Awards Rolling in for Mario

Mario Williams has been named a Sports Illustrated 2005 All-American and a Walter Camp All-American.

This is just the beginning of many awards for Super Mario, whom many are presuming may only have one more game in a Wolfpack uniform ahead of him.

What do you think? How will NC State’s defensive line look in the future?

Mario’s definitely gone, IMHO. I am quite worried about our 2006 defensive front.

Agree with you. Much will depend upon whether Ray Brooks returns from academic situation. As much as I’m critical of Chuckas a head coach I do think he will have a decent defense on the field next year.

I hope McCargo doesn’t leave as well. He’s a 2-4 rounder right now. Mario is gone, and it will be another recruiting gem that will be leaving State without winning a championship. We really blew it this season, when’s the next time FSU will have 3 conference losses.

I also concur. With Pressley and Tyler returning, the middle of our defensive line will still be solid. Losing the pressure of both Lawson and Williams will hurt our ability to pass rush AND our ability to play press coverage against wideouts from other teams. Losing these two might be more important than PR’s graduation two years ago!!!

I think we’ll have a decent pass rush from the end. Wright, Martin, and Willie Young are all pass-rushing types. I just worry how those guys will do against the run. Definitely need Brooks back. It wouldn’t surprise me to see us play Pressley and perhaps Brown at DE in certain situations.

Brooks may be back, but I’d be pleasantly surprised if that’s the case.

Does Wright = Littleton Wright? And if so, where did he fall off to this year?

Mario and Manny will be missed, as will McCargo if he leaves. We had the kind of defense the last 2 years that we’d hoping for the last 10 years. It really stinks that we’ve gone a combined 11-11 w/ it.

We’ve definitely missed an opportunity to do well with our lack of O the last two seasons. We hardly ever seem to get it all together lately. McCargo should stay and the DTs will be fine. Most of the secondary is back and starting LBs will be fine. I’m still more concerned about the QB than the D. We will miss our DEs. Mario finished with a bang. Imagine his numbers if he could have had that much impact over 11 games.

Wright redshirted, as did Young – smart move given that we already had 3 seniors at DE. He doesn’t get mentioned often but Moses had a pretty solid this year as well (although he drove me nuts w/ his tendency to line up offsides).

Really the defense will be fine maybe not as good as the past two years but all in all not bad as a unit. The o-side is a different matter, but if Brent Schaffer shows up on campus we may have a major problem solved.

brent schaffer is overated. Junior College football is just like high school. The guy burned you once don’t let it happen a second time!
