Boos Rain on Hurricanes in Miami

The crowd at the Orange Bowl started booing their #3 ranked Miami Hurricanes last night in the 3rd quarter of the Canes upset loss to Georgia Tech. The boos were so prominent that the ESPN television crew even made a comment akin to, “Listen to those boos” in the middle of the 4th quarter.

Unlike the editorial comments with which Mike Tirico criticized NC State fans with during the Wolfpack’s October loss to Clemson, the ESPN announcers chose not comment on the crowd’s booing. Evidently, ESPN’s commentators feel that NC State fans are unjustified in simply wanting a winning program while Miami fans don’t deserve criticism for curiously booing one of the nations best programs (and #3 ranked team in the country).

Obviously, a press release and public comment on the booing in the Orange Bowl is expected to come from Miami AD, Paul Dee at any moment. It will be interesting to compare Dee’s handling of the situation with other, similar situations.

This is irritating although I generally like Tirico. He always mentions the NC State connection with Tim Clark & Carl Petterson on golf broadcast. It should also be noted that boos rang down on the UNC-Chapel Hill team during their pathetic effort against Duke. Their fans also threw objects at Duke’s Ronnie Drummer after scoring a go ahead touchdown in the 4th quarter. Neither event made it into the write-ups of Robbi Pickeral, Ned Barnett, A. J. Carr & J. P. Giglio in the N&O.

If USC or Texas played like Miami did there would be boos in those places too! It is just human nature these days to voice one’s displeasure.

How about the UVA faithful in Charlottesville. They emptied the stands at half time as VT pounded the Hoos. I won’t boo a college team but I reserve the right to leave early when the outcome of the game is no longer in doubt (Carter Findley at the end of the 3rd quarter of the “Clempson” game). Our AD over reacted in publishing his post game message and I doubt you will see anything of the kind out of Miami.
