SFN’s Football Scoop and Analysis

SFN Notes: Originally posted early Sunday Morning. Sorry that we couldn’t get this up prior to the ECU game like we had said that we would. Thanksgiving and family obligations have a way of impacting our best intentions. We will keep this entry at the top of the blog for most of Sunday and Monday, so please don’t ignore new entries that will be posted below this entry.

It was quite a week of rumor and innuendo for NC State Football. It publicly started on Monday when we shared that we were getting a lot of chatter and rumors that Chuck Amato had been fired. These rumors intensified by the way that NC State handled Monday’s football press conference.

StateFansNation choose to stay out of the chatter during the holiday week and allow things to play themselves out. After last night’s embarrassment it is pretty obvious what the ultimate result regarding Chuck will be. (Although we don’t think that the ECU had any impact on the decision). The only questions that probably remain are: (1) when will a press conference be announced? and (2) will the agreement with Amato be structured as a resignation or a firing?

Today we will offer you blend of what we have heard and with some educated speculation of what can deduce has been going on:

* There were some discussions and meetings of some top donors two or three weeks ago where mobilization on a potential buyout of Chuck Amato’s contract was discussed. Lee Fowler was not involved in the meetings nor was he aware of them at the time.

* The NC State Board of Trustees met (“BOT”) late last week before the Carolina game. The BOT expressed their displeasure regarding Chuck Amato and the direction of the football program to the administration – namely to Chancellor Oblinger.

* As with any coaching decision, Lee Fowler has been reluctant to make any kind of move on Coach Amato. (Shocker) You can go back to Fowler’s comments as recently as a few weeks ago for more on his stance.

* The BOT members basically told Fowler to put a sock in it. There has been some pretty strong rumors that Fowler’s act is finally wearing thin with the BOT and others around the University. Thank God.

* Fowler completely changed his stance on the football situation with his “no comment” on Monday that we broke down in this entry.

* The end result of the pre-Carolina-game discussions may have called for a firing of Coach Amato if the football team lost to UNC-CH and ECU. An embarassing loss to a miserable Carolina team probably changed the dynamic of waiting for the ECU game.

* Early this week, rumors developed that the BOT called an emergency meeting on Sunday after the Carolina game and decided to pull the trigger on the decision. Lee Fowler evidently met with Coach Amato at 8am on Monday morning – adding gas to the rumor that a decision had been made.

* Large donors to the Wolfpack Club received telephone calls during the week asking for financial support of a buyout. Amato’s contractual buyout should be close to a manageable $800k. We do not know the size of Marc Trestman’s buyout.

* As Thanksgiving week progressed, lips got tighter and there was no official indication that anything had been decided. The strategy of those close to the decision was to share that “things look bad for Chuck” but that no formal decision had been made.

* Additionally, nobody with ties to Coach Amato expressed that they had any indication of a firing. Assistant coaches went about their usual business and ultimately hosted recruits for the ECU game. We think that much of the week was spent working on specifics of the structure of Amato’s exit – ultimate financial package? resignation/firing? etc?

* The exact timing of the official decision is inconsequential. But, at this moment we have received no word from anyone with reason to expect Coach Amato to be retained at NC State. 850TheBuzz broke the following on their blog before/during the State-ECU football game:

For the last several days we’ve been hearing way too many rumors for the following not to be true. But, reports from press row indicated that NC State’s assistant coaches were informed prior to tonight’s game (Friday?) that Chuck Amato would not be retained. The outcome of tonight’s game — ultimately the Pack’s 7th straight loss to end the season — had no bearing on the decision.

* We expect that NC State will hold a press conference to announce the program will be searching for a new coach in the coming days. If the PC isn’t announced for today (Sunday) then it would not surprise us if it didn’t happen until Tuesday. Carolina is set to announce Butch Davis’ hire on Monday and NC State hosts Michigan in basketball on Monday night. A Tuesday announcement would be much more appropriate than a Monday announcement.

* We hope that the BOT has learned its lesson from Lee Fowler’s basketball search debacle. The end result of getting lucky to land Sidney Lowe – whom Fowler was unwilling to pursue for four weeks prior to Lowe’s ultimate hiring – does not absolve Fowler from the month of embarrassment that he brought the University in April.

* After Bill Cowher (more on this in a moment), the names of Paul Johnson, Jimbo Fisher, Norm Chow and Mike Sherman have been on the initial lists around Raleigh that seem to be evolving.

* Newland, NC-native, Paul Johnson seems to be the favorite potential candidate amongst your average ‘I am a fan who thinks that I have come up with a great name because it is the only coach with whom I am familiar’.

* The ferocity with which some Johnson’s supporters express their opinion scares us. Many of these people seem soldon Johnson way too early in the process and appear to have closed minds about other coaches (which we are sure that they know nothing about). SFN thinks that Johnson should be a candidate for the job and should be analyzed thoroughly. BUT, we are emphatic on our position that a true process needs to be run and all candidates analyzed fairly. Johnson should NOT be annointed a ‘front-runner’ by anyone before the program gets into the meat of the search (if a true search is ever needed).

* Ironically, Jimbo Fisher was Chuck Amato’s #1 offensive coordinator candidate to replace Noel Mazzone two years ago. Fisher received a large raise to remain at LSU. Amato ultimately could not lure any of his top candidates to State due to his increasingly negative reputation with assistant coaches throughout the country and had to settle for Marc Trestman, who also had reputation of being both strange and difficult with which to work.

* Former Green Bay Packers Head Coach, Mike Sherman is obviously the oddball in this initial group of candidates. (pictured below) Like all things NC State, it all about your personal connections and not necessarily talent. (See Les Robinson’s relationship with Lee Fowler as exhibit #2,000) Sherman evidently owns a vacation house near a key Wolfpack Club member and has expressed interest in the job if it were to ever come open. It is interesting that “wolfchicEE” on Pack Pride’s Message Boards has been sharing Sherman’s name for over a week. Nobody just originates a name like Mike Sherman out of nowhere. WolfchicEE lives in Charlotte, as does the key Wolfpack Club member who knows Sherman.

* We are going to with-hold any comments regarding Cowher at this moment (and we caution any of you to refrain from wasting your time typing comments like “why would he be interested?”, etc, etc on this blog). We will explain more at a time to be determined.

* NC State badly needs to hire a coaching consultant to lead this process, not just participate in the process. The best $35,000 UNC has spent in the last 10 years was hiring Chuck Neinas to lead their search. Need A Coach? Call this guy!

* We think that an initial list (after Cowher, of course) of Paul Johnson, Jimbo Fisher and Norm Chow is an attractive original list. But, we hope that the University is very careful to go through a quick but comprehensive process to appropriately vet all potential coaches who may be interested. This is the value that Neinas brings to the table. Who knows what coach out there may be interested in the opportunity? What if a Mike Price is looking to get back into a major conference? What if a big name is starting to feel unfair heat in their current job and would be open to re-setting their clock in a new environment?

* Lee Fowler is NOT the person with the capabilities to juggle ^this kind of intense and critical work. The man “knows basketball” and couldn’t get a coaching search done in over a month. (Perhaps he should have spent less time at his Lake Gaston home on the weekends during the search?) The man literally lost 25 pounds during the basketball search because he was ill-prepared to deal with the stress that comes with the job. How in the hell can anyone expect Mr. “I Know Basketball” to get up to speed quick enough on dozens of football candidates that he hasn’t been following for years because he never expected to have to fire a coach during his tenure at NC State?

* SFN strongly endorses the retention of current assistant coaches Curt Cignetti, Todd Stroud and Dwayne Dixon for the transition period as well as strong candidates for retention for any coach that ultimately is hired.

* Let’s leave you with a little bit of a lightened mood. You cannot miss this classic entry!

A sincere thank you for the solid and thoughtful information. Lets hope that no matter who the search ultimately lands, that he is as good a fit as Sidney has turned out to be.

Lots of subliminal as well as explicit nuggets in there. Very well done. Looks like I’ll bookmark SFN as my homepage and be hitting refresh every 3 minutes over the next few weeks.

Thank You for tthe information, Lets just take the time to make the right decision and not be embarrassed

I’ll chip $1,000 to send Fowler on a month long vacation. Enough with the humiliation, already! I can’t take another foulup led coach search. Scratch that, apply that money to HIS buyout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. forst8 11/26/2006 at 1:28 PM #

Totally agree with your initial list of potential coaching candidates. Great discussion on how the coaching search should be handled. Thanks SFN for another well written and carefully considered article.

SFN…Thank you for the Great information….now I’m ready for the Press Conf…the day…should be today so to avoid the Davis…Monday Intro.

I was at the game last night because I would not sell or give my tickets away…in fact, my wife and I were out of town and drove back to be at the game…I started to get very excited when we scored in the 1st Qtr…only to see the air leak out of the balloon…I will always support NC State and as mad as I’ve been about the lack of coaching I am ready for a new chapter in Wolfpack Football….GO PACK!!

  7. old13 11/26/2006 at 1:34 PM #

If Foulup is not at least bypassed in this process, the Pack will never “get back” in my lifetime. Foulup needs to go as a priority over any other changes!

Could MAF been here for “consultations!” Seems strange to me that she was in town. I don’t visit past employers myself.

Hopefully she was looking for an AD and Football Coach to help upgrade her sports facilities.

    From today’s Denver Post:
“Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow has been connected to the possible opening with the Miami Hurricanes. He also has been mentioned as a potential replacement at North Carolina State. … If Chuck Amato is fired by N.C. State, Denver tight ends coach Tim Brewster also could be a candidate. Brewster bowed out of consideration at Iowa State last week. Stanford might also be interested in Brewster. …”

  10. Your AD, Lee Fowler 11/26/2006 at 1:50 PM #

Who in the hell is Tim Brewster and how is he qualified for this job?

  11. RickJ 11/26/2006 at 2:00 PM #

I read where Miami had hired Neinas for their search. This wouldn’t seem to present any real problem as I doubt there would be much overlap with the searches but you never know. I’m pretty sure there is at least one other person (group) similar to Neinas that head hunts for college football coaches.

“After Bill Cowher . . . , the names of Paul Johnson, Jimbo Fisher, Norm Chow and Mike Sherman have been on the initial lists around Raleigh . . .”

I like that list. I had thought of Fisher earlier, feeling that he has the big game experience that a PJ possibly lacks. But I think any and all could do the job.

As of Thanksgiving week certin high school choaches who are currently coaching next years incoming class of freshman had already been contacted and assured that no matter what the coaching staff resembles next year the program is still very much committed to those indivdual players. Sounds like proper handling of the situation behind the scene to me.

If a change is made I hope Amato shows as much class as O’Cain did. O’Cain was very helpful and up front all along even upon being terminated with what was needed to have a succussful program at NCSU. At the time there was talk of retaining MOC and using money to hire better assisitants but MOC rebukked that idea and was very honest with the administration smae as Sheridan had been that without facilties upgrade it would be hard to maintian getting high profile recruits. Due to that we began our search knowing we would have to hire a coach and committ to upgrading football facilities. We have done that. We upgraded and have had more success recruiting the last six years than we probably ever have. Now we only need to upgrade our coach. I like some things Amato has done but it is time for a change. Part of our problem is we hired a nice and humble man, but Amato has grown an arrogant ego that grew as quickly as his pay raise. It is no secret lots of the staff at NCSU does not like him even as far low as the groundskeeping grew. The arrogant self absorbed celebrations by players and out of control game antics are a direct reflection of the coaches own attitude. Amato was well respected nationwide when he first got here and was able to lure big name assistants, but his demeanor and ego has changed and he has not been a good boss to work with and assistants have continued ran from NCSU and I don’t see Amato being able to attract good asssistants anymore. Due to that I feel our program has no choice but to make a change. No longer are we in a situation of having to upgrade to compete. We can attract top recruits with our school’s high education level and with our state of the art facilities we now only need to upgrade our head coach. I think we could all have stood another year if this job had not inflated Amato’s head. And I still fear that when the ax falls he will embarrass us in the press as he has so often. I think we have lots of talent coming back next year enough to compete for an ACC championship but we have no hope of finishing higher than 3-5 in the ACC under Amato. We have seven years now of proof that he can do no better. I say time toupgrade and let go what was a good hire and nice man, but Amato is no longer the man we hired. Time to send him and his ego packing.

SFN: This is a FANTASTIC POST that we would like to elevate into a blog entry (along with some other comments that we have gleaned from some folks within college football). Please feel free to share more insight or specifics if you would like.

    SFN,

OUTSTANDING info to mull over. Just when I start to spend “more time” on PACKPRIDE

A couple of thoughts regarding the candidates:
    1) Bill Cowher – No need to expand upon why he’s should be our first choice other than to say one of the most successful NFL coaches of all time. He competes – and wins on a level playing field. It would also bring the Wolfpack nation tons of joy watching the talking heads who took way too much pleasure from watching our last coaching search wonder why Cowher would go to our podunk school.

    2) Paul Johnson – He’s won everywhere he’s been. The big question is his offense and will it rely too much on the run. Heck, I’d just like to see what he’d do w/ Brown, Baker, et al.

    3) Norm Chow – a highly respected lifetime OC. He is to OCs what Lombardi is HC. Simply put, he is the gold standard for OCs. He’s done a solid job in the pros too. With his reputation, he’d probably be able to bring in good assistants. Negatives – Has a reputation for disliking recruiting, and one wonders how he’d handle being the Alpha dog.

    4) Jimbo Fischer – This guy feels like a big time hire – and will likely get his chance soon. As good as he is, he’s worked in a different environment than Chow. Are we ready for another longtime assistant to take the job? Also, if successful, you’ve gotta believe his stint may be briefer than any of the above. He’s been in the SEC a long time, and would likely jump at the shot to go back to one of the big time jobs there.

    5) Mike Sherman – Interesting name to be thrown out there. He did OK w/ the Packers, but I wasn’t a huge fan of his work there. His teams were typically solid though.

    6) Dave Bennett – I saw this name out there. He’s the current coach of Coastal Carolina. My first instinct was to dismiss him since he’s at a small school. He appears to be turning them into a power even though they just started a football program a few years ago. He coached in Catawba for a long time and his kept his staff relatively intact when he moved to Conway. Remember his name, right now may be too early, but in a few years, it will probably be too late. Is he the next Dick Sheridan?

  18. old13 11/26/2006 at 3:25 PM #

“Are we ready for another longtime assistant to take the job?”

Thing is, Jimbo and Chow are both not just assistants, but are OCs. They have experience in preparing game plans, etc. as well as recruiting and teaching. CTC was never a coordinator with such responsibilities. He coached LBs and DLs and was assistant HC (administrative duties) at FSU, but never was a coordinator there.

  19. choppack1 11/26/2006 at 4:13 PM #

Valid point old13. You are still dealing w/ an unproven HC commodity when you hire an assistant who has never been the top dog. It’s just a matter of which sandwhiche you want to take a bite out of – the proven HC w/ smaller schools or OC/DC at a major university w/ no HC experience.

The longer this day goes on without a Press Conference, the more nervous I get. This has to be done today!

For mwcric: Tim Brewster is the Denver Broncos tight end coach; 40 something years old, and coached D1 football for 15 years or so. He got somewhat popular with Mack Brown. He was on Brown’s UNC and Texas’ staff, and supposedly was a recruiting guru for Brown at UNC and Texas. Although Brown has always gotten the accolades for recruiting, Brewster was “the guy”. He was reputed to be as good as their was in recruiting when coaching college football. I’m not sure about his coaching abilites, but that’s why you hire good assistants. His expertise is getting players!

    FYI to Wolfpack Nation

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has called a news conference for Monday to introduce its new football coach

Iowa State has expressed interest in at least three candidates: Central Michigan head coach Brian Kelly, Nebraska offensive coordinator Jay Norvell and San Diego coach Jim Harbaugh.
