans’ lost hope for him? I’m concerned that he truly isn’t at all interested in our head coaching position. Otherwise, wouldn’t he have just kept his trap shut? His statements about something that doesn’t yet concern him somewhat rubs me wrong.

  8. Jeff 03/20/2006 at 9:36 AM #

Honestly…I could care less about Rick Barnes. Especially on this entry. Would like to focus on our great performance and improvement.-

If this is improvement I hate to think what regression would be.

  10. Clarksa 03/20/2006 at 10:04 AM #

It looks like we improved from last year! Does this mean the new measuring stick will start from last year instead of year #6?

  11. Wolfpack Willie 03/20/2006 at 10:15 AM #

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, “Herb Sendek is a modest man, and he has much to be modest about.”

  12. Jeff 03/20/2006 at 10:20 AM #

Clarksa…next year we are due to not have a measuring stick at all. The HSSS Handbook that I stole last week indicates that next year’s (not) measuring stick is to focus on the great recruiting class that might be coming in. It worked in 2001 and it is time for that one to be recycled.

The real question is how long can this maddness go on? I think I know the answer and it’s until the money stops flowing into the WPC, but truly how long does it take? Another 5 years?

    Nitpick alert:

State was 3-5 vs the RPI Top-50 this year; which should be broken down in your table as follows:

    1-10 0-2
    1-25 1-5
    26-50 2-0

    Wins:
    BC (22)
    GW (37)
    UMD (49)

    Losses:
    Duke (1)
    Iowa (7)
    UNC (12) twice
    BC (22)

Also, I think that 51-100 should be 8-3 and not 9-3

  15. Clarksa 03/20/2006 at 10:57 AM #

I forgot about that chapter, especially since I burned my copy of the book.

  16. Jeff 03/20/2006 at 11:11 AM #

    VaWolf…

    * My chart was 11-25, not 1-25

    and

    * Cal was #52. Therefore giving us another win in the 51-100 world in the overall number.

    Does this impact your numbers?

  17. VaWolf82 03/20/2006 at 12:15 PM #

I didn’t include the NCAAT games so that explains the difference. (But your label does say 1-25…not 11-25.)

the interest in ncs bb is so great in wilmington nc that cbs affiliate did not carry tx game

  19. James 03/22/2006 at 7:40 PM #

These are very interesting statistics. Where can I find them for each of the ten years of Sendek’s tenure?

  20. VaWolf82 03/22/2006 at 8:54 PM #

Check out the links on the right side of the main page under “Absolute Best Stat Entries”. There are several different compilations of various categories there.

If you don’t find what you want there….try out the RPI archives at kenpom.com….they go back to 1999.
