Awful Pack Handed Awful Loss

The ending was a perfect microcosm of the Keystone Kops effort by NC State. Wake was stopped dead to rights on 3rd and 6, but 2 (maybe 3) embarrassingly bad missed tackles later, and it’s first down Deacs. 30-24 is your final, and the game was not as close as the score would indicate.

Without question, this was the worst game (relative to personnel) of the Tom O’Brien era. The players and the coaching staff have alot to answer for after this one. Completely, absolutely, unequivocably inexcusable.

Someone else can cover the post-game quotes. I’m in no mood to hear a word of it.

    5-7 this year

^scratch that. it was not mediocrity. it was suck.

Poor job by the coaching staff, play calling was horrible, and most disappointing is that we have not improved on what killed us last week, untimely penalities (discipline) and tackling. I’ve supported TOB so far, but he has a lot to answer for here as to why we aren’t getting better. I’m sorry, but “I don’t know” does not suffice.

Here we go. Basketball season all over again. Someone realizes, “Hey, State’s guards can’t stop the drive – our guards can get to the basket any time they want.” Result – record performances by guards.
The equivalent in football will be, “Hey, they have no secondary. There are guys standing in the backfield wearing uniforms, but they are just spectators who may, or may not, bother tackling us.” Result – record performances by QBs.

Grobe & Skinner are good, but not that good. Penalties, missed catches, interceptions, missed tackles, penalties, penalties, penalties.

That was a slow death waiting to happen.

I wonder if Russell Wilson wasn’t on this team, would they be like Duke?

  7. wolfpackattack89 10/03/2009 at 7:01 PM #

    Pass defense = Atrocious
    Tackling = Awful
Aspirations of a Special Season = Over

  8. TheAliasTroll 10/03/2009 at 7:03 PM #

let’s not over react too much BJD.. the Pack played their hearts out. Yeah we missed some tackles, but lets not blame the loss on that… you could give credit where credit is due and that is to Wake Forest and their coaching staff and the game plan they put together to play against us. TOB said himself the WF coaching staff was one of the best he’d contend against this season. That’s saying a lot. We lost by 6. Chill out.

  9. ncsufan13 10/03/2009 at 7:04 PM #

The game was a total failure by the coaching staff. Its as if they didn’t game plan at all. Everything that looked bad last week looked far worse this week.

Duke looks a lot scarier all of a sudden.

I’m not finished. We are not Florida. We are not Oklahoma. We are not Alabama. We are a 3-2 football team. We won a total of 3 games that last year under our last head coach. We lost by 6 on the road to a very good Wake Forest team. Relax. This kind of post, IMO, is a part of the cumulative effect that runs coaches out of Raleigh.

  11. BJD95 10/03/2009 at 7:08 PM #

I don’t think so. I didn’t see 60 minutes of effort. I certainly didn’t see more than 60 seconds of intelligent effort.

There’s just no excuse from making so many stupid mistakes last week, getting bailed out late, then playing even worse and stupider the following week. Because we play so many home games, we may get to 7-5 and bowl eligibility. But any aspirations for something really solid to build on are kaput. Fini. Whatever other foreign language sound bites one could offer.

  12. McPete 10/03/2009 at 7:08 PM #

“Yeah we missed some tackles, but lets not blame the loss on that… ”

it’s a fundamental aspect of the game, and this team fails miserably at it.

  13. BJD95 10/03/2009 at 7:09 PM #

Wake Forest is NOT a good football team. Let alone “very good.” They would go 2-6 in a real conference.

  14. TheAliasTroll 10/03/2009 at 7:10 PM #

yeah Riley Skinner torched us. He scorches a lot of teams. Big F’ing deal. I say relax. We’re 0-1 in conference play. F’ing relax. If we suck *** against Duke then start being a chicken little.

  15. GApack04 10/03/2009 at 7:12 PM #

Totally agree with BJD95 on this. The effort from the players and staff is NOT there. TOB cannot accomplish anything “Special” with these players. They are the opposite of everything he ever had at BC. The staff is unable to figure out how to be creative or coach well enough to win with these guys. In addition, whoever thought this could be a special season is smoking something. State is at best 2 or 3 seasons away from competing for an ACC title.

Aspirations of a Special Season = Over

No one that watched State’s defense last year should have had those.

  17. Dogbreath 10/03/2009 at 7:13 PM #

The only solace to be found is that we aren’t as bad as UNC. We may win that game and 2 or 3 others.

  18. wolfpackattack89 10/03/2009 at 7:15 PM #

I agree with BJD. We made Riley Skinner look like a Heisman candidate.

  19. cWOhLFrPAiCKs 10/03/2009 at 7:16 PM #

Wow. What an extreme overreaction to a good team beating us in there own house by six. We still had a shot to win in the end. We’re still a good football team and we do need to get better. Things will come, just give it time.

  20. McPete 10/03/2009 at 7:17 PM #

    AliasTroll,
we could have, and should have, beaten Wake Forest. WF could not run the ball at all. they turned the ball over 3 times. they were completely one dimensional on offense and our secondary got burned down after down. and then there was the tackling problem. the same problem this team has had ALL YEAR, not just against wake forest.

this is one of those games that BC fans never forgave TOB for. a complete head scratcher.

  21. TheAliasTroll 10/03/2009 at 7:18 PM #

I disagree BJD95, I think Wake Forest is a very good football team. I think they have been for several years now. We will just have to agree to disagree.

I really just hate the connotation I’m getting from this post. It’s an “I give up” kind of post. For F’s sake… this website is the go-to website for A LOT of people for finding out info about NC State outside the media. The GO-TO site. In my opinion it makes us look ridiculous to claim it was an awful loss. It wasn’t. Start being objective instead of subjective.

I don’t post often, but I certainly felt the need to disagree with this post as a devout NC State fan.

  22. McPete 10/03/2009 at 7:22 PM #

wake forest is not a good team. period.

  23. McPete 10/03/2009 at 7:23 PM #

    aliastroll,
if you are looking for someone to blow sunshine up someone’s a$$, you came to the wrong site. people tell it like it is here.

  24. TheAliasTroll 10/03/2009 at 7:23 PM #

“wake forest is not a good team. period.”

As I said, we’ll have to agree to disagree.

That makes NC State and Pitt both less than good teams. That is an asinine statement at best.

Yeah it sucks real bad we lost. We had opportunities to win it and they didn’t come to fruition. That sucks… but we aren’t a bad team. Nothing you can say will ever convince me of that.

edit: Not looking for anything blown up my ass. Let’s try to keep it relatively classy and civil after a loss shall we? We lost by 6 on the road to a very well coached team. That’s all I’m trying to say. No need for personal attacks.

Really though, regarding the personal attacks, it doesn’t matter to me. As a conservative I don’t get offended.

  25. GApack04 10/03/2009 at 7:26 PM #

Wake is not good, the ACC is bad, and the Big East is horrible too. So that covers all of the above: State, Wake, and Pitt. To me today was a bad team beating another bad team, nothing more nothing less.
