Anthony Hill Out With Knee Injury?

There seems to be a story floating around Wolfpack Football that All-ACC tight end, Anthony Hill may be out for the season with a knee injury?

The threads about the subject keep getting deleted off of The Wolfpacker and PackPride..so we figured we would break the news “embargo” to see if anyone had any credible information on the topic.

What has leaked from the threads is that Hill was told it was a torn ACL… but then he went for a second opinion to find out it may only be sprained.

Wow. Wondered who it which “big name” it was going to be. Despite what anyone says about him dropping passes, Anthony Hill was our best offensive player last year and maybe the best player at his position in the ACC. Tough, tough loss if it turns out to be true.

I am actually excited about Marcus Stone’s potential at TE though.

  2. Trout 07/23/2007 at 10:03 AM #

That would be a huge loss, if true.

  3. thirdworld333 07/23/2007 at 10:45 AM #

Please, I hope this is not true.

Would be a big deal for the OL as Hill is such a strong blocker. Also, TE isn’t exactly a position of depth for this squad.

In the passing O, I expect that Marcus Stone could be as good or better than Hill, though not his equal all around.

  5. packpigskinfan23 07/23/2007 at 1:08 PM #

I doubt stone can block anywhere near the way Hill can.

    I hope hill is fine.

Stone would be invaluable as a “weak-side” TE in a two TE set that would give us throwing options on both ends of the line. We need Hill for run blocking.

  7. waxhaw 07/23/2007 at 2:22 PM #

That would explain all of the hype surrounding Marcus Stone having a big year.

the most disturbing thing about this story is the censorship on the boards. Is this yet another example of PackPride trying to limit any remotely useful information to their “Premium” Board, or are they deleting info off the premium board as well? (I for one am tired of for-profit sports message boards, for many reasons in addition to this).

from article on GoPack about TOB

“He is a man of few words,” Blackman said. “He really gets the point across in the very few words that he does use. It’s a lot different than it used to be. We used to talk about things that were expected of us, but it was kind of redundant because we kept going over the same thing, the same thing, the same thing. After a while, it seemed like people lost focus in the meetings.”

so… that was the problem for the last few years!! the players got so used to Amato telling them what they were doing wrong, they just started to ignore it. You cant put that all on Amato of course… but it is very telling.

Pam – they are deleting it off the premium board as well. I just think they don’t know for sure and are trying to remove speculation.

Isn’t speculation precisely what internet message boards were created for? Thank goodness for blogs like this one that actually trust its readers to separate the wheat from the chaff…

Pamlico: I can’t figure out why it is such a secret either. Although it could have something to do with protecting the privacy of the player. He does have a future in the NFL to protect.

  13. noah 07/23/2007 at 4:51 PM #

That can’t be it. A player’s medical history is gone over with a fine-tooth comb before the draft.

Does Hill have a redshirt year to burn?

  14. statered 07/23/2007 at 4:58 PM #

I have seen some people saying that the rumor originated on IC in which case I can totally understand deleting it.

  15. Mr O 07/23/2007 at 5:11 PM #

Noah: Didn’t he play as a true freshman? If the rumor wasn’t true, then I think James and Steve from Packpride would have said so instead of just locking threads.

  16. noah 07/23/2007 at 5:13 PM #

Mr. O – I honestly can’t recall. I think he did a year of prep school, but I don’t remember if he played as a true frosh or not.

SFN says: “so we figured we would break the news “embargo” to see if anyone had any credible information on the topic.”

SFN gets: “dude, that would suck” “I sure hope not” “Marcus Stone rocks man!”

The news is that there is no news on Hill. Nothing to report. I take that to mean he’s fine.

  19. vtpackfan 07/23/2007 at 6:29 PM #

Let’s keep our fingers crossed. With Heppe, Lathan, McCuller and Hill up front on the right side we have a good shot at short yardage situations.

Hill is able to curl out on those plays and get first downs, but I am actually looking for Stone to help our attack deeper down the seam of the field.

Did we or did we not get a JC TE this past season? I thought we did.

IF Hill is injured, then perhaps that will be extra motivation for not only Stone, but the entire OL to step up and (to use a term I personally hate) overachieve.

Stay away from that Rupert Murdoch propaganda machine, Statefans.com. Their moderators will only infuriate and frustrate you.

The Wolfpacker has the following from the horse’s (O’Brien) mouth:

“…When asked about the status of senior tight end Anthony Hill, who has been the subject of rumors that he tore his ACL, O’Brien said that the All-ACC candidate was not injured.”

  22. RabidWolf 07/23/2007 at 9:04 PM #

As far as the JUCO TE goes, no. We have a couple of RS players (a freshman, a junior, a soph, and of course Stone, a Sr.) We have some decent depth at TE, and it all depends on how they are developing in this system (and the weight room). IMHO, we will be fine at this particular position.

    Frank Fields III RS Jr
    Matt Kushner RS So
    Rashad Phillips RS Fr
Anthony Hill Sr (if hurt, looks like he has a RS year to burn)
    Marcus Stone RS Sr

So…it appears that Hill isn’t hurt.

However, we had three recruits who didn’t qualify: Kyle Linney, Justin Whaley and Dominique Ellis (watch him end up at FSU after a year in prep school). Also, we had three players quit: Avery Vogt, Gerard Miller (both will transfer) and Gavin Smith (whose mother will continue to cut his sammiches and wipe his nose).

I was sorry to see Vogt leave. I think he probably had a role to play at some point in the future at linebacker. It might have just been as a special teamer, but I think he could have contributed.

Miller has been a total bust. He was a highly regarded defensive end out of Vanceboro and considering that he moved from def. end (a power-speed position) to guard (the exact opposite), I think we can safely assume that he didn’t have the athleticism that people thought. He never really gained enough weight to see any meaningful minutes. If he wants to get into some games, it’s probably a pretty good move to drop down a level. You have to punch your weight, afterall.

I’m of two minds on Gavin Smith. On one hand, I have compassion for him. I lost a friend to a car wreck my senior year. And like Smith’s dead buddies, alcohol, extreme speed, Newtonian physics and a telephone pole were factors.

On the other hand, being a college football player requires discipline and a sense of commitment far beyond what expected of the normal 18-year-old.

In the words of FBI Agent Ben Harp, “Special agent Utah! This is not some job, flipping burgers at the local drive-in!”

I have no idea what’s going on in Gavin Smith’s head. I don’t know if he’s recovered from his friend’s death or not. But whether he’s come out of the other side from his grief or not, everyone’s probably better off severing ties and parting ways.

  24. crackdog 07/24/2007 at 10:01 AM #

Noah, were these highly regarded recruits?

  25. noah 07/24/2007 at 10:41 AM #

Ellis was, I believe, a three-star recruit and a top-30 guy in NC. Amato really, really liked him.

I got an email from a friend who says that Ellis is NOT going to prep school and will try an enroll at NCSU. So scratch the FSU comment, I guess.

Linney was supposed to be a big guy who could really run. Whaley was not highly-regarded at all.
