Good Russell Wilson interview

Russell warming up

850TheBuzz has a good interview with Russell Wilson that you will enjoy. (Link to interview) I never stop being impressed by this young man.

The latter part of the interview discusses Russell’s passion for baseball as well as football. However, there doesn’t seem to be any legitimate likelihood of Andrew Jones’ dream of Wilson giving up football (to make Carolina’s life easier) becoming a reality.

Speaking of specializing, the Wilmington Star News couldn’t have picked better timing than to run this article about the topic on their website last night. The article contains as much ‘meat’ on the topic as is possible, rising above the usual five or six obligatory paragraphs that we normally see on the topic.

“The Lord put a talent in my life,” Wilson said, “and I wanted to go someplace that would allow me to use it to its fullest extent.”

Unlike most of the other schools that recruited the Richmond, Va., native out of high school, State didn’t force him to choose between his two athletic loves – football and baseball.

That, as it turned out, made all the difference in the world to a multi-talented star with designs on playing both at the next level.

Two years later, Wilson is well on his way toward continuing a Wolfpack tradition of successful two-sport athletes.

While you have Russell Wilson on your mind, you can click here to see previous entries that we have ‘tagged’ with Russell Wilson for you to peruse. Obviously, there have been some super features focused on the young man that have been printed by the media in the past.

It is going to take a borderline miracle to get you guys (baseball team) into the ACC Tournament

Wilson is a good kid and he was extremely impressive in this interview. I think it is good for the ACC in general as long as he is playing football. Hard not to pull for a kid like this who is mature and works his tail off playing two high profile sports at the college level.

Wow! Even the Tar Heel Fans at SFN are of a higher caliber!! Thanks for the comments.

cant wait for football season, Wilson is a stand up kinda guy and we could be really good this fall…. has SFN heard anything about the DeSaun Painter recruitment? i hear its down to Maryland and us, what are SFN’s gut feelings?

I have a football recruiting related question I wonder if anyone can answer: Does anyone have a sense on how well TOB is recruiting here versus BC? I remember when he came here that people suggested he could recruit better talent, does anyone get a sense if that is true?

    5. Packman02 05/13/2009 at 9:42 AM #

^ TOB’s getting a MUCH better haul of talent in Raleigh. Terrell Manning, R.J. Mattes, Brandon Barnes, Rob Crisp are North Carolina kids who probably wouldn’t have even taken a visit up to Boston.

That’s not banging on BC – just stating fact; these kids all chose NC State with other MAJOR offers on the table (UF, ‘Bama, UGA, etc.).

TOB is flat out getting it done.

Thanks Packman…I am pretty excited about football season…

Wilson has the “it” quality that all successful quarterbacks have. It’s something you can’t descibe in just one sentence or word. He just knows how to win. Whatever it takes on any play. Whether he has to throw it away to fight another play or scramble twenty yards for a big play. Other guy’s love playing with a guy like this. They know they are never really out of it. If the running game comes around this season could be special. I hope it starts with a thorough beating of the Cocks!

    8. BJD95 05/13/2009 at 9:56 AM #

Tom O’Brien is clearly recruiting better here than he did at Boston College. And he has had past BC recruits drafted in the Top 10 of successive NFL drafts.

I am certain that we will have at least one truly special season (i.e., not a parade for a 5-3 ACC mark) before Coach O’Brien retires.

It’s good to have something to look forward to – even though our window of opportunity is relatively short, and based on our level of commitment to winning, probably the last real success any of us see in our lifetimes.

I agree with that to some extent. It has always been that way. But if that special season included a BCS game I am not so sure. If TOB leaves at the end of his contract like many speculate we could hire from within and keep the staff intact. The success could continue from there. Of course all of this is a guess but why not us? This fan base is the best and any football coach would love to have it.

even though our window of opportunity is relatively short,

While working on a couple of FB entries it just hit me that State’s 2010 cross-divisional games are against VT, GT, and UNC. That could easily be the hardest schedule in the Atlantic Division. Just a quick thought for those State fans that keep talking up our chances in 2010.

    11. tobaccordshow 05/13/2009 at 10:14 AM #

Thanks BJD for the nice dousing of cold water. We gotta make sure we stay in our seats here. This is still NC State we’re talking about.

      When does his contract expire?

    12. BJD95 05/13/2009 at 10:21 AM #

Good point about the 2010 schedule, VAWolf. But I think it’s possible that we will be good enough that a harder schedule won’t ultimately matter (as long as we beat the other Atlantic contenders head to head).

I see our window as 2010-12, which could be extended if we land another special QB to follow Mike Glennon.

I will be happy if we get 5 more seasons out of Tom O’Brien, but not surprised if it’s only 4. I suppose it’s possible that we get 7 or 8 more, but think that’s the absolute max.

We probably will hire from within to be as cheap as humanly possible, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be able to continue Tom O’Brien’s level of success (see O’Cain, Mike).

    13. Gowolves 05/13/2009 at 10:21 AM #

I think 2012. It was a five year contract. If that is incorrect please let me know. I think he would retire and not go to another program. Again this is all speculation. I have a friend who is friends with Andy McCollum(sp?) linebackers coach. He has stated through discussions with TOB that is what he thinks he will do. Again who knows. What if the teams up until then keep progressing? Hard to walk away from that.

    14. StateFans 05/13/2009 at 10:53 AM #

Agree with the thoughts that we are looking to have a great run in 2010-2012. But, we may be gearing up for a longer run when you consider the roll we seem to be getting on with recruiting. This year’s class is probably going to be super special…thereby only extending that horizon beyond 2012.

    15. BJD95 05/13/2009 at 11:20 AM #

I agree that recruiting sets up really well, but I’m not sure it’s so good that it will allow us to be special without a top-flight coach like Tom O’Brien (although leftover TOB talent was enough to get “Jags” into two ACC title games). And I don’t think NC State will ever have enough talent to be special without a special QB.

    16. packalum44 05/13/2009 at 11:34 AM #

BJD, EVER is a big word. I respectfully disagree.

    17. LKNpackfan 05/13/2009 at 11:35 AM #

I like our chances, regardless of opponent, if we can get to the Championship game in 2010 or 2011. The game will be in Charlotte both of those years.

    18. packalum44 05/13/2009 at 11:40 AM #

We got TOB. I like our chances every year b/c we HAVE a chance. Especially in the ACC.

BTW: Thanks for this post. Love reading articles about RW!

“How many quarterbacks are there in the NFL that are like him,” a scout, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said of the 5-foot-11, 191-pounder who missed parts of four football games because of injuries last season. “None.

      Me, “Screw him.”

“For me, it would be ideal to play both (professionally). I definitely think I could do it,” Wilson said.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

Go for it Russell! We’re all rooting for you!

Ask Alabama about having a great QB and how it can make the difference. Put a college-level Philip Rivers on last year’s team and they probably win the national championship. John Parker Wilson got them as far as he could, but when they played Florida in the SEC Championship, he didn’t have the gun to keep the Gators on their heels. So yeah, it takes a great QB to be special.

Sure, you can point out that Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl, or list any number of college signal callers, but in today’s game, the ability to score quickly is something that is really needed when you play the best of the best. You’re just not going to do that with a limited mobility QB who doesn’t have a howitzer for a throwing arm.

As for NC State, sure, a top level QB would be needed. So would a solid OL, defense and running game. Ultimately, football is a team game from the coaching staff down to the special teams players. All have to be talented and operating at a high level week in and week out to get to the top. Given that the Wolfpack would have to be near the top of the polls all year to even sniff a BCS Title game, this is doubly true.

    21. Gowolves 05/13/2009 at 12:23 PM #

Tee Martin at TN. Jay Barker AL in the early 90’s won championships? Is that correct? Manning never did at TN.

    22. packalum44 05/13/2009 at 12:32 PM #

^ Agree with you Alpha. Can’t recall a college championship team in recent memory who hasn’t had a great QB. Not AS important in NFL. I would argue that Alabama had a “special” year nonetheless but that is a vauge word and would need to be defined.

I’m not delusional though. NC State is nowhere near being a contender in the BCS championship game, good QB or not. I just want an ACC championship and that is real possibility this upcoming season! That to me, would be special.

    23. Zen Wolf 05/13/2009 at 1:06 PM #

TOB will be with us many years to come. He will build us into a national power and we will build statues and monuments to him and the players he recruits. I have asked the universe to show me what the future holds and this was the vision that I had. NC State has been a loyal servant to the universe and the universe plans on giving us 15 more years of TOB and at least one National Championship. Call me crazy if you would like but the Universe has spoken and the future looks good for NC State Football.

    24. BJD95 05/13/2009 at 1:22 PM #

I don’t think you can expect us to accumulate “football factory” level talent, like you might get at a place like Tennessee, Alabama, or Ohio State. Football factories occasionally accumulate talent that can win a title with a guy like Tee Martin (but still very difficult), but schools like NC State usually don’t.

For NC State, the recipe for optimal success is Top 20/25-caliber talent plus very good-to-great QB plus great coaching.

I think we will have all 3 components in the 2010-12 window.

A Mike O’Cain quality replacement does not have to be a given in any environment. At the time, a stubborn AD made what was about as poor of a choice of replacement as he possibly could under the circumstances. Any number of better choices were not only readily available, but universally logical. Turner had to leap frog to find Fredo under a rock.

Yes, I know who we are, but it doesn’t have to keep being that way. Yes, I also know our current AD is Jed Turner II.
