The Beginning of the End

Well, today we saw it with our own eyes. There is no sugar coating things, there is no denying the reality. Chuck Amato has been revealed as a fraud, a charlatan, a snake oil salesman. We have the talent, we don’t have the heart or the guts to be a champion. And that can be traced directly to Chuck the Clown, with his doofus sunglasses and his Dorothy-like red shoes. As a gentleman in the parking lot pointed out today – we are a victim of our own hype – too much show and too little basic Football 101. It’s all swagger and fireworks and scoreboard intros. And we’ve flushed a great opportunity down the toilet. A team takes on the personality of its coach all right, and the emperor has no clothes. We’ve made too much of an investment in this program to lose to a vastly outgunned UNC team. In fact, it’s a good thing UNC played so badly in the first half – against a legitimate opponent playing decently, State loses by 3 or 4 touchdowns. When you get outcoached by John Bunting 2 years in a row, it’s time to hang up the whistle. Even the lemmings who call the WPTF post-game show aren’t hiding from that.

So what do we do? For 2008, my hope for the nation is drafting a centrist, pragmatic problem solver (Governor Mark Warner of Virginia), to save us from a “lesser of two evils” Bill Frist/Hillary Clinton match-up. For the NC State football program, it’s Draft Norm Chow. Somebody reserve the internet url now, because Norm would kill to come back. Maybe it would work, maybe not – but he couldn’t screw it up any worse than Dorothy.

It’s a dark day, my friends. I am an attorney, who works with many UNC grads, including several delusional ones. Nobody thought UNC could possibly win this game. Nobody thought they could even keep it close. Instead, they won, should have won, could even have won by 20+ if they weren’t as sloppy as us in the first half.

How do you play a game with your bitter rival, a team that beat you on a controversial call the year before, and only play hard for 5 minutes out of 60? It boggles the mind. CHUCK MUST GO.

Three years ago I was villified for indicating that we had reached the
high water mark after we had gone 8-0 and laid an egg with GT in Raleigh.
Since that game we are 15-16. The losses to inferior teams continue, the
bad play selection in big games continue and we have not found a QB
despite four years of knowing that one had to be developed. The big
question is will it take a fall to Duke’s level before things change?

  2. newswolf 09/25/2005 at 7:33 AM #

You act like you are upset that you were “villified”, you are just some dork message board poster. Get over yourself. We are
    already at Duke’s level.

“Norm would kill to come back” Really? Is that opinion or more? You really shouldn’t make such comments.

  4. BJD95 09/25/2005 at 8:10 AM #

It’s speculation, but given that (i) it’s well-known that Chow wants to be a head coach VERY badly, (ii) he is on record as having really enjoyed his time here; and (iii) time is running short – I think it’s very reasonable speculation. He would most certainly come back.

Folks, being an NCSU graduate (’98), I have seen the angst put forth by the Mike O’Cain teams for many years. I suffered through those losses to Carolina, big wins over Syracuse and Florida State. But what I can’t understand is how no one else is making the comparison between Amato and O’Cain. Here’s why. O’Cain is better than Amato. I hate to say it, but O’Cain at least could win some really big games without Philip at QB. Amato has lost too many games which this talented group of individuals should not have lost. He wants to create another Florida State around here and he hasn’t even succeeded in creating another Michigan State around here. Oh, and Chuck, building a program usually includes WINNING FOOTBALL GAMES!! Beating your opponents is crucial in establishing yourself as a football program. Saying the recruiting classes are nationally ranked or comparable to other national powers means nothing when the product on the field consistently gets out played by inferior opponents who can’t recruit. Hats off to John Bunting also. Here’s a guy who will do both things which we now want. He’ll single-handedly destroy the UNC football program and he will get rid of Chuck Amato simultaneously. Bloggers, I hope all of you are as irate as I am. Chuck should be out of a job. Immmediately. NOW!

I absolutely agree that we should go after Norm Chow if we fire Chuck. My only concern is that Norm may not be eager to replace a friend of his. But definitely worth a shot.

Why are we at Duke’s level newswolf? Can you express yourself without
    insults?

We don’t have leaders on this team. The key to our early successes under Chuck were guys like Rivers, Cotchery, Burnette, Holt. Guys who worked hard and had great character. Who leads on the field for us this year?

This is not to absolve the coaches. Amato even joked about not recruiting guys like Burnette anymore. This might be why we look confused and rudderless on the field.

With tremendous fan support and sellout crowds, we are 1-6 v. D-1A opponents at home since the start of 2004.

There’s little reason to be optimistic anymore. Most of the competent players on this year’s squad – Tramain, TJ, Mario, Manny, Hoyte, Hudson – will be gone in 2006. Any in-state recruiting edge is history.

Unlike some other people on this site and others I really like Chuck and I think he has done a great job of building this program up. But at the same time it is very easy to see that he is now very much over his head in the coaching aspect of the game. Why are FSU and Miami so good all these years? Yes, they have amazing talent, but not much more than NCSU, it comes down to coaching. Bobby Bowden hasn’t really coached FSU in years and yet they can still cake walk into 8 or 9 wins. This is because he has a strong base of coaches around him that have been with the school forever (ie Mickey Andrews). Chuck’s biggest problem is not being able to keep the same coaches around him year in and year out. This continued consistancy creates discipline because the system stays the same. At NCSU they have changed coaches so many times I even get confused on who is coaching what. Along the same lines do you really think the players are even afraid of Chuck? I was thinking on Sat. whos head would’ve Reggie Herring taken off first with all the missed tackles as a second rate team marched down the field in the 2nd half. The fear is not there anymore, the players are not afriad of messing up anymore, and most importantly the opposing team is not afraid to play NCSU anymore.

I’ve been ready to get rid of Herb (and Lee for presiding over that mess) ever since the 13-16 debacle of 2001, but I supported Chuck & felt like the disappointments of the last 2 seasons were but a bump in his road to eventually making NCSU a regular top 25 program. I even rationalized that last year’s loss in Chapel Hill helped Bunting (their version of Herb) keep his job a little longer, which seemed like a good thing in the long run. But, much like George W., Chuck has turned out to be a fraud (although I’m proud to say I was never fooled by the former). Not just b/c of this last game, of course, but it simply added an exclamation point to the shortcomings of the past 2 years, not to mention some missed opportunities during the Rivers era. In his post-game interview, Chuck said he was embarrassed and promised to correct the problems (esp. the penalties), but we’ve heard that before. The team does reflect the personality of its coach, which in this case amounts to a lot of bravado w/a bit of trash talking & nothing to back it up. It’s a shame Herb couldn’t take advantage of Doherty’s debacle to gain some ground on the Heels in b-ball, & Chuck can’t distance his program from Bunting’s while they’re down. It seems to me Chuck’s recruiting edge has evaporated and, as TVP noted, there’s little reason now to be optimistic about 2006 & beyond w/out a change in leadership.

Chuck Amato will never be fired, IMO anyway.

Why? Lee Fowler won’t fire anybody, and Oblinger is not Mary Anne Fox.

Someone said that no-one is comparing Amato to O’Cain, but we did precisely that yesterday:

“As for Chuck Amato, I am beginning to wonder if Monte Kiffin was a better head coach. Kiffen was flamboyant, as is Amato, but Kiffen also maintained order amongst his players. Amato clearly does not, and until he does, his record will continue to fall behind the man he replaced, Mike O’Cain. O’Cain was fired for not getting the job done — and he was 41-40 in ACC play after the 1999 season. Amato’s record after yesterday is 20-22. Looking forward to the rest of the season, unless things change — and quickly — look for O’Cain’s record to look better and better when compared to Amato’s…and O’Cain was summarily dismissed.”

If Reggie Herring is such a great coach, why did he get 70 points put on him by USC?
I think our defense last year was smoke and mirrors. The QB play in the ACC last year
was AWFUL. The games we won or the D played well in: VT (freshman WR corp, no RB),
MD (awful QB), FSU (awful QB), Wake (hey it is Wake). The teams that had good QB’s lit
    our ass up.

  13. Slader4881 09/26/2005 at 11:29 AM #

Herring is a good coach and that USC team could play some NFL teams tough. Plus Arkansas doesn’t have the same defensive talent level we had or have at State. Point is we have no intensity with our coaches. Herring was merely an example because he always was on the verge of exploding even when he coached at Clemson. At the game Derrick Morris makes stupid mistakes arugues with the coach and gets put BACK IN the game. It’s like they are waiting for him to turn into Orlando Pace at some point just on High School hype he had from recruiting boards.

Secondly our D was that good last year. Think about the fact they were on the field all of the time with the lack of offense and the turnovers. Just because the other team did not have a great QB does not mean the D should get zero credit. They kept us in every game with their backs against the wall every time they were on the field. If they didn’t do that we would’ve got beat by 3 TDs every game.

For the past three years I have been great concerned about the NCSU football program. Following the 2002 season and the big bowl win over ND, I thought (foolishly, as it now turns out) that we had turned the corner and that Coach Amato was going to do what he said he was going to do when he took the job: lead us to ACC titles and beyond. But alas, it has not been. The 2003 was a huge let down; last year was a major disaster; and who knows how this season is going to wind up. It is my opinion that the loss to the University of No Class (UNC) has runied this season. In order to salvage any semblance of respectability, we would have to win out and I just do not see that happening.

I find it to absolutely inexcusable to lose a game to an inferior opponent. I realize that with the parity of the NFL any given team can beat any other given team on any given Sunday; but this is not the NFL and we have considerably more talent than UNC. I doubt that they have one player who could even start for NCSU. So, then how do you lose to a team like that? Again, it is inexcusable. What I am saying goes far beyond the humiliation of losing to a team with a fan base of such arrogance as you find with UNC. This loss points out a fundamental problem with the NCSU football progam: our Head Coach is not doing the job that he was brought to Raleigh to do.

Coach Amato either needs to get this program to where he said he was going to get, or else, he must go.

When MOC was canned I wrote a letter to Les practically begging him to not hire Chuck Amato. I had seen way too much of the gamesmanship and bluster from Florida State to be comfortable with it coming to Raleigh. Well, after a couple of years I was happily eating my words, jumping on the Chuckwagon, and loving Wolfpack football again…except for those nagging games against Carolina. Even the ones we won we struggled in, and we lost two that we should have easily dominated. The debacle of the entire 2004 season left a horrible taste in my mouth, but I was willing to bite my tongue. Five years is enough, Chuck was too embarrassed to let it happen again, he’ll get it right, yada yada, I told myself because the Gator Bowl win had deposited a big chunk of change in the bank of good will for Chuck.

The deposit has all been withdrawn. The account is empty. Chuck bounced a big fat check Saturday afternoon, and now I’m thinking I was right all along six years ago. I’d rather have been wrong, because eating my words didn’t make me half as sick to my stomach as this football program has done. Believe me, I get no pleasure out of saying “I told me so.”

FWIW, the guy I wanted then is a guy I’d still take right now in a heartbeat. He’s a WNC mountain boy like myself, from Banner Elk in Avery County. At that time he was coaching little ol’ Georgia Southern. He was a well-kept secret. Unfortunately, he’s not a secret any more. Paul Johnson of the US Naval Academy.

We certainly have enough RBs to make Mr. Johnson happy.

Fortunately I was at UVa watching the Wahoos wax Duke Saturday and didn’t have to watch the embarrassing spectacle that NCSU football has become. State supposedly has consistently recruited some of the best classes in the ACC, yet we can’t really be sure of winning against any Division 1 opponent. Obviously Amato and his staff are a joke. Basketball, of course, is just as bad. I am a NCSU grad that now has one kid at UVa, one planning on going to UNC, and I own season tickets to Virginia. Hate to say it but as a former State season-ticket holder who has always “bled Wolfpack red, the disappointments of the last several years have “bled all the Wolfpack out of me. I think I have finally had enough. Can’t wait to get the yearly phone calls from State asking for donations. I will enjoy that conversation.

  21. TVP 09/26/2005 at 7:57 PM #

Well, its not like UVa is doing much better…At least we don’t give our mediocre coaches lifetime contracts.

Ive recently heard for an insider close to mack brown, that he is anxious to get back to UNC as the next athletic
director, of course after he wins this year’s national championship. Don’t worry about coach Bunting after this year.
When mack comes to town, it’ll be a football school, an open ended check book for the football program. SO what does this have to do with NC state u ask? Chuck has put NC State on the college football map. Thursday night ESPN games, saturday afternoon TV time, COllege game day picking NC State in their score lineups, flashy red signature shoes, the tacky foakleys..its all about image, and Chuck should be on the cover of GQ Illustrated. CHuck also got you a new football center, badly needed at NC state. Norm Chow came to NC state and couldnt believe a single coach didnt even have a
computer to work with, except the front door receptionist. Keep in mind, coach’s arent hired to have a 50/50 season. Thier hired to outperform their competition and Chuck has done well with the NC State program. Being a Carolina fan, I say keep Chuck, hes great for the ACC, Great for the sport of college football, and who knows, might even start coaching mens basketball over there in teh off season. SO, hang tight wolf pack fans. Enjoy the ride and support CHuck.

  23. Sam Martin 10/14/2005 at 7:16 AM #

Chuck Amato just can’t cut the mustard. He just doesn’t have it. He’s had six years, filled with hype, one really good season (that included 3 losses) and one really good quarterback. Our team is plagued by penalties and turnovers — over and over, game after game. Either those 85 young men just happen to all have butterfingers and rebellious natures, or there is a *deep* coaching problem. Creating a “walk of champions” ritual is great — if you’re actually winning championships.

Chuck has had time, and he hasn’t delivered. Let’s seize the moment to bring in a better coach while we still have the advantage of improved facilities and fan support. To the powers that be: Wait until the end of the season, then fire Chuck Amato.

Well after a long ride home to charlotte after that poor excuse of a game against clemson, i made a clear choice in my head. We need to use all of this booster money for one purpose bring in a real coach like Butch Davis. He loves the south, college football, and state has made a recruiting home out of florida. These are all great reasons why we should join in and ban amato from ever coaching in raleigh again. I refuse to take my trip from charlotte again until we can prove to be for real as a football program not the laughing stock of the acc

  25. Mike 10/17/2005 at 7:07 PM #

It is quite simple. Anyone who knows football knows the problems. Chuck and his staff of the season are fooling us all and laughing all the way to the bank. Trestman as OC? Give me a break. One would think the ESPN crew is being paid to praise Trestman. “Trestman has been in the NFL for 22 years, what a great steal for NC State to get himâ€?. He has been with 10 teams in 22 years because the NFL teams run him out of town. He had one good year in 22 taking the Raiders to the Super Bowl, probably in spite of him, not becuase of him. We had 1st and goal a couple times against Clemson, threw 1 pass into the end zone, several short passes at the line of scrimmage. It is a regualr occurrence. Anyone who watches film, sorry video, knows what we will run before we run it. I sit there and call the plays we will run, and sure enough, I am usually right. If I can do that, so can opposing coaches paid to know what we will do. Every year, clock management at end of game or half costs us. I remember a couple years ago, opposing team driving late, already in FG range, and we let the clock run with 3 TO’s remaining. We will have 3 TO’s when we get the ball back down by 3. Guess what, we got the ball back wiht 3 TO’s and 7 seconds left. Coaching is awful, has been awful, and as long as we turnover assistants every year, will continue to be awful. Fire Amato? The head coach is an administrator – the assistants make the difference. Chuck is great for publicity, emotion, and recruiting. Keep Chuck IF he can keep assistants long term. if Chuck is too difficult to work for and the assistants are forced away, then Chuck needs to go too.
