This is Why People Hate Duke
We don’t make a habit of linking to Gregg Dickhead.
But, we also don’t make a habit of purposefully limiting our content.
With this said, Dickhead actually hit a homerun with a sweet piece explaining that the Clemson travesty in Cameron is exactly why people hate Duke
Dickhead highlights that the last three times the ACC office has publicly reprimanded officials have all been games involving Duke where the Blue Devils received an advantage.
What are the odds?
Last Sunday, Caulton Tudor took a more diplomatic approach to the issue. But, he deserves credit for (a) addressing the issue and (b) including UNC in his comments.
A popular theory in many ACC camps and on Internet message boards Friday was that, during all the confusion, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski slipped the zebras a couple of thousand bucks each.
It didn’t happen that way, of course. But since perception has a way of merging with reality, Thursday’s developments only add to a growing problem for the ACC.
Simply put, lots of fans are convinced that the league’s refs are little more than carbon-based robots for Duke and North Carolina.
There’s no proof of an officiating conspiracy, but that doesn’t change the fact that many fans genuinely believe otherwise. The Clemson-Duke episode fuels those convictions, and it’s something the ACC has to fret.

Glad to see the matter being documented on the national level, even if it is by panty-waste maroon.
It seems like the ACC office also said that they had a conference with the officials after the BC/Duke last year as well. There were some horrific no-calls on SheWill that directly affected the game’s outcome.
Does anyone else remember this one?
I cant believe I am saying this, but my hatred for Duke has surpassed my level of loathing for Chapel Hill. (Was I the only guy rooting for an earthquake Wednesday night?)
Other than seeing Lowe hang a banner, there is nothing I’d like to see more than Duke have a run of losing seasons under K. Nobody, and I mean nobody, has as much “come upp’ins” as the Dukies. Nobody.
Even from the perspective of a fan of the game I hate Duke. How K plays basketball has set the game back 40 years? The constant hand checking and holding only serves to make ugly what can be beautiful. My fellow hockey fans understand what the NJ Devils (NJ again? wierd) did to the NHL. They needed a work stoppage to get rid of all the clutching and grabbing in hockey. The ACC and the NCAA needs to clean up the game, so the beauty of the sport can shine though.
Dan, I’m in total agreement. It’s a travesty what has happened to the game of basketball both at the college and pro level. It’s a game of pushing, shoving, grabbing, traveling, carrying the ball, just too name a few.
Athleticism is one thing, but play still needs to be within the confines of the rules or else it’s just a game of “grab ass”!
That is exactly why people hate Duke.

Yep – it is why people hate Duke – but it’s also why some of us hated UNC.
Clearly, it’s a problem w/in the ACC and the ACC leadership. They have the overdog mentality. Winning an ACC game against Duke or UNC is like trying to detrhone a boxing champion. Not only do you have to beat them, you have to beat them so bad that you can’t allow the decision to go to the judges, because they’ll always side w/ the champions. That said, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that FSU and UVa beat Duke last week and we beat UNC last Saturday after this latest fiasco. The cat was almost out of the bag and the league appears to have had a sit down w/ the officials.
Dan: A tornado to destroy everything, an earthquake to suck it all up, and then a flood to cover it up forever. That was the only good outcome.
And speaking of the refs, i believe that carolina put the proverbial nail in the coffin after the bullshit continuation basket by Lawson that put them up by 7. They blew the damn wistle before he even jumped for the layup! and still counted the basket.
I’ll never forget the 2003 ACC tournament championship game. Those were 2 very different halves. There was a night and day difference in the officiating. The refs came out calling fouls with a hair trigger in the 2nd half. Obviously, coach K punked the refs at halftime. Of course, it didn’t help that Sendek let him get away with that. I bet Sidney Lowe won’t put up with that.
But something has really changed. Today, there’s always somebody out there who’s johnny-on-the-spot with his cell phone camera. All he has to do is post the video on YouTube, send the link to a few bloggers and presto, instant firestorm. I’m sure the refs will be wary of this in the future. Hopefully, their fear of a YouTube fueled scandal will exceed their fear of coach K and other dogmatic coaches.
Does Duke and Carolina really received preferential from the ACC and the refs? How has Duke lost 5 acc games and UNC 2 games so far. Did Duke get all the calls during Coach K’s early years and how about Carolina winning 8 ggames a few years ago. In sports everyone hates dominance. Nobody like UCLA winning 10 titles, but UCLA fans. If we were fighting for ACC Championships and NCAA Titles people would hate us and be jealous. Its appears from the blogs and 850 Buzz that the majority of us who are state fans are jealous of the blue teams. They have earn their place by great coaching, integrity,recruiting, tradition, and consistency. We are the biggest whiners in the ACC and maybe the country.

K isn’t out on the court before the game giving $100 handshakes to all the officials but that doesn’t mean there isn’t an pro-Duke/UNC officiating bias in this league.
What it comes down to for me is this: There are multiple clear examples of Duke and UNC opponents losing close games in recent years where the late-game pro-Duke/UNC officiating or timekeeping played an undeniable role in the outcome of the game.
If Duke and UNC have not received more than their fair share of close/pivotal/game-changing calls over the course of the last 10-15 years then clearly there must be similar examples of them losing games over the same time period where their loss was DIRECTLY attributable to a subjective, late-game call or calls by an official.
CAN ANYBODY, in basketball or (UNC) football, remember a specific instance where after the game you leaned back in your chair and thought, “Man, UNC/Duke just got hosed?”

All you have to do is follow the money trail. Sounds trite, but tell me one instance in American history where this is not the case. Duke basketball for all intents and purposes is the flagship of Walt Disney’s sports programming empire. ESPN essentially serves as Duke’s recruiting arm, and in retun they continue to score a return on investment by getting to air an ultra-successful team guaranteed to draw ratings and thus contribute to the justification of the network’s ever-increasing cost to cable companies. Sure K is a great coach who teaches great players; there’s no agressive conspiracy to give favorable calls to the Dookies over their opponents. However, when there’s a close call at hand or a controversy over the clock or other intangible, the money points to advantage: Duke. All those people tuning in are oestensibly doing so b/c everyone loves Duke and they wanna see ‘em win. If you think that doesn’t sway an average, human official, you have way more faith in humanity than I do. The media creates heroes and standards. Before the mid-90s, how many people considered Duke-UNC the premiere rivalry in ALL of sports? ESPN created that out of thin air. I can remember in the mid-80s when K’s teams were finally coming around my UNC friends actually rooting for Duke as a conference ally. But now there’s money to be made by feeding the hype machine, so UNC-Duke is now the most colossal battle ever waged on athletic fields through the ages, with each game becoming the best ever in the battle, images of bloodied faces galore heading into commercial breaks (’cause no basketball player has EVER been bloodied except in Duke-UNC games) and celebration of the fans (’cause no other school has any fans that – GASP! – cheer!). Follow the money and the hype, and you’ll see why these schools get the breaks. Consequently, that’s also why it’s going to be harder for the Pack to break back onto the national spotlight. Lowe has to win games and recruit quality national players, but he’s also gotta find a way to get the hype machine behind him, ’cause nothing recruits like ESPN and Dick Vitale performing verbal sexual favors on you and your chosen team on national television.

GD again misses the point entirely. True, Duke is the most truly hated team in the ACC, but to blame this simply on the officials is absolutely ridiculous. He likes to oversimplify issues to generate reaction. Personally, I can think of about 50 more relevent reasons that won’t allow me to ever take a duke fan seriously.
I have watched the ACC all of my life, and from a very early age at that, but I don’t see the out and out bias as much I have seen very poor officiating. I see poor calls, and although they won’t admit it publicly, make-up calls to reverse previous errors. But the thing I that I detest the most is what Dan and highstick touched upon, that is we now have hockey games without skates or ice where basketball was once played. The clutching and grabbing is just out of control and it detracts from what once was a beautiful game to watch. Just call the game as it was intended originally and I’d be satisfied. Not seeking perfection just fairness, honesty and most of all competency from the striped shirt crowd.
I haven’t posted here since the coaching search but I’ve enjoyed reading all the while. I don’t know about the other schools, but I know for a fact that at Duke the person working the clock, pos arrow, etc. is hand picked by the school and is a BIG fan. It’s not a matter of K having to pay anyone off, these people would be more than happy to “help” their favorite team. It would be like one of us working the clock at the RBC. Just something to think about.
Honestly, I don’t think it is pro Duke/UNC bias as much as it is pro K/Roy bias. And I don’t think this bias is ever stated or even necessarily intentional. But if you are a ref and during a game you have 2 coaches gnawing on your ass, say coach K and Oliver Purnell, which guy would you rather be held in high esteem by? Coach K of course, so they tend to listen to him.
Of course the irony is that when they do listen to him K probably is thinking these refs are spineless bastards. Beofre each game I think coaches are allowed to veto one ref. I would love to get a list of refs that K has vetoed – those are probably the good ones.

You could’ve ended that after “win games”. That’s ALL. Did you see the positive NATIONAL publicity State and Lowe received after the UNC game???? All he has to do is WIN games — Of course, recruiting quality national players helps, because another Washburn is NOT what we want! Just WIN baby!

Doyel is such a troll that I’m betting he will request his epitaph be written as an insult in order to cause traffic at his grave. I dont mean this to be offensive, but the man is a literal whore of a journalist. He has sold his integrity in order to collect web hits.
I refuse to read anything by Doyel. When you feed the troll, you encourage him. Yeah, its tempting to feed him when he is flaming your enemies, but that only makes it acceptable for him to come crash your party next.
