UNC-CH Spring Game attendance: friends and family only (updated Sunday p.m. with lots of bonus pictures)

As you can see in the picture, those super-loyal UNC-CH football fans turned out literally by the dozens for their Spring Game, creating what must have been a big-time football atmosphere!  How did the wide receivers hear the signals over all the crowd noise?  Recruits must have been impressed.

Let’s all take bets on the “announced attendance.”

***********
7:25 p.m. Saturday update.  Predictably ludicrous crowd estimates are spinning out of Chapel Hill.
“10,000” was the announced to the crowd.  Hilariously, the News and Observer coverage goes even further.
in a 45-minute controlled scrimmage of about 50 snaps in front of a crowd UNC estimated at 15,500 at Kenan Stadium.
… one of four quarterbacks to see action in front of 15,500 fans on an overcast day in Chapel Hill.

**********

Sunday a.m. update.

For everyone wondering if perhaps the picture of just one side of the stadium gave an unfair representation, here you go.  Remember, this is what a Kenan Stadium crowd of 15,500 looks like according to our local media. (The “15,500” estimate was repeated in today’s N & O print edtion).   I don’t even think an estimate was necessary.  An actual head count was possible.  The N & O and WRAL should be ashamed of themselves.

and

and here is one from the N & O.  They must have used this one to calculate the 15,000 number.

These last two are from genefoto.  The one with the cheerleader is a shot of the endzone not pictured thus far, giving us 360 degree coverage.  You will notice that there are not 15,000 people in that endzone.

“Liars and Cheats”, they earned both descriptions. This is just another example. 15,500 Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha. Actually the estimate was less than expected. I expected 20,000 but then I expected at least 6-8,000 to actually attend – not 3,500 to 4,000.

As much as I despise these idiots, wouldn’t we need to see a picture of the home field side of the stadium before dismissing any crowd estimates? My experience at CF is that the majority of fans are on the west/home side for the spring game. The picture above only shows the visitors side at Kenan.

Even Brett Friedlander of the Star News said it was “3,000 maybe. About the same kind of crowd you’d get at a HS state championship game here.” That’s a direct quote.

Here’s the re-tweet from when he said it:

One thing to consider before believing any estimates of attendance from Chapel Hill. You don’t go to Carolina if you’re good at math.

Guys, I like to kick the Heels when they’re down as much as the next guy, but let’s at least be honest when we do so. It’s plain to me that this isn’t a picture from the spring game. Clearly, it’s a picture from the end of the UNC-NC State game last year.

  6. Wufpacker 04/10/2011 at 1:13 AM #

    @PIR, LOL. Good one, indeed.

@OldMcD, what’s with the red mustang wearing the “NC” logo? Are you just trying to insult SMU, or what???

As far as the crowd on the home side of the stands, you can see the first few rows of a few of the sections at the bottom of the photo on the left. While it’s not proof of anything, that particular area doesn’t look any more crowded than the same area(s) on the opposite side of the field.

My favorite quote from the WRAL piece is the one OldMcD quoted in his blog entry above:

” ….one of four quarterbacks to see action in front of 15,500 fans on an overcast day in Chapel Hill. ”

Do you suppose that maybe there was a flag football game going on somewhere on campus today? One which was within view of many, many dorms such that it was “in front of 15,500 fans” in Chapel Hill? At least then it’s technically possible.

My Carolina graduate wife chuckled at this entry and agrees with the community that it was only a few thousand people. She also agrees that Kenan is a dump. She might have a UNC degree, but at least she still has some objective common sense.

After I graduated from NCSU in 1987 I attended school at UNC-CH for 7 years and then lived next to the University for 15 years. One thing they have done to the campus is over build. It has taken some of the ambiance away from the university. Because they have no more land they either have to build the campus miles away or just fill in. They decided to fill in.
For example: Twenty years ago you could ride down Mason Farm road and feel like you were in the middle of the woods. It runs behind the UNC Hospital, married student housing and then behind the Dean Dome. It ultimately brings you out just above Manning Drive on the 15-501 bypass. They have cut most of the trees down and put in 8 and 10 story buildings. It looks nice I guess, but it seems like you are at just another university.
My point is the ambiance of the school is fading because of the tremendous in filling going on.

You can literally count the people in the photo.

With a pic of the other side, a VERY official count could be provided.
Provide me the other pic & I’ll do the official count myself, Genephoto.

15,500 including roaches, ants and mosquitos maybe

I feel very let down by all of you. Clearly you have forgotten the 12th man in that stadium is not the fickle fans. But the ultra loyal majestic Pine trees that make that stadium the latest wonder of the modern world. Clearly between the fans and those super awesome trees that only grow around that magical field the counts are correct.

  13. choppack1 04/10/2011 at 8:21 AM #

If there was 15,500 at that game, then our spring game last year had about 50k. Give them credit though – they don’t try to hit the nail right on the head and under-estimate the crowd like we do. They give themselves the benefit of the doubt.

  14. PackerInRussia 04/10/2011 at 8:35 AM #

It’s real easy. Once you start counting egos, you get to 15,000 fast.

can you re-post those links, scotchzombie? I don’t think those links work because of the ellipses in there.

If you counted the men’s vaginas and the women’s testicles you might get to 15,500.

Such a skewed set of pictures… Where are the pictures of the endzone seating? And I would like to see the scoreboard when these were taken. I assume it was about 2.5 hours either before kickoff or after the game was over and there are over 10k people sitting in the endzone. This is the obvious seating choice so that one does not have to chose which side to root for in the scrimmage. Give them a break. They need this!!!

  19. Plz2BStateFan 04/10/2011 at 11:46 AM #

    You can individually count everyone.

Just as a comparison, if you completely fill an entire center section at CF you get about 22-24 thousand people.

  20. Astral Rain 04/10/2011 at 12:08 PM #

Must have been a final over there where the grade was based on how well you disguised yourself as a seat.

  21. statemech 04/10/2011 at 12:17 PM #

I took a stab at counting some heads and making my own reasonable estimate based on the two pictures provided by scotchzombie.

In the picture of the home side I started with the section under the “28 Lawrence” banner and counted about 130 people (I round up when uncertain). Based on that I figure the next two sections to the right have around 200-250 each, so let’s say those three sections together are about 650 (again being quite generous I think).

To the right of that you have about 5 more sections filled with people, with the last 3 looking to hold the same number as the first three I counted, so I’m thinking 650 X 2 = about 1300 people counted so far. Throw in the two denser middle sections, let’s call them 1000 a piece for fun, and my total for the home side, counting in the few loners here and there, is around 4000 people

The visitors’ side looks a little less dense, so for arguments sake I’ll call that about 3000. Throw this all together and I think a reasonable estimate is 7000 people, and again I am rounding up when uncertain.

it’s not only the campus at unccheat.. chapel hill is a frikkin mess. every try to drive through that place? it takes twice as long and the place isn’t that big. i’m ready for a true bypass for that town.. i hate driving through… that paired with the people who live there… chapel hill kills me! total garbage!!

there are parts of the campus i think are pretty.. but i totally agree that they just throw up buildings instead of growing outward.

There was a “kiss in” at the Pit! Same sex only!

Tucker, I agree..At one time the campus did look a lot better, but now instead of a “brickyard” like we have, they have a “concrete yard”. Franklin Street is full of panhandlers, drunks, and drug addicts(and those are just the students). The pine trees have pine beetles and it’s only a matter of time until it looks like a big clay hole!
