ESPN’s Pat Forde on Lowe’s Miracle Run

If ever there was a “must read” article, this one is it. You can’t buy press this good. Something special is brewing in Raleigh, win or lose tomorrow afternoon. Sit back and feel the magic, and tell the kids your own stories about 1974, 1983, 1987, and every other moment of NC State’s proud basketball heritage. Tear-jerking excerpt:

As the latest upset wound to a conclusion Saturday, assistant coach Monty Towe leaned over and whispered in Lowe’s ear, “Happy birthday, Jimmy V.”

Since returning to his alma mater as head coach last spring, Lowe has paid more than one visit to Valvano’s grave site in Raleigh. When I talked to Lowe last week on the phone, he referred to V in the present tense, speaking with genuine affection for his former coach. Even before Towe whispered in his ear, Jimmy V was on Lowe’s mind in the final seconds.

“He would be very proud of these guys,” Lowe said of Valvano. “Their passion and the way they’ve been playing.”

V would be very proud of his former point guard, too. All he’s done in his first year in Raleigh is take the lowest-seeded team ever to the final of this august event. A No. 10 seed had never won a game in the ACC tourney before, much less three.

V would no doubt love the player meetings the Pack have held before every game this tournament, too. He’d love to hear Gavin Grant’s description of the message before the Pack played Duke on Thursday night: “Don’t come out and let anybody punk you.” Might not be soaring oratory, but it’s solid playground pragmatism.

Hat tip to SFN commenter “wayofthemaster.”

Amazing article. I just read it and came to the site to put it up…. glad you beat me to it

    My personal favorite quote:

“Last spring, when NC State was seeking a replacement for Herb Sendek and being turned down by everyone but the local weatherman, I poked fun at the school’s search. It’s now time to say that athletic director Lee Fowler got the right guy — and next year could really be something in Raleigh.”

it’s not crow for saying we shouldn’t want to compete against UNC and duke but its a start.

When talking about what a win tomorrow would be for the program, “… that would be a great statement for us, but I think… [you’d have to] attribute that to coach Lowe. The guy’s an excellent coach… X’s and O’s, I’ve never seen anything like it, the way he draws up these quick hitters and plays to get people in different positions. I’ve got to tip my hat to him; he’s the BEST coach I’ve ever played for.” -Gavin Grant, 11mins into this video: http://www.wral.com/sports/video/1230648/

    I can’t agree with him more…

He, or rather they(sid and monty)are definately channeling the ghosts of the wolfpack past. If they had lost today I would have called the season a success. Watching them collectively dig down and still find the umph within to persevere is a testament to the wolfpack spirit. We are a contender damnit!!!!! Shame on those who accused us of having dreams too lofty for daring to think of competing with roy and k. We are on the same level …our neighbors need to get used to it. WE ARE BACK.

There is no doubt Jim Valvano would be proud of these gentlemen for the way they have carried themselves throughout the season and tournament.I think we can all go to bed tonight, or not and find solace in the accomplishments of these guys.I think the long line of wolfpack greats would agreee the team of 06,07 will long be remembered for the scrappiness,TEAM effort, grit and tenacity in the face of biased media, inconsistent officiating, and all around hateration from regional foes on a pseudo pedestal of espn fed bs.Lets Dance….LONG LIVE THE WOLFPACK

I keep saying this team has exceeded my expectations. Regardless of the outcome of the final this IS something special.
Just watching the team grow over the season (not without some pain, true) has given a great insight into Lowe and the staff as well as the players.
I was especially pleased to see Neiman, Horner and Ferguson play positive roles against BC. It’s no longer the “six pack”. The team was able to function for short periods without Atsur (something they could not do even a week ago). Some serious signs of yeaching by the staff and a lot of behind the scenes work by the players – both of those bode well for the future.
Probably the most telling thing is there is a different air around the program. Lowe is such a calming influence on the team.
It’s taken a LONG time to return to the “feel” of a successful program (no slight to previous coaches intended but the truth is the truth). The “feel” is so subjective. And it feels so right.
I can’t help but think that the ghost of Jimmy V is with this team.

Dunno if this has been posted yet or not, but look at that…front of ESPN’s college basketball page.

That’s beautiful. A coach who can work magic in the postseason will always have my support.

And, I can’t lie. There is definitely a different atmosphere this time around. Maybe it’s because all the fans are on the same page for once. Maybe it’s the new offense which (despite my admitted affection for the PO) manages to score both 3’s AND 2’s. Whatever it is, there’s something there, and regardless of tomorrow’s outcome I have never been more excited for the follow-up year.

That said…why stop now? Time to take the season series against the Holes!

^Sorry. I see that the article itself is the one front-paged. My apologies!

The tradition has returned. The grand tradition of our proud basketball program that began with Case and flowed through the Sloan and Valvano years has returned. Coach Lowe has seen to it in short order. He knows the passion and pride of program and has made sure this team understands it is not something that can or should be brushed aside. Playing for N.C. State is not a job like “chopping wood”, it is a privledge that many before have built and passed down to today’s players. From Vic Bubas, Lou Pucillo, Larry Lakins, Vann Williford, Tommy Burleson, David Thompson, Monte Towe, Vinny Del Negro and yes, Sidney Lowe just to name a very few. To wear an State jersey and be a part of a great heritage that has competed at the very highest levels for many decades is a great honor and should never be taken lightly. Today, this year’s team can do something to further build on that legacy. Yes the tradition is back and thank you Coach Lowe and staff for expediting its return.

Unlike the ignorant odds makers, I believe that NC State will cut the nets down after the final horn sounds today in Tampa. UNC has a deeper bench, more “all Americans”, the mystique of “Carolina”. NC State has four things that trump that…PRIDE, HEART, DESIRE, and FAITH. You can say that no amount of these four things matter, but you would be wrong. Sid has these guys believing that they can beat ANYBODY, and they have shown that it does not matter how many “star” players you may have, they can take you out.

    ‘Pack by 5—-GO WOLFPACK!

I appreciated Pat Forde’s article and his willingness to admit, “I poked fun at the school’s search.” That’s the kind of change in perspective on a national level that the wolfpack needs. Forde also had an interesting article a week ago about Stephen Curry of Davidson, son of former VaTech and NBA player Dell Curry. Curry led the Southern conference in scoring as a freshman this year, yet was unrecruited by the ACC. In the article Forde quotes Charleston head coach Bobby Cremins, no stranger to ACC basketball, whose team lost to Davidson in the conference final.
“When I see Seth Greenberg, I’m going to give him a piece of my mind,” Cremins joked. “The kid wanted to follow his dad to Virginia Tech, and I’m disappointed in Seth right now.” That’s because Seth’s tepid response to Curry’s desire to be a Hokie has become Cremins’ headache in the SoCon. Greenberg offered Curry a chance to walk on …
Curry could have helped Tech’s 42% effort, from the floor AND from the line. A lot more people in hokieland share Cremin’s disappointment in Greenberg who came up empty 3 times against the pack this year. They echo Duke & UVA fans in thinking, “how could we lose to the NC State?” They can thank the pack for the extra rest before the NCAA tourney.

Great article. Good way to start the morning.

On a more general note, thanks to SFN for their outstanding coverage (as always) during the tournament. This has been my best source of coverage while traveling out of ACC country. Keep up the great work!

    “Unlike the ignorant odds makers…”

The pack is a 14 point underdog. The last time we were that big an underdog in a championship game was when we played Houston. The trophy is still on display and the case has room for another.

NC State in Saragin’s computer rankings:
    95 Thursday AM
    88 Friday
    85 Saturday
    79 Sunday

  14. Astral Rain 03/11/2007 at 7:50 AM #

What about 97 vs UNC? That team had less of a chance then the current one.

  15. branjawn 03/11/2007 at 7:50 AM #

Did anyone else notice last night on ESPN when the put up State’s “resume” that is said Versus RPI Top 50: 2-4 ? At first I thought maybe it was old Reg season data. That is totally wrong! We beat UNC, and VT twice during the Regular season. And after beating UVA and d00k we should have 5 top 50 wins. Anyways, how could they be that far off? And the announcer was like, NC State only has 2 top 50 wins. Just kinda ticked me off, shows how little respect we get. Sagarin only has us a few spots behind Drexel. Kinda interesting. I mean, I wonder if The Commitee would consider us over GT now possibly after beating 3 straight Top 30 teams.

  16. TNCSU 03/11/2007 at 7:57 AM #

I believe we still have to win it all to get a bid! Great article by Forde, BTW! Sidney and the Staff really have these guys playing well, and BELIEVING they can do it! What a Great job!! Let’s go Pack!

    No they wouldn’t.

“Let’s understand something. The ACC is the best conference in the country. I think it’s proven that this weekend,” BC coach Al Skinner said. “As I told my guys, once we get out of this freaking ACC, we’re going to do OK.”

  19. BJD95 03/11/2007 at 8:40 AM #

Somewhere in one of the selection committee’s back rooms, there is a “big board” with an 11 or 12 seed in the West, with “Florida State/NC State” pencilled in. Boys, let’s go get it.

I watched the WRAL locker room stuff. The focus and intensity on our players’ faces was incredible. They are confident, but they are not satisfied. Atsur looked, well, wolf-like, to be honest. He’ll have the adrenaline to make it through today (I’d worry more about next week for him).

  20. branjawn 03/11/2007 at 8:46 AM #

How about a First Rd game against possible #5 seed Nevada! That would be a funny game to watch. “and the Wolf Pack trail the Wolfpack by 3!”

  21. tvp 03/11/2007 at 9:03 AM #

I mean, the NCAAs would be great…but I want the championship.

What a wonderful weekend to be a ACC fanatic. I love waking up and knowing we have another game to play.

    What a wonderful Sunday morning.

Glad our up and coming TE George Bryan won the 4A State Championship in the Dean Dome last night with New Hanover. Already winning a big game on Carolina territory…..he should get used to it.

Happy B-Day Jimmy V! What a fantastic, heart felt reminder to “Never Give Up” and bring the ACC Title Home for more reasons than we can imagine.

  23. whitefang 03/11/2007 at 9:16 AM #

At this point I couldn’t care less about the NCAA’s. The ACC tournament miracle that we have been witnessing is all that matters. To have a chance to play today against UNC is by itself an unbelievable miracle Sidney Lowe and his team have performed. A win today would really be all the “planets lining up” in my opinion and worthy of the top ten list of all time Pack moments.
A 10 seed, 4 games in 4 days, and against #1 seed UNC – now that’s the stuff NC State basketball history is made of.

  24. TNCSU 03/11/2007 at 9:18 AM #

I concur TVP — we’ve been to the NCAA’s the last 5 years, but we haven’t won the ACC tournament in 20 years!! We need to get a banner hanging in RBC! The first one that we’ve earned since moving to the RBC! Let’s win this tourney, and let the chips fall after that!
