Welcome to the ACC, Boston College

Poor Boston College. They really thought that they had a chance last night.

I didn’t watch the whole game with significant intensity. But, I did watch enough to know that Duke shot 37 free throws while Boston College shot 13 (on their home court).

What most people are talking about was the obvious missed call at the end of the game when Shelden Williams got NO ball on a block of a BC lay up…and got no foul called. (I did notice how Dookie V took the opportunity to jump on the no call so that he could justify in his mind that he is fair.)

Unfortunately, the only reason that this play is drawing attention was because of when it happened – at the end of game. As ACC fans, we all know that kind of officiating is par for the course throughout any game against Duke. But, I have to ask — why does it really matter WHEN the bad call happens? It is a shame that the bad call has to happen at the end of the game for it to draw attention. In a game of basketball – are 2 points somehow worth more in the 2nd half than the first minute of the game? Absolutely not.

I’m sure that BC Eagle will have some great comments today.

I only watched the first half. The thing I noticed in the first half was how much more intense Duke was at the end of the half. The intensity Coach K gets them to play with every minute of every game is what impresses me the most about his program. Then they have more talent than everyone else in the country too.

I am sorry I missed the no call and I totally agree on your comments about the timing of calls. Fouls are fouls no matter when they happen and they have to be called.

Agree. Welcome to the ACC, BC. 🙂

Duke blew all but one point of a 17 point 2nd half lead, and needed the officials to bail them out.

BC had the all star crowd at the game: Doug Flutie, Robert Kraft, Tim Russert.

One call was really interesting, and goes against the “tradition” rule of officiating in the ACC.

FRESHMAN Ron Paulus drove the lane and went to the hoop. SENIOR All American Craig Smith stepped in to take the charge. As biased as Dookie V is, he even said the call could have gone either way. PAULUS gets the call, Smith gets his 5th foul and is OUT of the game. I remember when a senior all american would get that call, not a freshman point guard.

BC coach Al Skinner also noticed something different about the ACC. He felt the officiating was lopsided. Duke shot 37 free throws. BC shot 13.

“We played well enough that I thought we would earn the respect of the officials,” he said. “It didn’t work out that way.”

Krzyzewski said the foul disparity reflected BC’s decision to shoot more 3-pointers while Duke fed it to Shelden Williams in the low post.

Damn, I quit watching when Duke kept its 15-17 point lead through a 5 minute stretch in the 2nd half. Didn’t see a comeback happening, especially after they laid down so nicely for us after we punched them in the face.

BTW, DUKE Edsell was the lead official for the game. Enough said.

Coach K is full of *&%$.

Duke shot 15 three pointers. There insider players had 15 2 pt. FG attempts and 23 free throws.

BC shot 16 three pointers. There inside players had 29 2 pt. FGs and only 13 free throws.

    ^ Well, technically 16 3-pointers is “more” than 15 3-pointers. 🙂

Good stats. Duke is the best team in the ACC, no doubt. But last night just lets you know that a comment Coach K made about 22 years ago about Dean Smith can now be said of himself: “there seems to be a double standard in the ACC, one that applies to UNC, and one that applies to all the other teams.”

Was Doug Flutie at the game? They never showed him on TV if he was.

Duke went up 61-43 with 12:49 to go in the 2nd half.

Duke made 3 FGs the rest of the way. They made 2 FTs at the 11:32 mark to make the lead 63-48. Their next score was a FG at the 6:32 mark to make it 65-57.

    4 points in 6 mins.

^Trout. It’s Greg Paulus not Ron the QB.

One of the more amusing articles I read was from Lennox Rawlings – who seemed to indicate that Duke doesn’t get any breaks from the officials. Of course, this is the insightful, gutsy stuff I’ve come to expect from this hack.
