Butch Davis Fired (Confirmed!!!) Did 216 phone calls nail the coffin shut?
LRM asks: Uh…considering the timing of this (if true), then what on earth changed? To think, if this had been done last summer, the whole thing would’ve largely been forgotton (especially with the issues at Ohio State, Auburn and now Oregon). But now there will undoubtedly be penalties of some sort, and I have to think firing the Chief right now must be part of some attempt by the Flagship for the NCAA to accept lesser, self-imposed penalties.

GAWolf asks: Given that the timing is so curious (read: could not be worse for the Heels), could it be that Butch misled the powers that be in Chapel Hill regarding his personal phone “last fall” when Greg Barnes alleges the phone records were reviewed (snicker) by UNC. One can’t help but think that it would be an easy pitch unless someone started putting random phone numbers with names. It’s interesting that on the eve of the release and after Butch allegedly put time into “redacting” these records the school pulls the cord on Butch before the phone records are released.

IF this is true, I wonder if the Buckeyes’ seemingly getting off easy after offering Tressel’s head on a platter turned the tables on Butch. But I can’t confirm anything. I’m asking everyone who might know.

UNC has really BUNGLED this entire thing about as bad as possible. Remember when Ohio State called UNC after they got contacted by NCAA?? That was probably to find out what exactly UNC did so OSU could do the EXACT opposite. Stupidity running rampant over there.
Timing is perfect. Wait until media days are over, but before fall camp begins. The tOSU announcement last week certainly played into this … “look NCAA, we’ve gotten rid of both rogue coaches, please don’t hammer us too hard.” Men of integrity? … hardly.
Maybe because the press is not falling in lock step like they were supposed to do but actually asked some questions?

If true they finally got wise and listened to the Chansky wing of the politburo. That and the “role reversal” story probably drove them off the cliff. One thing about it, the holier than thou, Carolina Way, attitude is forever trashed. So now do they put Blake’s guy in as acting head coach? That would be rich.

The new BOT could be the issue, but it could also be something new. It would have to be one or the other. Certainly they wouldn’t just up and do this today as opposed to any other day over the last year and some change.
It will be absolutely interesting to see if he gets a buyout like Blake. If so, one would think it’s to shut him up.

Some past UNC Basketball players who have been promoted by UNC as having been in AAS: Carter, Wallace, Stackhouse, Cota, Lynch, Phelps, Rozier, D. Williams, McInnis, etc….
The adults may be taking back over at the “Flagship”. Timing appears to imply that academic reputation has now suddenly become re-important with new BOT members and that Winston and other BD supporters on old BOT were the main reason he survived this long.
It makes a statement that they would do this now – stupid timing as it relates to football program but smart as it relates taking steps toward regaining its reputation.
Or I may be giving too much credit to BOT – it could just be that new info was about to blow this wide open….
How about the fact that Pittman likely becomes the interim coach… and he’s the only guy on staff other than Blake that has been at times specifically named from some sources as having possible knowledge of whatever nefarious was going on over there.
