Fowler Says Pack Will Work It Out While Implicitly Criticizing Himself (Updated 2:45pm)

Surprise, surprise…”Coach Fowler” is talking.

At the Raleigh Sports Club on the same day that he called into 850TheBuzz, Fowler noted the Pack will be playing just its third home game Saturday when it comes off semester exams to face South Carolina State at the RBC Center.

Has any other State team played five of the first seven away from home?” Fowler asked.

Excuse me? I guess I am curious as to why the people who actually control the schedule are now trying to use the schedule they control as a reference point of abnormality?

I agree with Fowler’s implied point that this schedule is absurd. I also don’t understand why he would be so stupid as to cite the abnormality of the schedule in public — as HE is responsible for the schedule!!!

(Now, before you run off on a tangent and start telling me how Quinten Jackson and the Basketball office is really in charge of the schedule, allow me to reference you to numerous newspaper articles on the public record from the early part of this decade where Lee Fowler explains to us all that HE is responsible for the scheduling at NC State. [These were written when Fowler first started scheduling ECU on the gridiron despite his head coach’s opposition to the policy.] So…argue with Lee Fowler and not us about it because he’s the one who has publicly stated he is responsible and therefore that is all that we have to use.)

Does Fowler think that us fans who have shelled out all of the money for lifetime rights to watch NC State play basketball have pity on them for so poorly executing the schedule such that all we have gotten to see a month into the schedule is William & Mary and New Orleans?

Jeez. Lee Fowler is the guy who wanted to play at East Carolina. Lee Fowler is the guy who mandated that we play at East Caroline. So, to deliver on Fowler’s mandate his Athletics Department came up with the brilliant idea to schedule the trip for a SATURDAY NIGHT after an 8 day layoff right before exams! All of this because we just had to play in Greenville – where we had NEVER played before – because Lee Fowler said that it would help our RPI. How’d that idea work out?

The bigger picture here is the headline that ‘Fowler Says Pack Will Work it Out’.

I obviously hope and pray that he is right and the Wolfpack gets back on the winning track very soon!

But, unfortunately, Lee Fowler has said so much in his career that I am not going to have faith in our basketball team getting back on track because Lee Fowler said so. As a reminder, Fowler has also said that:

* Playing at ECU in absketball would help our RPI.

* Herb Sendek was going to take us to national prominence.

* Chuck Amato was in strong standing less than a month before he was fired.

* A lot of Duke fans want to get rid of Coach K.

* He liked the idea of Steve Lavin as the head coach of NC State.

* That Sidney Lowe would not coach NC State for a month before hiring Sidney Lowe to coach NC State.

* That Herb Sendek had to leave NC State for safety concerns for his family.

* That only 50 crazy people on the internet didn’t like Herb Sendek.

* That it isn’t fair to hold our coaches accountable until they get brand new facilities.

* That we should aim to finish in the top 3rd of a 9 team conference and the top half of a 12 team conference

…do you feel better now that Fowler has siad that we will work things out?

What’s the difference between ‘team identity’ and ‘chemistry’? Semantics…

  2. packbackr04 12/13/2007 at 1:01 PM #

well Lee…. why in the hell have we only played 2 home games? why didnt you ensure that we had more? that is your Mother F$@#ing job isnt it!

  3. RAWFS 12/13/2007 at 1:02 PM #

Fowler used exactly the same talking points yesterday on The Buzz. I’ve written Ovies to ask him to put it up on their blog so that you non-Raleigh guys can hear what he had to say.

“well Lee…. why in the hell have we only played 2 home games? why didnt you ensure that we had more? that is your Mother F$@#ing job isnt it!”

director of bball operations mainly, not the AD.
also, games were left over from the last staff (old spice tourney, ecu, seaton hall, etc…)

SFN: that is not what Lee Fowler publicly said a few years ago when our scheduling of ECU in football was a big media issue. Additionally, ithe director of bball operations and the head coach of NC State did NOT schedule the game AT ECU. Lee Fowler did.

Does LF have the responsibility for anything (besides insulting NCSU supporters and trying to promote himself!)

  6. Rick 12/13/2007 at 1:23 PM #

“Does LF have the responsibility for anything (besides insulting NCSU supporters and trying to promote himself!)”

    Lee’s job responsibilities
    – “know basketball”
    – provide water at football games (oops)
    – open mouth whenever within ten feet of a mic
    – keep list of excuses on why teams do not succeed
    – assure “continuity”

  7. Rick 12/13/2007 at 1:25 PM #

    add
    – patrol message boards in the guise of the Cedarwolf character and use “witty banter” to make He and his cronies look better

  8. Keystone 12/13/2007 at 1:40 PM #

LF’s comments at the end of the article seem to be either defending his decision to go to Greenville, or advocating future trips, which is very disappointing / scary.

  9. RAWFS 12/13/2007 at 1:43 PM #

    Is Cedarwolf really Lee?

I thought it interesting that Debbie Yow owned up to having an account on UMD boards for her and her staff, and ocassionally replying to messages. I bet that it is SOP for most athletic departments.

All I want for Christmas is for Lee Fowler to get another job!!

  11. Dan 12/13/2007 at 1:54 PM #

Lee says he’s not much of a “chemistry” guy. No kidding.

My god. How long will this last?

  12. packbackr04 12/13/2007 at 2:26 PM #

    RAWFS^^
“it is SOP for most athletic departments.”

which is exactly why i doubt Lee looks at message boards. if he did, he might have a clue.

also cedar.2^^ Lee scheduled this friggin game in Greenville as a favor for his buddy Holland, not Herbs Director of Bball operations. it was a total under the table tugjob. just like in Wedding Crashers… “people helpin people!”

also, i thought Quentin and Sid got us into the Old spice Classic. didnt SFN run a thread on that last year when we were added to the slate?

I enjoyed reading the updated portion of this post. I laughed, because it shows that “Coach” Lee might not be quite as smart as he thinks he is. My biggest problem with the schedule is the 9 day layoff, followed by a 7 day layoff followed by a 6 day layoff. How can a team improve if its games are so spaced out that each game is like the beginning of a new season?

  14. Clarksa 12/13/2007 at 2:46 PM #

UNC-CH played 1 neutral, 6 away, and two home in their first 9 games…they didn’t seem to have a problem.

  15. Clarksa 12/13/2007 at 2:48 PM #

    Actually…make that 3 neutral and 4 away.

  16. StateFans 12/13/2007 at 2:48 PM #

^Obviously you know by now that Lee Fowler does not benchmark NC State against UNC-CH and Duke

  17. eas 12/13/2007 at 3:10 PM #

Not to get off the subject but I am SO glad we DIDN’T hire Steve Lavin. Everytime I see him on ESPN, I can’t help but think we were lucky that Fowler couldn’t “bring him in”.

I’m just glad Lee has everything “worked out now”. Now that we have played (and lost) to some powerhouse squads, we should be right back on track…..only thing left are a few cup cake ACC games.

Let’s hope this week can produce miracles and make some magic chemistry before ACC play begins!

“Lee scheduled this friggin game in Greenville as a favor for his buddy Holland”

if we had won like we should have it would be a non-issue

SFN: See…^that is NOT TRUE. Winning or losing the game doesn’t change the fact that a program like NC State does not/should not travel to an in-state OOC arena. Had we won the game our RPI and SOS would have both significantly FALLEN despite the fact that Lee Fowler said that it would be good for our RPI to play the game. Winning the game does not make these issues moot.

“i thought Quentin and Sid got us into the Old spice Classic. didnt SFN run a thread on that last year when we were added to the slate?”

nope, it was left from the old staff’s schedule committments. Some here want to give Sid credit for “improving the OOC schedule” to advanve their agenda.

I’m putting a bounty on the vocal cords of Lee Fooler. The first person to bring me his vocal cords wins something yet to be determined.

Every time – and I mean EVERY time this man opens his mouth he embarrasses the NC State community. And Fooler has never met a microphone or a camera or a reporter he didn’t like.

There may be a worse athletic director somewhere in D-I than Fooler but I’ll be damned if I know who it might be.

  21. packbackr04 12/13/2007 at 4:24 PM #

“Lee scheduled this friggin game in Greenville as a favor for his buddy Holland”

“if we had won like we should have it would be a non-issue”

wrong again cedar…. it WOULD still be an issue because even if we “win”, it still hurts our RPI. how exactly is that a non-issue. it is a very big issue.

  22. Wulfpack 12/13/2007 at 5:00 PM #

Are there not other games we shedule that hurts our RPI? It would be much less of an issue had we won.

SFN: No other games played on the home court of an in-state out of conference opponent where we have never seen fit to visit in over 100 years of playing basketball.

  23. highstick 12/13/2007 at 5:31 PM #

I see this as two issues, but agree both are related:

    1. Lee doens’t get it, never has, never will and the sooner he’s gone, the better off we’ll be. Maybe he can go replace Todd Turner!

    2. Team performance, different, but related issue. We shouldn’t be losing these games, but it’s not a scheduling issue, it’s a performance issue.

If Lee doesn’t understand Chemistry, tell him to go stand in front of Dr. Johnston’s statue and ask for training. I’m sure Johnston is famous, but he was awful as a freshman chemistry professor. Pure torture to sit through his lectures!

I’m afraid what it is going to take to get LF fired is to get in a whole new BOT. The AD works for the Chanceller. The only opinion that matters about the quality of work that LF does is the Chancellor’s opinion. If LF is working inside the Chancellor’s guidelines and wishes, it is likely he will not be fired. But and this is a BIG but the Chancellor gets his direction from the BOT. Like I said, what it is going to take to get LF fired is to get in a whole new BOT.

Regarding the ECU game, a far more likely scenerio is the BOT suggested to Oblinger that we schedule our sister school, than Fowler was sucking Holland’s dick. For sure Holland likely engineered the suggestion through shrewd manipulation of contacts, however, it is far more complicated than LF operating on his own.

I say let’s continue to kill the messenger because we don’t like the message. It is a helluva lot more fun than trying to get a new BOT.

Come on guys – didn’t your mommas teach you that its not nice to make fun of a moron ?? Jed Clampett Fowler should not be on the hot seat because of scheduling East Carolina, he SHOULD be fired because of the quality of his body of his work here at NCSU.
