Let’s See If We Can Blow The Final Gasket In Ole Roy’s Head

Tuesday night’s game against the Tar Heels couldn’t be more critical. Not from a strategic perspective and the need to win some ACC games, but from a personal perspective. We all heard the jeers from the Tar Heel faithful during their exodus from Carter-Finely having been beaten by a single point: “Wait till basketball season!” exclaimed a baby-blue clad frat boy lookalike with blonde highlights while high fiving another equally stereotypical Tar Heel fan. Well… it’s basketball season and the difference between expectations and reality could not be any more different. Carolina, projected to be at or near the top of the ACC standings and NC State, projected to be at or near the cellar of the ACC standings.

Which takes me to what we can do to help the Wolfpack tomorrow night.

At this point, it has become abundantly clear that Roy Williams has blown a gasket.

Exhibit A: Roy kicking out a Presbyterian fan from the Dean Dome for innocently shouting: “You’re going to miss it Deon!” The Tar Heels won that game handily 103 – 64. After the game, this is what Coach had to say:

“When an idiot runs out on a field, what they do now is they don’t show the idiot, it gives them more publicity…”

“I don’t think anybody should yell anything negative at our players. Period. Let’s not make it a bigger thing than it is. But I just don’t think anybody should yell negative things toward our players who come in on our tickets to watch our game.”

Besides the obvious syntactical error in Roy’s comparison, it’s a little astonishing that a coach at any division 1 program would get his panties in such a wad over an opposing fan cheering for his team…

Exhibit B:

Reporter: “What can we do to get better?”

Roy: “We can do a lot of things. You can’t do anything. The players and the coaches, we can do a lot of things. You? You can’t do anything.”

Woody Durham: ” Geez coach, a little harsh don’t you think?”

Note about Exhibit B: It has come to my attention that Exhibit B was made up off of InsideCarolina.com. When I read this, I didn’t even think about the possibility that it may not be true, after all, that is quintessential Roy Williams right there…

Exhibit C:

Roy: “I have more desire in my little finger than all of the dadgum Carolina fans in the world. I can’t be concerned about any negative things.”

When all this came out especially the “You’re going to miss it Deon” episode, I couldn’t wait for the Tar Heels to play Duke at Cameron. I figured the Crazies would absolutely destroy ole’ Coach for his pathetic public statements. But why wait?

The Duke Basketball Report gave us an exceedingly fair rundown in their article State Spanks Duke 88 – 74. But one area where they did hit us is the lack of an identity from the student section. And I have to agree.

And also a word about the State crowd.  The RBC has all too often been a wasteland.  Not so this time, and good for them.

However, it’s been awhile, and State fans left a certain amount of their identity behind in Reynolds.  It was pretty clear that a lot of what they did they learned from TV, and some of it they need to work on.  Many of the chants were straight out of Cameron, right down to the cadence.  The airball cheer has long since gone out into the world from CIS, where it was born, but the clapped salutations for players is precisely what happens in Durham.

As their program continues to improve, though, State’s kids will re-create their own identity.

Along the same theme, they need remedial dressing instructions.  If you want do the wacky student body thing, party hats are not going to cut it, nor will white robot face masks.

We have a friend who is a State grad who told us years ago that the difference between Cameron, and (then) Reynolds is that at Cameron, they chant in unison but at Reynolds, they just scream their heads off.

The tradition was broken after State moved to the RBC, and as things turned out, State fans have been too dispirited to get around to restoring it. We don’t think the fake sound meter made it over, which is too bad, and there’s no doubt lots of other stuff which has been forgotten too.

There’s a lot of truth to that. And what better time than RIGHT NOW do we have to right this ship. We’re a young team with a long way to go, but I tell you what, the electricity in the RBC during the Duke game was undeniably a factor. We, the 6th man, have to become a factor again. We have too much history and too much tradition to make Raleigh an easy win between ACC games.

So students, this is a plea from an alum. ORGANIZE! Get together! Be creative! Roy has given us a TON of ammo to really come out and hit them hard, get under their skin, see if Roy will try to kick out one of us from our own building. I don’t want to be a Cameron copycat, but to have our student section be effective as theirs would be awesome. It has to start somewhere, just as theirs did. What better time than right now?

fans should all sing “my darling Clementine” at roy every chance they get

i hadn’t heard those comments from roy until now. nor did i know about him removing a fan from the stands. he’s got alot of nerve, considering he couldn’t achieve greatness and win a NC at kansas so he took the cheap route, doherty’s team, and picked one up then another on the coat tails of matt’s “great” team. but the nerve of this guy to kick a fan out is rediculous. i’ve seen on numerous occassions where the unc-ch home crowd were not anywhere considered the class of the ACC. we’ve got a leg up on duke and unc-ch by way of our fans… the greater majority of our fans are actually alumni or born and bred. those dutchbags have fans jumping on the wagon all the time. fine with me. one instance that sticks out to me, when we were at the dean dome and marcus melvin was playing.. more than one of there fans had some gapped up fake teeth in… to make it worse, it was a little unc twerp! that’s not the biggest slap in the face, but i didn’t like it the least bit. i have to give credit to duke’s students… they are very creative and don’t neccessarily stoop to such a cheap shot. i would certainly like to see our students become more of a factor, they definetly have a long way to go. its the alumni that really make some noise. most evident to me at football games… but certainly at basketball too. we’ve got the traditional court paint back, got rid of HWSNBN’s fatass cheerleaders and a coach with some BALLS. back to the subject however, the more i learn about roy the more i don’t like him, GOOD. keep this stuff coming. the vast majority of the powder puff community down right sucks, they lack SPINE not to mention BALLS.

I believe Exhibit B was a fake post on an Inside Carolina. When I originally saw it, I took at as the truth (as did everyone else over there) until the original poster came back and said it was joke. Here is the link:

    http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=78&f=1410&t=5487433&p=1

The poster is called NewOldGuy. He reveals he made it up about 20 posts further down on Page 1.

I do wish it were real though, to support my hatred for him.

No offense Wolfy__79, but it’s a bit harder to make noise when you’re sitting down all game. I appreciate the alumni, especially considering that I’m a third generation Wolfpacker, but I guarantee you that the students are making noise. It may not be organized, but it sure as hell is loud. (Exhibit A – the USF football game from 2 seasons ago).

The organization of the students could definitely use some work though. The student wolfpack club has some potential, as they at least attempt to put out cheer sheets, but most of the time their cheers are really tame and no one follows them. I realize that they are technically representing the university so they have to be careful, but it would definitely be worthwhile if they could revamp their efforts into something that is actually successful. I’m not sure how exactly to do that, but I’m sure the SWPC would be open to any suggestions…

I wish the entire student section would quite down when Deon goes to the line for the first of many trips Tuesday night. And then yell out in unison: You’re going to miss it Deon.

Hell, he may make the shot, but it’d be funny as hell.

  8. 61Packer 01/25/2010 at 5:16 PM #

Put Pepsi cups on the visitors’ bench Tuesday night.

  9. ajwolfpack 01/25/2010 at 5:23 PM #

From my experience, having been in the SWPC for the past 4 years, is that the student sections try to start up a cheer and the cheerleaders try to start up something completely different. So the two cheers get jumbled together and it just sounds bad. I wish the cheerleaders would just stop with their silly cheers (eg TWO, TWO, TWO FOR THE WOLFPACK) and just follow what the students start. Majority of students don’t follow what the cheerleaders start anyways.

Just stay in the game with Carolina.
Keep it close – or kick butt – in the second half.
If that happens you’ll get all the volume you want.
It may not be pretty, but it’s louder than Sid’s jacket.

  11. Wisc-Wolf 01/25/2010 at 5:31 PM #

In Reynolds it did not matter what the cheerleaders did you could not hear them anyway. I think the criticism of the student section is fair and overdue. I have been a season ticket holder for five years now and this year the student section has been dissapointing. I hope we come close to a sell out tomorrow night. There were a lot of empty seats for the Duke game.

  12. Wolfy__79 01/25/2010 at 5:55 PM #

yeah it was pitiful at the duke game, out of town on espn360 and had many camera shots of a scattered crowd. but those who were there really let them have it!! or atleast sounded like it. i’m for increasing the student section to as big as we can stand.. the rbc is huge. and from a students perspetctive, some seats are better off with a student in them… instead of a pissed off alumni. alot of students will cheer regardless, alot of NCSU alumni will piss and scour..

  13. 61Packer 01/25/2010 at 7:03 PM #

There seem to be a lot of LTR seats that weren’t sold this season that are empty almost every game. I know, I see ’em every game. They ought to give those seats to students on a game-by-game basis, or at least sell ’em to fans who could be cheering from the lower level instead of from the 3rd deck. It doesn’t make any sense to have empty seats in the lower level that are empty because they weren’t sold.

  14. wolfpackattack89 01/25/2010 at 7:14 PM #

I got a ticket to the unc game and I didn’t even camp out. I’ll be in the nosebleed, but at least I’ll be there.

  15. Ed89 01/25/2010 at 9:57 PM #

The students are just too quiet. My seats are near the student section, and barring a few loud ones, there is alot of room for improvement.

Another thing, let’s think of something more original than “Scheyer, you suck” or “Singler, you suck” Come on guys, let’s do some original stuff.

  16. travelwolf 01/25/2010 at 10:56 PM #

I’ll bet that ‘the new Lowe’ team will show up tomorrow… We’ll have a good game on our hands – and most likely a win. If we play like we did against Maryland – the rest of our season could be nasty. One bad game is allowable and normal for a young team. Wish I could be there!

  17. theghost 01/26/2010 at 12:28 AM #

when Deon is at the foul line, the whole place should go “shhhhhhhhh” – that one’s pretty easy

or, in unison, “Hey, Roy, throw ME out!” – but I doubt anyone but Cameron could pull that off. It’d be cool if everyone had a t-shirt that said “Don’t throw me out Roy”

  18. fullmoon1 01/26/2010 at 2:02 AM #

The pep band needs to be learning “oh my darlin clementine ” right now. IF we play well the place will be going apes&*%#. To hell with overly complicated chants, aim them at roy and deon(since he doesnt seem capable of fighting his own battles) and drive roy crazy with taunts, chaos and overwhelming volume. Talking smack directly about and to Roy will have the effect on the players of taunting a crazy grandpa. It will rattle those boys. Roy is like that crazy , creepy uncle that always hugged your sister a little too long.

We are already under the carogina’s skin more than usual this year. In previous years they tend to dimiss the wolfpack and deem us unworthy. Nothing would anger them more than to actually prove them wrong by rekindling the rivalry. They want to be Duke’s rival because that boosts thier ego and they always assume they are an equal of Duke. I have actually had carogina fans tell me they feel sorry for state and even pull for state out of pity.
I am anxiously waiting for the opportunity post game to text a unx buddy to say….”did ya see the game” at which point I will say, man, i really want you guys to be competitive again lol. The acc is better when you whiny powders have a good year and go on to explain how the win doesnt mean much since they suck this year.

Hi, I wanted to give some insight to past student cheers. Class of ’85, so I remember the Cardiac Pack against Phi Slamma Jamma, and all that. I saw inperson Chuck Nevitt blocking Ralph Sampson’s shot. I saw inperson Sid Lowe do a between the legs pass on a breakaway to Thurl Bailey for a dunk against Carolina. On and On.

One of the things we did was pick a player from the opposing team (usually the Technician did this). Whenever that person got the ball, the crowd would screem and cheer at the top of their lungs. We did this to Jordan, Brad Dougherty, Mark Price, etc. Some it didn’t affect (MJ, Price, etc). But some it did (Reggie Jackson from Maryland and Jimmie Black from Carolina). Also, we used to yell in unison every time Coach Dean would stand up “Sit Down Dean! Sit Down Dean!”. Remember, this was before the Cameron Crazies were as big as they were. I do know the Dukies always found something about one opposing player and did something when they were introduced. For example, Lorenzo Charles was actually involved in shaking down a Pizza Delivery person the summer before the Famous Dunk. When he was introduced at Cameron, the student section threw pizza boxes onto the court. As a State Grad, I didn’t like it. But I have to admire their intel. Also, I think a UMD player was involved in date-rape incident. Though the charges were dropped, Duke didn’t forget it. The next time at Cameron, they threw panties onto the court. A little sick. But again, they did their intel.

So show some creativity tonight. No one up here knows anything about State, except some former area guys played football down there (Amato is from Easton, for example). Make a statement. Reynolds used to rock (even though those terrible endzone seats were tough to watch a game). State is supposed to be one of the toughest to play in.

  21. bradleyb123 01/26/2010 at 10:41 AM #

Seems like the Cameron Crazies also threw a bunch of old sneakers on the floor when State came to town. I believe it was soon after that scandal where our players sold their free shoes.

  22. wolfbuff 01/26/2010 at 11:25 AM #

ncsuinpa, you’re bringing back good memories. Class of ’87 so I recall all the same things you mentioned. Once upon a time, the State student section was pretty good. I would definitely like to see some organized banter and try to get in Roy’s head. Need to keep it clean, though, or it will backfire on us. There is plenty to work with that should be fair game here.

  23. JimValvano 01/26/2010 at 3:20 PM #

I remember going to Reynolds as a kid (late 80’s and early 90’s) and the crowd would do real quick, high pitched woop, woop, woop when the other team had the ball instead of what we now do (copy of dookies) ooooooooohhhhhhhhhh. It was much more effective and very different.

I’d also like to see howling more involved in what we do at ballgames. We’re the Wolfpack…why not do some howling.

The cadence thing has bothered me for years, but there is nothing you can do.

My sister, myself, and a group of about 18 other family members have tried on multiple occasions to bring back some of the original stuff from Reynolds, but the kids in the student section just turn around and look at us like we don’t know what the hell we’re doing…then they turn around and cheer like a bunch of dorky dookies.

Why the hell would anyone want to be like some dork that attends duke? Most of them can’t even dribble a basketball, let alone know anything about the game of basketball. Our student section needs to lead…not follow.

There’s a lot of discussion about fan behavior in this post so I’d like to offer a suggestion. If the Wolfpack are fortunate enough to get a win tonight can the fans NOT rush the court? That was an embarrassment last week when they stormed the floor after beating a conference opponent ranked 7/8 in mid January. Act like you’ve been there before. While it’s true that State hasn’t been “there” recently, the fans should have a little more decorum and realize that one win is not a season-changing event. I don’t mean to tamp down enthusiasm, in fact it’s just the opposite. But it seems to me like showing a little confidence in the players and the program could go a long way. It looked to me like the State players weren’t surprised they had won and rushing the floor after winning a single game against a ranked opponent might actually erode that confidence. A win tonight would be a very good thing but it’s not as if we’d be knocking off a consensus #1 team. The fact is the Tarheels aren’t that good and we should expect a win on the home floor.

Cheers to a program with class AND swagger.
