=======> Congratulations to Sean Miller and Xavier! In just 4 years he has already taken Xavier to a place in the NCAA Tournament where his former boss at NC State couldn’t achieve in a decade. It’s kind of hard to blame the strength of Duke and Carolina for our failure to succeed in anything outside of playing Duke and Carolina as we have never lost to the Tar Heels or Blue Devils in the NCAA Tournament. So, it must be Xavier’s facilities!

=======> If we’ve got to find something good about NC State’s basketball season how about the fact that we defeated two different teams in this year’s Sweet 16. This unique statistic should really impress the odd set of fans who earlier in the decade were impressed by the fact that the Wolfpack played and beat teams who had won the previous year’s National Championships (Maryland, Michigan State, UConn). Just think…we actually beat these teams in the year that they were good!! Anyone have any research as to the last time we defeated two different Sweet 16 teams in a regular season?

=======> We do a great job of criticizing officials while we try to hold them accountable on this blog. So, it is only fair to provide them apporpriate praise when it is deserved. So, allow me to praise some of the officiating that I have seen in this year’s NCAA Tournament – particularly the games involving Carolina. The Tar Heels have received fairly called games, which serves to support just how well they are playing. On the other hand, I felt Clemson could have gotten a little better treatment in their first round loss to Villanova.

More importantly, I wanted to say that this years Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament was FANTASTICALLY OFFICIATED. The conference and the crews deserve credit for how well the weekend’s games in Charlotte were managed.

So, why the hell can’t the conference provide us that kind of officiating throughout the season? Why are the touch fouls that get Duke and Carolina to the line so often during the regular season suddenly not fouls in the post season? and, why is their behavior suddenly called more accurately in the post season?

If the ACC provided that kind of officiating during the regular season perhaps the league standings wouldn’t be so skewed and the league could get more teams in the NCAA Tournament! Every year we point out a couple of games that were robbed from league teams that would have made a huge difference in their seasons and in the league’s representation in the big dance.

Isn’t it interesting that in a Tournament where the officiating was generally given credit and praised that the Duke Blue Devils didn’t even make the Championship game after easily cruising through the league over 16 games of poor officiating and competing for the conference’s #1 seed?

=======> Speaking of Duke, have you seen this great entry from Dave Glenn? The dude really delivers.

Consider this: Eight times in Krzyzewski’s 28 seasons at Duke, he has led teams without a (college) All-American on the roster.

First, there was a three-year stretch (1982-84) near the beginning of his tenure, before he got the recruiting ball rolling. Second, there was a three-year stretch (1995-97) that surrounded the season in which he left the team because of a back injury and exhaustion. Finally, there have been the last two seasons (2007-08).

Duke’s production during those eight seasons without a college All-American on hand? 0 ACC titles, 0 Sweet 16s, 0 Final Fours, 0 NCAA titles.

Duke’s production during those other 20 seasons under Coach K? 10 ACC titles, 17 Sweet 16s, 10 Final Fours, 3 NCAA titles.

When Duke won NCAA titles (1991, 1992, 2001) under Coach K, its best players were All-Americans such as Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley, Grant Hill, Shane Battier and Jason Williams. All five made the ACC’s 50-man 50th anniversary team, selected in 2002

=======> Color me confused.

NC State has just signed an agreement to play both Florida and Arizona in home and home basketball series in the coming years. We have a conversation about it here.

A little birdie close to the UF Athletics Deparment told me that the Gators are really excited about this series as they have been trying to schedule a non-FSU-ACC game for years.

Really? Looks like another of the absurd HSSS-contrived myths takes another public hit. I’m sure remember the bunk that the HSSS crowd and Lee Fowler constantly spun in response to fans’ frustrations with NC State’s embarassing out of conference records. Remember how we tried so hard and nobody would play us? Remember how Herb’s great connections to Pitino, Tubby, Donovan and others were supposed to be a big benefit for us, yet we somehow never saw any positive by-product of those relationships?

Speaking of close relationships, Roy Williams and Coach K speak longer to each other during a post-game handshake than Herb and Donovan did this week after the Gators knocked the Sun Devils out of the NIT in Phoenix. So much for a claim of deserving to be in the NCAA.

=======> Click here for BIG NEWS!! I mean BIG NEWS!!! You can’t miss it!!! And I guaran-damn-tee you that NC State’s Athletics department paid for it.

=======> I’m not having any problem with Davidson’s run to success in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

Not only are the Wildcats generally very likeable, they lost to NC State, Duke, and UNC-Ch THIS YEAR. That keeps all of their fans in their place when it comes to obscene stretches of reality…unlike the mighty midgets of Appalachian State whose fans have become so insufferable that nobody in the region can pull for them anymore.

For example, in 2006 App State won their second National Championship in a row. Congratulations. In the first game of that season, one of the worst NC State football teams of the last 20 years absolutely dominated the mighty midgets in Raleigh. The Wolfpack were obviously physically superior and shut down the midgets while only scoring 24 points as our TIGHT END played quarterback.

Last season, Wofford defeated App State just a few of weeks after being demolished by arguably our WORST team in 20 years. Later in the 2007, the Mountaineers needed a miracle to defeat James Madison who had been manhandled by Carolina earlier in the year. Yet, none of this is enough to keep the mighty midgets fans mouths shut. They can’t just be happy that they are the best of the midgets. Invariably, almost all ASU fans bridge their boasting of their national championships into stretches of how they are the best team in North Carolina and how they can compete in the ACC.

Puhlease. I leave you the following 16 second video from the last time the Wolfpack and the Mountaineers played to highlight the physical difference between playing with the midgets and playing with the big boys.

“And I guaran-damn-tee you that NC State’s Athletics department paid for it.”

I’ve eaten in the Angus Barn’s wine celler before, very nice.

“In just 4 years he has already taken Xavier to a place in the NCAA Tournament where his former boss at NC State couldn’t achieve in a decade.”

Good to see one of Herb’s assistants do well with what he learned.

  2. StateFans 03/28/2008 at 10:01 AM #

^ Yep. Miller obviously made a great move to leave Raleigh and get some experience under successful, Thad Matta at Xavier.

“Good to see one of Herb’s assistants do well with what he learned.”

We all know where he did NOT learn that success.

LF is caught lying to the fans. He was one of the “they refuse to play us” puppets and now he again looks like a fool.

Agreed on the officiating, if it had been like that all year, Duke is a 9 win team.

  4. LRM 03/28/2008 at 10:02 AM #

Ironically enough, Sean Miller’s success came after three years as Thad Matta’s right-hand man. There’s not much evidence of Herb Sendek in Miller’s coaching style at Xavier so it’s a weak argument that he’s a true Sendek disciple as much as it’s a weak argument that Sendek is a true Pitino disciple.

Xavier plays inside-out with Duncan, who plays with both power and finesse in the interior. Those Duncan-Lavendar ball screens are tough to stop.

Would Miller come back here? Did he part on relatively good terms?

SFN: Why would he come here after Fowler choose not to pursue him a couple of years ago. He is now high on the list for the Indiana job.

CLASS OF 89–Did i miss something? I did not know there was an opening.—-also Oblinger’s award of excellence to LF is evidence that the ncsu admin. is very satisfied with the status.oblinger knows not to compete with chapel hill–he wants to retire where he is.

Hilarious writing about ASU and the midgets. Man, I love putting that in my ASU-whoring friends faces that our worst football teams in the last 20 years were able to beat their best football teams. Be happy that you’re the champions of your division, but don’t act like it will transfer over to Division 1 when we beat you with a shitty team with a tight end as our quarterback!

“A little birdie close to the UF Athletics Deparment told me that the Gators are really excited about this series as they have been trying to schedule a non-FSU-ACC game for years.”

    lolllllllll fowler.

    Go Davidson!

The next day, during the CBS broadcast of the games at the RBC Center, Packer and Nantz praised NC State’s efforts in hosting the tournament games and the RBC Center facilities.

I’d rather they praised our efforts on the court. Maybe next year.

  9. RAWFS 03/28/2008 at 10:27 AM #

^ State fans don’t want another Herb-like coach.

That may be true, but Sean Miller has a style that’s as similar to Herb Sendek’s as Giselle Bundchen is like Rosanne Barr.

has anyone heard anything on Horners x’fer rumor?

is anyone else taking the midnight train outta Raleigh?

I agree about the officiating in the ACC tourny and some of it in the NCAA’s … There have been some really uneven games out there, but the games involving Chapel Hill have been worked pretty well

Then there’s UCLA, who has all of a sudden turned into ‘Duke west’ in regards to officiating 🙂 … What I did see of last night’s WKU – UCLA game looked fine though, and UCLA had a lot of foul trouble by the end of the game … So maybe all of the criticism that various refs have received over blown calls that completely favored UCLA in crunch time had some impact … The refs and ref coordinators will say it had “no bearing” and “each game is different”, but I’m thinking human nature played a part w/ the refs last night (“I don’t want to make a terrible call in UCLA’s favor tonight!!”)

Complaining about refs is a favorite pastime of mine (hey, I’m a State fan) – but SFN is right, you have to give credit where it’s due

    Go Davidson!

    Go Xavier!

    and go Louisville? (ewwwwwuggghhhhh)

  12. Mike 03/28/2008 at 10:57 AM #

Interesting point in yesterday’s USA Today on UCLA. Seems they have gotten 3 crucial calls in the final seconds of games that have directly led to wins. I bring it up here in discussion of the officiating and Dook.

I have always been a big proponent of playing the game and not blaming officials. If a call is missed 2 minutes into the game, no big deal, it will even out. But if a call is missed in the last seconds that directly affects a W/L, it does have an impact.

All 3 of these games UCLA should have lost. The article commented on how all 3 were critical games to UCLA getting the #1 seed and staying alive in the tourney. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/west/2008-03-26-ucla_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip

In one PAC10 game, a phantom foul was called with only a second or so left. Replays showed a clean block, but in the heat of the battle, this can be a tough call. So give the refs the benefit of the doubt – of course the game was at Pauley.

The next example was also PAC10,and one right after the other. They got away with a no call on a foul, and the ensuing possession, one of their players shot it over the backboard as time expired, and the ball went in. Clearly a violation of the rules but the refs counted it. Also at Pauley.

The latest was the other night against TexAM, when in the final seconds, up two, the AM player drives the lane, clearly gets hacked and no call. I saw that one in person and could not believe no foul was called.

Just goes to show, not only Dook and UNX, but someone is looking out for the other big names as well.

  13. Mike 03/28/2008 at 10:59 AM #

Wulfpup, you beat me to it. I am sure I started my post first, but the time it took to write it and find the link took more time 🙂

The most interesting aspect was the blow off by the UCLA people almost they expect the calls.

  14. Mike 03/28/2008 at 11:02 AM #

PLus last night, UCLA did not need any help from the zebras. Wulfpup, you mention “by the end UCLA had some foul trouble” but that just ties into what we have said all along. Timing is crucial – calls or no calls can affect the pace and transition DURING the game. By the end, a few make up whistles and looky here, the fouls are all even.

As I said, I dont normally complain about officials. Shut up and score more points, but this is very interesting.

  15. Brinson 03/28/2008 at 11:24 AM #

Funniest thing I’ve read all week – Hansbrough, I Hate Your Stupid Face

  16. wufpup76 03/28/2008 at 11:33 AM #

Yes, Mike – the refs have really been taken to task for those crucial calls that all went in UCLA’s favor (when it appeared none of them should have) … We’ll see how it plays out for them this wknd. and next (if they make it past Xavier)

After reading through this again, I have to respectfully disagree w/ SFN’s take on App St.’s success … Have some (or a lot, actually) of their fans puffed their chests out too much and become over-the-top obnoxious? Yes, certainly … But, so do a lot of our fans when we see the slightest bit of success from any of our athletics teams (anybody that does this is behaiving in a way that I totall disagree with, but that’s beside the point and who really gives a sh*t what I think anyway)

Where I really have to disagree w/ SFN on this topic is where it is implied that App. St., Davidson and other similar programs should “know their place” … While we (NC State fans) should always WANT to be better, I don’t think we should look down upon any other programs or tell them to “know their place” … Isn’t that what a lot of Duke and Chapel Hill fans and the MEDIA do to us? Don’t we hate it? Don’t we want to strive to always do better?

If App St.’s football program thinks it’s ready for Division 1 or even the ACC for that matter, then more power to them and good luck … But that doesn’t mean I don’t think we can’t kick their a**!

Please forgive if I read into this the wrong way … I believe you’re trying to tell their fans to “shut the F up” (and rightfully so), but the way it came across to me was “Know your place little boys” … I just know I hate it when I hear that type of sentiment from the media, Duke, Chapel Hill, etc … 🙂

  17. Wulfpack 03/28/2008 at 11:42 AM #

“State fans don’t want another Herb-like coach.”

If he has taken a team to the Elite 8, a team with 1/2 the resources of what we have, hell I’d take him any day of the week and twice on Sunday. He can flat out coach.

“While we (NC State fans) should always WANT to be better, I don’t think we should look down upon any other programs or tell them to “know their place” …

Amen. And where exactly is our place? We compete in the ACC, we have national championships in basketball, top notch facilities, huge donor base…and yet we still suck at every sport. Davidson, Xavier, hell West Virginia – they are laughing at us with 1/4 the resoureces. What have we done to be strut around like we are the high and mighty? Nothing.

ASU (the school in NC not AZ) has another giant on their football opener game. This year they will take on might LSU. I don’t think they will have their picture on the front of SI unless it’s a story about the injury of so many players in a 60 to 0 rout.

  19. roandaddy 03/28/2008 at 12:15 PM #

On Duke.. I don’t quite get this guy’s point. Sorry.. but if pulls in All Americans that means he can recruit, or at least develop talent. Based on how his players do in the pros, I would argue he is actually a pretty darn good college coach vs the benefit of great players.

The flip argument can be made with ole Demon Smith.. the 1982 team could have won NBA championships with the star power on that team. UNX teams seem to be simply a McDonald’s All American team every year. If good players make or break a coach, then Demon is WAY over rated.

Maybe with the benefit of 20/20 you say he should have taken that NBA job and end on top.

  20. Afterglow 03/28/2008 at 12:16 PM #

packbackr04-I really don’t think there is any validity to the whole Horner transferring rumor. It was mentioned on this BLOG as hearsay and I think we should stop questioning it.

Unless it’s in the news or there is some inside source that knows about players transferring, I say we just let it go. Otherwise I think we’re asking for trouble when someone says they heard it from another in an inadvertent “telephone game” whose origins either started from some misinformation or from some completely incompetent source.

I guarantee one thing, Les Miles will not take Happy Appy lightly.

SFN — isn’t Archie with Thad Matta now? Those Millers seem to know where to go work on their coaching skills.

  23. packbackr04 03/28/2008 at 12:34 PM #

yes, archie jetted as soon as he got another job offer. good career move

  24. Noah 03/28/2008 at 12:39 PM #

I’ve heard that the Warner rumor is false. I’ve heard another rumor about another player…we should know something soon.

  25. Noah 03/28/2008 at 12:41 PM #

On App. State, if I were Rich Rodriguez, I’d schedule another App State game in about two years. Only, I would agree to play them at App State.

And I would leave my first team in the entire game and I would beat them 100-0.
