SFN is ‘Pulse of the Fan Base’

accsportslogo2SFN would like to thank the great folks from the ACC Sports Journal for inviting us to partner with them on their weekly ‘Pulse of the Fan Base’.

They posted the feature to their website last night and it can be read by clicking here.

Over the last 12 months the blog has generated more than 3.5 million page views from 1.5 million visits of over 280,000 unique visitors originating from 164 different countries and U.S. territories.

That includes 104 visits from Malawi. Yes, Malawi.

We are going to have more detail behind the Q&A here on the site in the coming days, so we hope that you keep checking in and share your thoughts with us.

Start by defining the ‘fan base’ as the fan base that actually forms opinions on these topics. Realize that a large majority of any fan base are just folks who went to school or like a team and all they want is for their team to be successful; they don’t really form opinions or take the time to educate themselves on ancillary issues.

The next level of fan is one that has a level of ‘vestedness’ that goes beyond just wanting the team to win. Here is a very general profile of some characteristics of a ‘vested’ fan.

1. Some form of membership and/or financial commitment such as the Wolfpack Club, Alumni Association, annual fund, etc.
2. If they don’t have season tickets or lifetime rights, then they attend at least a few games in person every now and then.
3. Take the time to generally know the football and basketball schedule and make time watch the majority of games when televised.
4. At least occasionally read articles and try to gather information from sources like the ACC Sports Journal, The Wolfpacker, the internet, etc.

The ACCSJ’s introduction mentions an article featuring SFN that ran in the NC State Alumni Magazine in late 2007/early 2008. Clicking here will take you to the original entry (written at the time of the article) that includes some interesting history of the site.

These recent developments and focus on SFN serve to be very timely as we are currently working on a site re-design on which we hope to flip the switch in the coming weeks. If you have any computer/creative skills we encourage you to check here for a request to contribute to our efforts. In addition to new banners for the site, we will happily accept any original/unique logos, pictures, graphics files that would be good fits for the next generation of the site.

Well done Jeff. Well done indeed.

^Agreeded – excellent snapshot of the majority of your readership, and why most of us make this spot our 1st source for news and information. Although we struggle in the field, we have the ACC’s (and probably even one of the best national) top blog! Imagine what this place would be like, with these authors, and this readership if we actually had significant on the field success. Go Pack!

excellent article and goes to highlight the fact that the fans and owners on SFN are not the lunatic fringe when it comes to NC State. Keep up the great work!!!

Excellent Q & A. Thanks SFN for all that you do!

Interesting – they do advise that Brock and SFN are one of the more “opinionated” folks that they deal with.

You’d think two and two could be put together. I doubt that we’d all be very opinionated if we’d won an ACC Championship in football or basketball since 1987. Let’s put this in perspective, if you were born in 87, you’ve been alive more than 21 years – and you haven’t seen an NC State ACC Championship in the 2 sports that most fans give a flip about.

We’re opinionated the same way Cub fans are opinionated. The same way Packers fans were opinionated. The same way Red Sox fans were opinionated.

We’re just sick of not winning titles.

Brock touched on an excellent point regarding UNC’s championship…I remember the jealousy, bitterness and sadness I felt when UNC won the championship in ’93. The next time UNC won, it didn’t hurt as bad. This year, I hardly had any feeling at all.

I don’t know if it means I’ve matured or just accepted the fact that our current administration could care less whether or not we ever win another men’s b’ball title. I really don’t think it reflects positively on the current state of affairs – especially when you couple that w/ the fact that I have been to 1 men’s b’ball game the last 2 years and have had no desire whatsoever to go to more.

Just another example of how NCSU has an impact on so many people in this state, country and the world. Also, another example of how dedicated and loyal our fanbase is. Truly not the WalMart variety. Thanks SFN! I appreciate a forum that allows for discussion (both pro and con) and information about what all of us love: the North Carolina State University Wolfpack!

  8. choppack1 05/05/2009 at 9:12 AM #

RSP 123 – don’t get cause and effect mixed up. If NC State was doing well, we’d have plenty of Wal-Mart fans. The reason we don’t have them is because we haven’t hung any banners.

I will say this though – I think our overall futility, especially in basketball, combined w/ some success in football – has turned us into a de facto football school. Sadly, between the tailgating limit and the student seating fiasco, there almost seems to be an effort to change it. (Of course, I can’t honestly say that I ever got to a game more than 3 hours before kick off.)

I don’t think I’ve said this officially on here, but thanks SFN for all you do!

  10. tvp1 05/05/2009 at 9:37 AM #

Great responses SFN. I liken you to Radio Free Europe for the NC State fan base.

chop, as sad as it sounds in your post, I find myself in the exact same state of mind. I did go to several games this year, but the excitement and desire to go isn’t there anymore.

  12. TOBtime 05/05/2009 at 10:06 AM #

“Pulse of the fanbase” is an understaement. Nobody says it like SFN. Thanks guys.

  13. codebrown 05/05/2009 at 10:23 AM #

    You can do it!!!

  14. Girlfriend in a Coma 05/05/2009 at 10:25 AM #

To whomever was the drunk mouthing off to Fowler — I want to buy you a beer!

SFN: Never happened. Not even remotely. Total fabrication. But, a great example of the unethical lengths that some people will go to personally attack and discredit others. It is worse than politics.

You guys have NO IDEA some of the mentally unstable folks out there that are absolutely obsessed with some of the people on this blog.

If “Wolf Dog” or anyone else would like to speak to us about it then we would welcome an email at [email protected]

Additionally, if someone would please share with us the specifics of the incident – person’s name, date, venue, specifics – then I can promise you that the offender will be exiled from a relationship here.

There is no room for that kind of behavior from anyone and I would like to severe any blog ties and/or personal ties that I have with such a person. If he would be so kind as to share with me the specifics I will gladly take care of the situation and even issue an apology on the site to Fowler, the restaurant, and anyone else that this person may have offended in the past.

I look very forward to connecting with someone who won’t share their name and goes by ‘Wolf Dog.’

  15. Girlfriend in a Coma 05/05/2009 at 10:38 AM #

And if we happen to be in Fowler’s vicinity when I am in a position to buy you said beer, I will buy you several.

Good job on the Q&A, congrats!

  17. Spacewolf 05/05/2009 at 11:19 AM #

I visit this site daily (multiple times), but I rarely comment because the entry or a subsequent comment usually says what I was going to post.

You’ve stated my feelings about NC State athletics better than I could have myself. Superb job!

Alpha: Spacewolf, we’ll be in your neck of the woods for the STS-125 launch on Monday starting on Saturday. I’m coming down with my Dad, an old Apollo project veteran. Can’t wait to hear the stories about the old days.

Hope you enjoy the launch. I wish I were able to watch it, but alas, I’m travelling next week. I work in the O&C building, which was used to process the Apollo spacecraft and LM. Maybe your dad worked here too.

  18. triadwolf 05/05/2009 at 11:26 AM #

UNCG is now looking for a new AD. Mr. Fowler can start as early as June 1 and be within reasonable driving distance to his lake house. I also hear that it’s a cougar rich environment.

  19. ncsslim 05/05/2009 at 11:34 AM #

Good job, Jeff. I’m surprised that you were the most “opinionated”; whom else were they interviewing, SID’s? When your response(s) play well on PackPride, as they did, it means that you probably left alot on the table. However, you obviously understand that credibility can be at times more important than the absolute truth. Again, well thought out response.

  20. MP 05/05/2009 at 11:43 AM #

I’m assuming that “Wolf Dog” was referring to the comment made a few days ago by someone that they saw Lee Fowler in a restaurant and said something along the lines of “If you are not interested in making NC State as good as possible in athletics then just leave.” Can’t remember what post the comment was on.

But I didn’t get to see the initial comment on the ACCSJ post that apparently was deleted, so I may be referring to the wrong “incident”.

  21. BJD95 05/05/2009 at 11:51 AM #

Wolf Dog is just mad that we finally got sick of warning him about the nonsenical attack posts and deleted his account. Pay him no mind.

Good read here guys and believe it or not Heather Dinich wrote it. It backs up what we have seen posted here about the quality of our defense this upcoming year.

  23. James 05/05/2009 at 11:56 AM #

Has there been any movement on the AD situation or cause for continued hope?

  24. Cosmo96 05/05/2009 at 12:00 PM #

Fantastic piece! Great job! I think you represented us, your readership, and the fanbase as a whole very well. As evidenced by the comment at the bottom, the truth about our program as it stands now is harsh, and some people are uncomfortable with the reality of the situation. It’s easier, I guess, to criticize the messenger and pretend everything is fine than it is to admit that big changes need to be made in order to be successful.

By the way, I’ve never been to Malawi, but I’ve been in Djibouti for the past year, and visit this site almost daily.
