All Focus on…Lee Fowler, of course!

At a time when all focus should be on the quest of NC State’s Baseball to reach the College World Series – the Pack will travel to Georgia this weekend – our ‘esteemed’ Athletics Director turns some attention on…HIMSELF, of corse

Yesterday, Pack Pride highlighted an ‘extended interview’ that Lee Fowler gave WRAL-TV5 over the weekend. WRAL-TV also ran similar video interviews with Tom O’Brien and Sidney Lowe. The reason we aren’t criticizing Coach Lowe and Coach O’Brien for their inverviews is because (1) they are actually COACHES and don’t just play one in their fantasies and (2) they haven’t been interviewed at extreme lengths by GoPack.com, PackPride.com, 850TheBuzz and the News & Observer in just the last six weeks!

Anyway, the following is Fowler’s interview. Watch it with a scrutinizing eye for the word ‘facilities’ and you will start laughing like you are watching a John Stewart spoof. Fowler talks about approximately 150 seconds in the first 3 minutes of the video. He says the word “facility” or “facilities’ eleven times in two and half minutes and references facilities (with words like “them”, Carter-Finley, RBC Center, etc) at least seven more times. At least he has his talking points down.

Did you note how we are just now “catching up” to this subjective judgement of how great EVERYONE else’s facilities are? Do you understand that we are just now ‘catching up’ so now we get a new set of excuses of how we must ‘keep up’ and keep focusing on nothing but facilities? You see…it is a never ending cycle of excuses. You NEVER get ahead…even when you have a $166 million basketball arena that is the best in the country and generates no titles.

Can you imagine how many MORE ACC titles Duke basketball would have won if they would have expanded Cameron Indoor, or how much better Wake football and Carolina baseball would have been in the last 3 or 4 years if they would have actually improved their facilities BEFORE their most recent upgrades that are coming AFTER their recent successes?

“Oh that’s just Lee being Lee!”

  2. graywolf 06/03/2008 at 8:27 AM #

SOS…..Lee loves a camera, so he can watch himself.

    Hey Lee……ND needs an AD.

lee gave this interview (as did all the coaches) at the Wake Co caravan on Wednesday last week. Why WRAL chose to run these when they did is unknown.

  4. packpigskinfan23 06/03/2008 at 9:09 AM #

In all fairness the interviewer did ask him about the facilities… but I think this is because even they feel like thats the only thing Fowler can talk about.

Now we just need to “keep up”?!?! What about the results IN PLAY!! THAT is where we need to catch up and “keep up” LEE!! Like you said, we are in the top 5 in fan support in the COUNTRY, so obviously us fans are doing our part.

The “facilities” that Fowler mentions in an interview from 6 days ago were instrumental in attracting a NCAA Regional that drew crowds that lifted the team in two tight wins over a baseball power this weekend.

Ironically, you are actually doing Lee a favor by highlighting this prescient interview…

  6. redfred2 06/03/2008 at 11:52 AM #

My favorite is when Lee says something like, “We just need to look around,…see what others are doing,…and blah, blah, blah.”

That accurately sums up the think tank in Raleigh about as good as anyone can.

“HEY GUYS, I JUST CAME UP WITH A GREAT IDEA, LET’S COPY THEM!!!”

So you are saying we have found one thing Lee has done right?

For those tired of hearing about Foulup, go read something else.

You can’t get rid of one of the biggest clods of dirt holding the athletic programs back unless you talk about it and build momentum toward actually holding the guy accountable and letting him go if he doesn’t meet reasonable standards…Although, honestly, I would fire the guy for all of the stupid “house against itself” comments he seems to make all the time that make recruiting and everything else more difficult. Whose side is this guy on?

  9. Rick 06/03/2008 at 3:03 PM #

“Whose side is this guy on?”

    That’s easy.
He is on Lee Fowler’s side

  10. Wulfpack 06/03/2008 at 3:14 PM #

No, not at all on LF’s side. LF is a total joke. However, my point is your and my bitching on a blog isn’t going to get LF fired. If you haven’t been paying any attention, the faculty loves him and NC State athletics is still raising money.

As our baseball team stands on the verge of a birth in the college world series, you are only giving credence to the fact that we are all labeled a bunch of malcontents.

I have come to the realization that it is what it is. LF isn’t going anywhere unless he chooses to. That’s just the way it is.

  11. WolfpackSteelersFan2 06/03/2008 at 3:18 PM #

I agree with him that we should not wait 30 years to update our facilities like years past, but that should never used as an excuse for not meeting his own stated goals.

Yeah that never works. see Sendek,Herb

^Rick, please don’t give the ” ” sunshiner’s any more ammo. That would be giving us bloggers way too much credit anyway.

But now that you mentioned ” “, and I’m not making excuses for two grown men who should have personal goals of their own, but I’d have to put both ” ” and LF in pretty much the same boat. They’re both just two little boy scouts who do/did exactly what it takes to make their own Scout Master, along with all of their local troop sponsors, give them an occassional commendation and a pat on the head.

In Lee Fowler’s mind, as well as in ” ” ‘s mind back then, they are/were both doing an outstanding job for NC State University. That is, they are/were doing exactly what is being asked of them, and even more. So why shouldn’t they both be a little bewildered and offended when they hear of negative comments coming from the lowly fans?

Lee Fowler is a well connected guy who’s perched pretty high on his own comfortable limb, just doing exactly what it takes to make the people he answers to happy. The problem is that the decay in Raleigh is even over Lee Fowler’s head. The real rotting processes started at the very top of the tree, many, many years ago, and it has filtered down and continued to flourish there.

^ Agreed most heartily! Until the old guard is changed, nothing else will change (except probably get worse.)

Personally, I tire of this drumbeat. Fowler is worthless, we get it. But can we focus on baseball and the upcoming football season and just ignore this dufus?

Yes, I know there is a GA game preview posted – read it. And yes, I know I don’t have to read this post. Any yes, our title cupboard is bare. But bitching about it will not fix it. It just makes this corner of the internet right negative. I used to come to this site to learn useful things about a sports program I care about. Now, not so much.

Maybe take the summer off after baseball… Or just enact a Fowler-free zone for a few months?

    Just an idea.

  16. redfred2 06/03/2008 at 9:14 PM #

    ^Hey, that’s it!!!

Let’s enact an OPEC-free, terrorist-free, global warming-free, politician-free, ZONE, then gas prices will plummet and all of the rest of our problems will most likely solve themselves.

I think he’s onto something there!

  17. redfred2 06/03/2008 at 9:23 PM #

Sorry to be a SA, gopack, but this title of thread is…???

“Personally, I tire of this drumbeat. Fowler is worthless, we get it. But can we focus on baseball and the upcoming football season and just ignore this dufus? ”

Well, Of the top seven articles on the blog, 5 are about baseball, one on the wrestling transfer and one on LF. Not sure I see your point

  19. PAPacker 06/04/2008 at 8:21 AM #

Given all the work and the excellence of the site, if you guys want to whistle the fight song out your asses, I would say “Go Pack!” The steady drumbeat is the only way to grind away at this well-entrenched situation. FireLeeFowler.com has also been linking to these pieces, so there is a larger purpose at work than just detailing the depth of Jed’s incompetence.

  20. StateFans 06/04/2008 at 8:38 AM #

How about those of you who have such grandiose ideas for how to run a blog head over to blogger.com and set one up and we will link to it for you.

    Thanks

  21. PAPacker 06/04/2008 at 3:03 PM #

SFN, lest I be misunderstood, please keep the drumbeat up. I’m sure a lot of WPC members read this as they contemplate the larger status of things. May the accounting continue like a drill in the ears of Jed, Oblinger, Wolfpack nation and the media.

  22. redfred2 06/04/2008 at 4:16 PM #

    Since PAPacker asked…

What “they” would like us common fans to realize is that no matter what we may say about them, they are a very successful group as a whole. And if the truth be known, there is really no denying that fact at all. Just look around, the stands are always full, the money keeps pouring in, and if you were in charge would you be the least bit motivated to change any nuance of a surefire, low maintenance, and time tested, formula like that? Would you be open to even hearing a word from someone suggesting you do otherwise? Wouldn’t you also feel that you were doing things absolutely correct and right for the university, that you were owed some respect and a little appreciation for your efforts?

That’s the real irony of it all.

The administration will simply continue to prosper much more because of, as well as in spite of, US, the common NC STATE UNIVERSITY fan. NCSU’s financial success makes us look like uneducated malcontents, while at the very same time it makes the administration look like they are heroes who can rise above it all and still prosper while being totally surrounded by the likes of Duke, unc, and even their own ‘ignorant’ fans.

    That is what we’re fighting.

  23. highstick 06/04/2008 at 7:40 PM #

Right, Fred… It’s like Jimmy V. said….”Never, never give up”!

I’ve been in exile in Chapel Hole since Sunday night and forget to take my password so I can log in on my laptop so all I’ve been able to do was “read the posts” since then. Couldn’t even get the baseball game on the radio in the motel and ended up back in my car listening to it Sunday night.

Learned or should I say verified a couple of things last night about Tar Heel academics from a current Tar Heel student and a recent grad. I’ll post these at a later date!!

  24. blpack 06/04/2008 at 8:11 PM #

There is an obvious problem with the athletics dept. Even if we go to the CWS and win the whole darn thing. As super as it would be, it would be like 1 in a million. Opportunities to repeated success in other sports are few as the programs are being run now. Kudos to SFN for leading the charge against the status quo. May Fowler’s days be numbered.
