Red or White?

General, Media, NCS Basketball

Why did you come here to read this blog? Think about that while I list some of the things that govern my reading choices:

- To find out about what is currently happening in the world.
- To learn about something that I am interested in, but don’t know much about.
- Analysis and commentaries that point out things that I never considered or from a different view point.
- Entertainment

What sorts of things do I avoid?

- Biased reporting
- Things that I have no interest in.
- Things written strictly for shock value. (Jim Rome et al)
- Lies and speculation posing as news (National Enquirer)

So where does Greg Doyel and his current little hot streak fit?

But now, after being made so miserable at N.C. State that he jumped to Arizona State, Sendek is gone. And soon, if there is a God in that Carolina blue heaven, Wolfpack basketball will follow.

Is N.C. State a place where you can win a national championship without cutting large corners here and there? It hasn’t been done — cleanly — yet.

The answer is quite simple….none of the above. Here’s another little blurb from one of Doyel’s recent rants:

…the unrealistic N.C. State fan base and juvenile N.C. State media [didn’t] understand what they had in Sendek.

They didn’t have a comedian. They didn’t have a motivational speaker. They didn’t have a guy who was going to win over media by filling their notepads with one-liners, or win over fans by making snide comments about Duke or North Carolina.

They had a great basketball coach…

We’ve all seen the Great Herb Debates. Even Herb’s most ardent supporters never claimed that he was a great coach. So why is Doyel?

I believe that the answer is quite simple. Doyel is little more than a message board troll that now has his own column on CBS. Here’s a definition that I think describes Doyel’s recent efforts quite nicely:

Troller is looking for a response…ANY response, and he will chum the waters with complaints, insults, compliments, and inflammatory tidbits hoping that someone…ANYONE, will take the bait.

When Doyel was writing for the Charlotte Observer, he used to post infrequently at statefans.com. So we know that he reads the various message boards…probably from all of the ACC schools. I believe that he is now trolling for NC State fans (along with UNC and Duke fans) to increase the hit rate on his web page.

You are playing into his hands whenever you:

- Fire off your flame-throwing e-mail retort;
- Dissect his stupidity and show him how wrong he is;
- Write complaints to his editors;
- Throw his stupidity back in his face and ask him if he wants red or white wine with his crow; or
- Visit his web page and read his drivel.

CBS and Doyel don’t care WHY you are visiting his page. They don’t care if you like what he has to say. They just want you to visit:

- CBS wants hits on their webpage for their advertising fees.
- Doyel wants hits so they he can find a bigger and better job.

It takes intelligence, insight, and skill as a writer to produce columns worth reading on a regular schedule. It takes very little to churn out garbage that skews the truth in an attempt to enrage a portion of the reading audience. Do you think I’m being harsh? Well answer these questions:

- Has Doyel ever told you something about the ACC that you didn’t already know?
- Do you find him generally entertaining?
- Do you think he provides a unique analysis or view point on a given issue?

If you answered “yes? to one or more of these questions…then by all means continue to read his tripe if you find him interesting.

If you’re like me, and answered “no? to all three questions, then here’s a little more free advice (just my thing today)…IGNORE HIM!
- Don’t waste time refuting his silliness.
- Don’t waste time getting mad.
- DON’T GO TO HIS WEB PAGE.
- Just ignore him. He probably won’t go away….but does it (or Doyel) really matter?

AWESOME ENTRY!! Thanks for pointing it out.

  2. Rick Says:

I would go one step farther.
Do not even go to the page to read his drivel. The more hits he gets the better his bosses think he is doing and the more revenue he can claim.

The worst thing for a troll like him is to ignore him completely and utterly. Do not even mention that name.

    Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do not even go to the page to read his drivel.

Thanks, I forgot that and just added it. You will note that I didn’t provide links to any of his crap.

  5. Packof82Cards Says:

Good job VaWolf, it’s real easy to let some of that get under your skin. I think most of us are a little sensitive right now as well. That doesn’t help matters.

  6. O Cain Says:

Doyle is all about getting attention, he used to be a regular guest on WFNZ here in Charlotte. Three years ago he was bashing Sendek saying Sendek did not develop players. That a high profile coach at major school like NC State had to be able to deal with the media and Sendek was grossly inept at that. Doyle got his shot by claiming he broke the ACC expansion story, he didn’t know nothing he just was mouthing off and happened to be right. Doyle will say anything to further his career. he washing bashing Sendek when he thought it would get him attention, now he praising Sendek for the same reason. Plus he says we never won a championship doing it the right way. There no violations of our program in 83. Only years after that did they find a couple players sold shoes and tickets. NCAA investigator stated no program had ever been as throughly investigated as N C State/Valvano and had come out that clean and vindicated of any major violations. Now those players would only be made to sit out a game like Felton had to For UNC/Felton violating NCAA rules by participating in a unsanctioned event. So is Doyle saying UNC’s last championship was not clean either, since UNC was caught violating NCAA rules!! In fact NC State was placed on probabtion in the 70’s for a similare violation as Felton committed when Thompson participated in an unsanctioned workout/event. Amazing how the times have changed, but idiots like Doyle remain the same!!

  7. O Cain Says:

Another example of Doyle being an idiot. Any of you catch his article a couple of months ago on Everett Case? He bascially called Case a post season choker. Didn’t mention the years Case turned down post season play. Then used to article to remind everyone of the gambling scandle involving State basketball players. He forgot to mention the other school and its players caught in the scandle, the school was UNC Chapel Hill and its players. I get tired of hearing people claim UNC has always done things clean never had any sanctions or wrong doing. Just totally untrue!!! UNC player and a couple State players admitted to it. Dixie Classic as it was then was cancelled, Southern Conference went up in smoke and the scandle pretty much put the formation of the ACC in motion. So next time someone bellows the UNC we clean crap ask them about the gambling scandle or at least tell them about it.

  8. dabigdog Says:

Doyel wants to be the story, not to cover it.

For any true journalist, that should be an embarrassment.

  9. dabigdog Says:

I posted this in another thread…

Doyel is an idiot. He did this same kind of crap when he was at the charlotte observer and should not be relied upon for any kind of information that doesn’t relate in some way to Carolina.

Doyel is also an opportunist. He moved on from Charlotte when he had the chance and in my mind was one of the biggest reasons why the Charlotte Observer has one of the worst sports sections of any metro newspaper in the country. Guys, I’m not making that one up either. Ask anyone in newspapers, especially sports, and they will tell you that the observer’s sports section is a joke full of lazy reporters who think that the story hasn’t been broken until they write about it.

Doyel is a perfect example of the problem with sports coverage as it relates to newspapers and mass media in general. All the folks in these fields either went to Michigan, Syracuse or North Carolina. It’s all part of a big club and Doyel will never write ANYTHING positive about N.C. State or anyone that’s not carolina.

  10. NCSU94GRAD Says:

“We don’t understand what we had in Sendek” Give me a freaking break. We understand this….after 10 years of Herb we have the same number of ACC Championships that we had when he arrived and the furthest we’ve managed to go is the sweet sixteen (once), and we have regularly been handed our butt on the court and in recruiting by UNC, Duke, and even Wake Forest. We deserve better and we won’t settle for anything less than a coach that can take us where we need to go…period! All this crap about not wanting to compete with Roy and K….we want a coach that at his first press conference states “To be the man, you got to beat the man and I am ready to take the gloves off and get it on!” YES!!

  11. O Cain Says:

Doyle kisses up to ACC commissioner for the breakthrough story on ACC expansion. ACC commissioner just happens to be Swofford former UNC AD. Doyle going to kiss UNC —– just like dabigdog say.

  12. ApexWolf Says:

Doyel had to leave the area b/c of extra marital activities

  13. NCSU4LIFE Says:

Great job on this. I owe you a beer if we ever meet.

  14. WestCoast Says:

Doyel who? Cal who? Well said. It’s gametime, let’s find someone that fits.

  15. beowolf Says:

My introduction to Doyel was his column years ago about how he couldn’t find John Simonds using a Yahoo search, so he went on to suggest that Valvano had his Mafia pals kill him.

I’m serious. This was during the days of The Strutting Wolf, and we awarded him the Dead Horse Award for ridiculous journalism. We received a nasty, juvenile missive from Doyel on account of it. Like all provocateurs, he can dish it out — but when it comes to taking it, he yelps and whines through his nose like a whipped cur.

  16. 74Pack Says:

Wonder why Gopack doesn’t offer a tab on Pack basketball history, including the nat’l championship runs? Seems it might even be worthwhile from a recruiting perspective…
    Nevermind, I figured out why…

  17. GoldenChain Says:

    Doyel is a tool.

  18. RAWFS Says:

I’m swiping the picture and putting a link back to this entry. So true this is.

  19. JTO Says:

Fantastic advice. Never again am I going to CBS Sportsline as long as he is an emplyee, period. A couple jogs down memory lane with Doyel on board the Charlotte Observer….

    1) Rivers takes our football team to the Gator Bowl for the first time in quite some time. As we celebrate our recent success, Doyel proceeds to write on the front page how Virginia and G Tech were robbed by NC State because they had beaten us at the end of the season. Of course he failed to mention that we had been a top fifteen team for the entire season and ended the season ranked well above both Tech and Virginia in the national polls….which I would think might be important to the Gator Bowl committee.

    2) NC State absolutely destroys Clemson on a Thursday evening ESPN game. The next day Doyel proceeds to write a two page article on how ridiculous it is that Clemson is considered a football school. That they haven’t done anything in the past decade…and he went on and on. Digs on Clemson to get to State.

Doyel clearly found a formula that works for him. All we can do is ignore him going forward and recognize that he clearly lacks any journalistic integrity or morals.

He states that ran Sendek out of town because he wasn’t better than Carolina or Duke. Does anyone in their right minds actually believe this to be true???? All we asked for to be able to have a chance to win… a chance. As Statefansnation has pointed out that the late Jim Valvano would say, “You have to put yourself in a position to win.” That’s why we felt we had to move on. Doyel makes no effort to report truth and for that I hope we can ignore everything he writes going forward. He should be ashamed…

  20. Pack92 Says:

Doyel was an abused child. You actually need a pair to have extra-marital affairs. Whoops, Forgot! Doyel went to UNX. He does not need the pair, his “partner” already has them!

  21. StateFans Says:

Did Doyel really go to Carolina? For some reason I thought that he went to Florida?

Regardless, we thought that it was pretty funny that his article last week about “NC State’s Demise” was so inaccurate that he literally had to change its title to reflect the fact that we did not FIRE Herb Sendek as the title inaccurately claimed.

  22. GoldenChain Says:

He did not go to unx.

  23. Cardiff Giant Says:

Doyel is an asshat virgin who lives in his mother’s basement and has Dungeons and Dragons games. I know someone very close to the family and they had to pull Doyel out of his public high school because he was “terrorized” by the “bad kids.” Take it to the bank.

  24. JTO Says:

He’s unaffiliated with the ACC…that’s why he has no respect for what it stands for.

  25. Wilmpack Says:

Doyel is a very small man who hides behind his keyboard and prays that people don’t recognize him when he actually goes out in…gulp….Public!

  1. [...] We’re not very big fans of the author of the article, Jeff Goodman. Despite the fact that his name is listed on Pack Pride’s website as a former author for the site, Goodman has been publicly critical of NC State fans in the past. He also seems to have a love affair with Herb Sendek that is similar to that of Gregg Dickhead of CBS Sportsline. In a recent piece in recent piece about the greatness of Pac-1o basketball Goodman said the following: Oregon State (RPI, No. 259) and Arizona State (304) are the only teams outside of the Top 80 in the RPI, but that won’t last long in Tempe. Look for the Sun Devils to be much-improved in the next year or two now that Herb Sendek has taken over for Rob Evans. [...]

On this particular incident, I can remember the exact moment when my distaste for “sports journalists” began…the spring of 1983. I read idiotic report after useless commentary seemingly without end about the NCAAT that year. It quickly became obvious that intelligence, originality, and insight was not required for a career in sports journalism.
