UNC-CH Spring Game attendance: friends and family only (updated Sunday p.m. with lots of bonus pictures)

As you can see in the picture, those super-loyal UNC-CH football fans turned out literally by the dozens for their Spring Game, creating what must have been a big-time football atmosphere!  How did the wide receivers hear the signals over all the crowd noise?  Recruits must have been impressed.

Let’s all take bets on the “announced attendance.”

***********
7:25 p.m. Saturday update.  Predictably ludicrous crowd estimates are spinning out of Chapel Hill.
“10,000” was the announced to the crowd.  Hilariously, the News and Observer coverage goes even further.
in a 45-minute controlled scrimmage of about 50 snaps in front of a crowd UNC estimated at 15,500 at Kenan Stadium.
… one of four quarterbacks to see action in front of 15,500 fans on an overcast day in Chapel Hill.

**********

Sunday a.m. update.

For everyone wondering if perhaps the picture of just one side of the stadium gave an unfair representation, here you go.  Remember, this is what a Kenan Stadium crowd of 15,500 looks like according to our local media. (The “15,500” estimate was repeated in today’s N & O print edtion).   I don’t even think an estimate was necessary.  An actual head count was possible.  The N & O and WRAL should be ashamed of themselves.

and

and here is one from the N & O.  They must have used this one to calculate the 15,000 number.

These last two are from genefoto.  The one with the cheerleader is a shot of the endzone not pictured thus far, giving us 360 degree coverage.  You will notice that there are not 15,000 people in that endzone.

Andrew Johnson swears it was 12,000 and we should take his word for it. 🙂

The twitter conversation on this was great…
He makes a comment about the game, SFN asks for visual proof of attendance via picture, and 15 minutes later we are told game is over so no pictures available.

So I went to a unc-ch baseball game a week ago (long story)… my biggest takeaway was that their campus, at least a vast majority of it, is simply hideous. I’ve lived in Carrboro for 5 years now, but I try to stay away from campus… but the whole “beautiful setting” thing is simply complete crap. The area around their stadium is atrocious… there’s just nothing pretty about it. Ah, the power of a journalism school… they can create an alternate reality that people end up believing.

All seriousness – if you drop someone in about 90% of unc-ch’s campus, or about 90% of NC State’s campus – that person can’t tell you which one they’re on.

The crowd was small because it was Admission Only If You Haven’t Accepted Help From a Tutor Day..

    butch’s final days..

  7. NCSU88 04/09/2011 at 7:16 PM #

My guesstimate looking at the picture is about 3500 tops.

  8. genefoto 04/09/2011 at 7:21 PM #

Unlike last year, they did have seating on both sides of the stadium.
No fan count from me. I have to review my pics.

I am impressed! If that is over 10,000 fans, the stadium must hold about 200,000. yet another thing for them to be proud of.

Bingo, woth. There’s about four blocks of decent-looking campus there, if that. Most of the campus is concrete and the hospital. There was a buzz around campus today with lots of people walking around (Greek orgs. were busy). I’d say a better turnout than 2 years ago, probably around 7500.

I guess the NCAA is just hoping we will all just forget they’re under investigation. They need to go ahead and drop the bomb on them.

The picture was taken between quarters, so most of the fans had gone to the bathroom. Also, I heard that it was hard to attract many of the Heels’ fans because the Jonas Brothers were giving a concert at the Dean Dome at the same time.

I don’t doubt we will, but let’s all put an extra effort in making it next week to our spring scrimmage game. Show them holes where the real fans are.

    ^ If that were true….

    Estimated crowd of 15,500
+ Between quarters/Most fans in bathroom
    + Picture posted above

= Some really big damn bathrooms

** Only problem is that this picture that was taken between quarters and shows all of those missing people in the bathroom and all of that jazz…..also shows the players on the field running plays.

Now admittedly, maybe I’m mistaken about what goes on between quarters.

Alas, my joke went unheeded, Wuf.

haha.. anyone been to that concrete jungle of a stadium. it is one of the worst i’ve ever been to. went to the last two matchup = priceless. the problem was.. i’m about six feet tall, had two buds that are in the six fo range.. they couldn’t even sit down.. not that we ever really sit down at a nc state game.. couple of unc asses sitting behind us whined about it.. we couldn’t even sit comfortably in the seats!

    WHAT A DUMP!

i wish this picture had the new pile of concrete/sh## building in it.. i wonder what it looks like now?

uncheat fans don’t care about football anymore now that they know zeller and henson are coming back. they won’t until they win A game. they suck as fans!

I know I can never take my daughter to Kenan again. Sat close to the student section. Their most original chant was F*** State, over and over and over again. “F” was appropriate. That’s the grade I give their fans for manners and for originality.

  19. Wufpacker 04/09/2011 at 8:40 PM #

@Howler, not at all. I got your funny, just kinda ran with it. After re-reading my post I guess it does sound like I thought you were serious I guess. Sorry ’bout that.

  20. Wufpacker 04/09/2011 at 8:44 PM #

@Wolfy_79, it probably looks pretty much as you described. Like a pile of concrete and/or sh##.

  21. Wufpacker 04/09/2011 at 8:52 PM #

@Howler, small price to pay in order to properly indoctrinate her into the ‘Pack. Everyone should be privileged enough to see the dark side get taken apart piece by piece on their own turf. The profanity might not be pleasant, but the tradeoff is priceless.

Of course the funny thing is that if you could ask them, every one of those folks in that student section would deny that we are their rivals.

  22. imawolf 04/09/2011 at 9:22 PM #

Hmmm… if each section has 2000 seats, which mathematically is not possible based upon the the maximum capacity of the stadium…but just saying, if each section could hold 2,000 people, then perhaps there were 6,000 people there…….at best…counting the players and staff.

“My guesstimate looking at the picture is about 3500 tops.”

    Probably 3500 bottoms as well.
