Williams on Sendek
After NC State swept Maryland a week and a half ago, Terps coach Gary Williams offered some complimentary words for NC State Head Coach, Herb Sendek.
“Herb Sendek prepares his teams as well as anybody we play against,” Williams said. “He does a great job. He should get a lot more credit for what he does than sometimes he gets. This is a tough area down here.”
The comments were nice.
The comments were also accurate — Sendek is as good of a preparer as exists in the ACC. He is probably the “smartest” coach in the ACC. He is probably very, very good a host of coaching-related skills.
Unfortunately, unless you are Lee Fowler , then you realize that coaches collect paychecks to DELIVER results ON THE COURT as opposed to simply having certain skills and earning random opinions from some selected individuals off the court and. Especially individuals like Gary Williams who holds:
* a 16-6 overall record vs Herb Sendek
* a 14-4 overall regular season record vs Herb Sendek
* a 7-2 record in Raleigh against Herb Sendek
* a 4-2 record in the RBC Center against Herb Sendek
I BET that Gary Williams thinks Sendek is as good of a coach that exists in the country!! I wonder what he thinks of the coaches that have better records against him?
I DON’T WANT GARY WILLIAMS loving my coach. Does Gary Williams run around publicly lauding Coach K or Roy Williams for their coaching ability? HELL NO. Why do you think that is?
Williams on Gillen
Today, Gary Williams joined Roy Williams in the chorus of coaches coming to the defense of another of their favorite whipping boys, Pete Gillen. Today, the High Point Enterprise shared an informative article:
“Maryland coach Gary Williams praised Gillen after the Terps fended off the Cavaliers for a 92-89 double-overtime win last weekend.
“That’s why Pete Gillen is a good coach,” Williams said. “I’ve seen his teams at Providence and Xavier, and that’s how they play. They never give up. We could have won regulation. We could have won the first overtime. But that’s what he puts into his players – that they’re not going to go away. I wasn’t surprised at all they came back (from deficits) in both those situations.”
As I blogged in a previous entry — Have you ever heard an opposing coach actually endorse firing one of their colleagues? If so, I’d love to hear about it.
I wish I were rich so that I could offer a reward to the first coach to say any of the following: (1) “Of course I think that Coach (X) is doing a great job. I am 18-2 against the guy and will own him forever. Please don’t fire him and hire anyone better. I’d hate to lose this guaranteed W on my schedule every year.”
(2) “No matter how nice of a guy the coach is, he gets paid seven-figures to shit or get off the pot. I love the guy, but I totally understand the frustration of the University’s supporters and feel sorry for all parties involved. ”
(3) “I really wish you guys would bring in Bobby Knight for a few years. I could use the competition.”
Just out of curiosity…how often did Dean Smith used to tell the world how good of a job that Coach K was doing? Gee, I wonder how that got by us?
