Wolfpack baseball has a major loss before the weekend starts

RALEIGH – N.C. State will have to play the NCAA baseball tournament without sophomore left-hander Jimmy Gillheeney, the Pack’s closer.

Wolfpack coach Elliott Avent said Wednesday night that Gillheeney, who missed last week’s ACC tournament, has been ruled out of NCAA play. Gillheeney was a first-team All-ACC selection after finishing the regular season with 10 saves and a 1.12 earned run average.

“I’ve told the team we’ve got to move on without him,” Avent said.

Not surprising. We are truly snakebitten

^No doubt. If it isn’t Brackman in baseball, it’s Toney Baker in football or Degand in basketball…all at critical times. We finally get a Regional (due to great facilities) and we now have little chance of coming out of it the winner.

I wouldn’t say we have little chance to advance. We probably have at least a 33% chance of advancing.

At least the team has had a week to (I would presume) install an All-American at closer in McConnell. I didn’t think it was wise to throw him in to close in the ACC tourney (I won’t get into that argument), but having had the week to prepare for it, he and the team should both be prepared for the role. If he isn’t going to close, there are a couple of other good bullpen arms.

Whats the deal? Academics or the ever-hazy “broke a team rule”? I’m guessing he didn’t make the grades…

The Wolfpack pitching staff runs pretty deep. I’m sure there’s at least one or two in there that can come in and close out a few ballgames. Sure it’s cause for concern, but by no means is the sky falling, nor is the team snakebitten.

If Surkamp can get us the win tomorrow and Shunick can go 7 innings like he did vs. Clemson, we should be in great shape, no matter who the closer is. Our Bull Pen will be fine. GO PACK!!

We have the pitching to overcome this loss. It comes down to a question of how our bats do – and how good the other teams pitchers are. If they are good (and I mean top-end ACC #1/#2 starter quality) then we are in trouble.

Buchanan is starting the first game. I wonder why we aren’t going with Surkamp??
