College Assistants Ride Salary Wave Remember when Chuck Amato’s initial “million dollar staff” was big news? Seems a bit modest in 2008 – see more info here. Be Sociable, Share! Except maybe at the very top level of college football I’m not sure their is a correlation between money, facilities and success. Those that get to spend the money will make you think so but I would love to see a study that proves that it does. Of course facilities and pay have to be in line with the majority of schools but having the highest payroll and the nicest stadium don’t mean anything other than you have some good fund raisers on staff. Noah 07/23/2008 at 9:39 AM # Texas was, I believe, the actual first $1 million staff and we were right behind them. T. Boone Pickens has been a major player in the Okie State football arms race. I remember reading that someone asked him why he was dumping so much cash into their program and his answer was simply…”Because I want to.” That and the fact that he’s 80 years old and is worth $3 billion and you can’t take it with you. I would imagine that he, like Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett and most other self-made super-rich realize that just handing your kids $1 billion probably isn’t the best idea. So they’re going to give most of it away to causes they believe in. And good for them, I say. melikesncsu 07/23/2008 at 10:01 AM # This is way off topic, so I hate to post it in this thread, but NC Pro Am is having free games. http://ncproam.com/ I’m not too excited by the UNC representation on every team, but it might be a fun chance to see Costner and even Anthony Grundy in action. Who doesn’t love some Anthony Grundy? BoKnowsNCS71 07/23/2008 at 10:45 AM # Well if T-Bone Pickens Plah-unn for an energy policy works as well as his pah-unn for improving OSU — we’re in trouble. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 07/23/2008 at 10:47 AM # “Who doesn’t love some Anthony Grundy?” There may be other NC State players that played as hard on the court as Grundy but no one has ever played harder. Noah 07/23/2008 at 12:06 PM # Grundy was with the Hawks for a little while. Did he make it more than one season? Noah 07/23/2008 at 12:07 PM # Well if T-Bone Pickens Plah-unn for an energy policy works as well as his pah-unn for improving OSU — we’re in trouble. I don’t even think Pickens believes the US will ever be energy independent. Nor does the US really have any incentive to be 100 percent independent. I say this as someone who is a huge fan of alternative energy. rtpack24 07/23/2008 at 3:00 PM # T. Boone only gave the Cowboys $400 million this last time. Justin Gainey will be the new basketball operations person in the near future. smithdl4 07/23/2008 at 3:22 PM # tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc There was one guy that played at State in the 60s that played harder than Grundy. I know it seems impossible but I’ve watched both play. Eddie Biedenbach who’s now the HC at UNC-A played harder than anyone I’ve ever seen. He wore out so many pairs of shoes that it made national news. Of course he had to play hard, he played for Press Maravich and of course State ran a full court press the entire game. Biedenbach was the key that made it work, and he did work. He was everywhere on the court with a motor that never stopped. Grundy was a close second but Biedenbach is number 1. Interesting tidbit is that he gave Rick Barnes his first coaching job while HC at Davidson. highstick 07/23/2008 at 9:17 PM # Biedenbach has some of the “fastest” hands of anyone I’ve ever seen. He’d beat your hands into blood playing the little “handslapping game” to see who could react fastest! Something about the Dasheed Wallace Foundation that just turns me off! packbackr04 07/24/2008 at 8:11 AM # ^^^ “Justin Gainey will be the new basketball operations person in the near future.” does this mean Q is gone for sure?^^^ packbackr04 07/24/2008 at 8:19 AM # Sidney Lowe II made a shiv in prison, said he was scared of other prisoners…. facing more jail time now. so hes got that going for him…. which is nice. Noah 07/24/2008 at 8:30 AM # Man, he really needs to give up the life of crime. He’s terrible at it. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 07/24/2008 at 8:31 AM # ^^ It is unfortunate that Sid II has made the choices he has. I don’t blame him one bit for his need to feel as if he needs to protect himself because he is a target for attack as well as for rape. I can’t really look down on an inmate for breaking the rules to defend themselves because the guards clearly can’t. The disgusting and vile jokes about men being raped in prison pisses me off more than just about anything else. I’ll hear ‘Christian’ people say things like “once he gets to prison and drops the soap he will learn his lesson.” Anyone that thinks rape or even beatings are an appropriate punishment for any crime needs to examine their life and thought process. Girlfriend in a Coma 07/24/2008 at 9:08 AM # I wish I could tell you that Sidney Lowe II fought the good fight, and the Sisters let him be. I wish I could tell you that – but prison is no fairy-tale world. He never said who did it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile – prison life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Sidney Lowe II would show up with fresh bruises. The Sisters kept at him – sometimes he was able to fight ‘em off, sometimes not. And that’s how it went for Sidney Lowe II – that was his routine. I do believe those first two years were the worst for him, and I also believe that if things had gone on that way, this place would have got the best of him. Girlfriend in a Coma 07/24/2008 at 9:09 AM # And that is great news about Gainey. Q was a screaming disaster. Noah 07/24/2008 at 11:39 AM # QJ was like some planet-devouring baddie from a cheap comic book. He’s the kind of guy you hope your enemy gets caught in a foxhole with.
