NFL Draft Coming Saturday

The NFL Draft is this weekend and NC State looks to put at least two more Wolfpackers – Tank Tyler and Leroy Harris – in the league. There is a good chance that the NFL season will start next year with at least twenty-five former Wolfpackers on league rosters. Wow!

Dave Glenn has started three days of ACC/NFL Draft coverage with this entry today.

It will be interesting to see if Pat Thomas and TJ Williams can make their squads this year. Both were marginal NFL players who are coming back from injuries.

Williams, I think, reached an injury settlement with the Bucs, so I don’t know if he will even get a camp invitation. He might want to think about trying to move to a FB or H-back position if he gives it another go.

According to Dave Glenn’s article, NC State is 2nd to last, all-time, among the 12 ACC schools in players drafted by the NFL.

    Excuse me, 3rd to last:

Miami has produced 286 draft picks, including 56 first-rounders, in the history of its program. Florida State, which joined the ACC in 1992, has sent 208 players into the draft, including 33 first-rounders.

    Here are the all-time NFL draft numbers for the rest of the league: North Carolina 197 selections (16 in first round), Maryland 192 (15), Georgia Tech 191 (8), Clemson 189 (20), Boston College 181 (14), Duke 149 (6), Virginia 139 (13), N.C. State 135 (15), Wake Forest 115 (2), Virginia Tech 111 (6).

We’re catching up, and that’s what matters.

^ I was shocked that we were 3rd to last, but blown away that VT is dead last.

Is there any question at all that UNC has done the least with the most in ACC football history?

I haven’t looked at that article, but it’s not surprising. NC State and Wake are the two schools in the ACC that have never had a single period of greatness in football. I would imagine that UVa is 10th.

Dook had the 40s and the early 1960s under Wallace Wade, Eddie Cameron and Bill Murray.

Carolina had periods during the 50s through late 70s.

Georgia Tech was a powerhouse under Bobby Ross, Bud Carson, Bobby Dodd, and John Heisman.

Clemson, of course, had Frank Howard and Danny Ford.

    FSU had the Bowden years.

    Miami, of course…

VPI is in the middle of its peak time.

Maryland had its greatness under Jim Tatum and Jerry Claiborne.

UVa had a very brief period under George Welsh.

UVa has never played for a national title, but had a brief period as the #1 team. I can’t remember where UNC ended up, but in 1980, I think they finished in the top 5 the year they went 11-1. Of course, they played in the Bluebonnet Bowl that year. I think they had one top-five finish under Mack Brown, didn’t they?

Maryland, Miami, FSU, GT, and Clemson all have national titles. VPI played for a national title. Dook has its Rose Bowl title.

Even Wake has last season with an ACC title and a BCS bid.

    Trout slipped in.

VPI, historically, is a TERRIBLE football program. I was shocked that anyone would vote them into the ACC simply because their sports program sucks so bad. Outside of Frank Beamer, you know what they bring to the table?

    Squat.

They were so bad that they were very seriously considering dropping down to I-AA back in the early 1990s.

“They were so bad that they were very seriously considering dropping down to I-AA back in the early 1990s.”

I hate to dispute Noah, because I think his historical knowledge is prety darn good, but I dont see how this could be true, as VT joined the Big East football conference in 1991.

1991: Big East Football Conference is formed among the league’s football-playing members and three new football-only members (West Virginia, Temple, Virginia Tech). Miami is named league champion by virtue of winning the national championship.

Wasn’t the infamous Peach Bowl “injury game” w/ VaTech in 87?

What about AJ Davis?? I read in the Charlotte Observer this morning (I know, I know…..but it’s a better option than my local paper) that he is projected as a 3rd round pick.

VT has won 59.9% of their games all time – NCSU is at 50.6% One area that VT lacks is conference titles – they have only 2 , not counting ties.

My information on that came from Gary Hahn. In 1992, we played them in Blacksburg and we had a great team and they were awful. We played the most lackadasical game you ever saw against just a CRAP squad that would go on to finish 2-8-1.

During the game, Hahn and Dornburg were talking about how VPI had been very close to dropping down to I-AA. They didn’t, obviously, and Beamer had them back being competitive a year or two later.

As far as AJ Davis is concerned, he didn’t run very well during the pro day workouts. He’ll get drafted, but he’s probably a second day selection.

Beamer has been gradually building VT’s football program for over 20 years, they were nothing before. Yes we used to play VT when Sheridan was coach. I always felt Sheridan and Beamer were alot alike and were building similar programs. Difference was Beamer stayed because VT committed to continually upgrading their football facilities. We had the UNC Board kill us after the Valvano thing which destroyed the promised improvements and upgrades to Carter Finley etc. Sheridan left and we sat stagnat as a football program for years. Beamer & VT kept building and look at the result. Taken us a long time to get to this point of our football program. VT passed us as a football program because we stopped our committment to football back in the 80’s. It took a combination of a Les Robinson Ad, a football woman from Texas. and a newly hired Amato that clearly demanded upgrades if we were going to have the chance to compete on the football field. For the first time in a long time we truely have the chance to really compete. Seems during the last 10 years we’ve become much more of a football school also. I attribute part of that to the dullness of our basketball program seemed to have fans searching for something to root for and found it in our football program. In all fairness to Amato most of what we have today was being planned or under construction during his tenure. I am excited about the combination of TOB and our facilties.

Noah – Maryland had quite a run under Bobby Ross as well. You left him off.
