1st NC State Hall of Fame class announced

Yesterday, Athletic Director Debbie Yow announced the Inaugural Hall of Fame class for the NC State Hall of Fame. The inductees are:

I don’t have any real qualms with the first class. Obviously, some of the names were locks like Thompson, Case, Yow, and Brown. All inductees are deserving of being a part of this star studded initial class. It is an extremely solid class. The committee did an excellent job. Now, we hope the new College Football playoff committee will do as well.

Now that the first class is out, everyone will look forward to the second class. You should see names like Norm Sloan, Cullen Jones, Andrea Stinson, and Philip Rivers among others that will be the favorites to be enshrined.

The class will be celebrated at the 2012 NC State Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on Oct. 5 in Reynolds Coliseum.

You can purchase tickets for this historic evening here.

That fact that Jim valvano is being honored in the first class is long overdue. Good work by the selection committee to include him. I am blessed by the fact that Gena Beasley, Ted Brown, Jim Ritcher, David Thompson, Julie Shea and Kay Yow were all at State during my time there as a student. Those were the glory years. I hope the Lou Holtz will also be honored in the Hall of Fame as one our great coaches at some point. I’m sure we can all think of many other great State athletes that deserve recognition. This first class is the cream of the crop.

How about Earl Edwards next round?

I’ll repeat my coments from the forum thread about this:

While there are obviously many more names that could have been included in this class, I think it is very representative of NCSU athletics. Going back farther in Wolfpack history would probably find one or two, or even a few, more deserving than some on the list. BUT I think it is good that the first inductees all be people who are readily recognizable to all of the fan base and the general public. The committee did a great job IMO!

As a student, I cheered for Genia Beasley, Ted Brown, Jim Ritcher, Julie Shea, Kay Yow & Jimmy V! Those were great times! What a class group! I watched David Thompson in high school, and watched Roman Gabriel as a kid. Too young to see Everett Case – and have only recently begun to appreciate soccer — too bad I missed Tab.

Three decades later more glory years are finally coming back!
