The diamond has been pretty kind to both the Wolfpack men and Wolfpack women as of late.

Mark Gottfried is not the only NC State coach who can unearth a transfer gem. Shawn Rychcik plucked junior Maggie Hawkins from Hofstra; Hawkins homered in the bottom of the seventh to send State to its first super regional. Before Hawkins walked off on a 1-0 pitch to lead off the seventh, she had knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI single in the fourth. The Pack downed upstart Fordham, a team that eliminated host James Madison earlier in the double elimination tournament, 2-1 to advance to softball’s sweet 16 for the first time in program history.

Senior Emily Weiman went the distance to pick up her 31st win of the season, allowing just one unearned run in seven innings. Weiman scattered four hits, walked one, and struck out eight. Weiman extended her program record for strikeouts in a season to 315.

Fellow senior Renada Davis had a hit in three ABs to extend her hitting streak to 15 games.

The Pack outscored their opponents 16-6 in their three games in a regional that included Weiman’s one-hit shutout over the host Dukes.

Hawkins had three of the team’s five hits to raise her average to .247 on the season. The homer was her 11th of the year, good for fourth on the team, and she upped her RBI total to 35, a total that also ranks fourth. For the regional, she was 5-for-9 with three runs scored, a pair of homers, and four RBI.

The Pack will head west to face tournament #2 seed Oregon in the best of three super regional. Florida State is also through to the super regional round from the ACC.

Congrats to the women! Another AD Yow home run. Great hire of Coach Rychcik a few years ago. First, he won an ACC title. Now he has gotten to their first Super Regional.

Good luck out in Nike-land next week against Oregon!

Congrats to the women’s softball team, and wishing for more in Oregon. While hoping the men do their job here at home in the ACC tourney, minus the costly errors. Go Pack!

Rychcik’s street cred was nonpareil long before the hire…World class.

It was a shame that Navas was allowed to run such a lazy staff for so long, after a nice start. Personal.

That was then, this is now, my kid is playing in Europe for Euros, and Miss Emily is, for sure, the real deal.

I see the roll they’re on taking them to OK City.
